Beichuan Old County Town Earthquake Site

Beichuan Old County Town Earthquake Site

4.7
4.4/5
119 reviews
The earthquake site of the old Beichuan County is adjacent to Jiangyou City in the east, Anxian County in the south, Maoxian County in the west, and Songpan and Pingwu counties in the north, covering an area of about 2,867.83 square kilometers. The entire earthquake site museum project consists of the site area and the museum. The "Scheme Design" divides the planning scope of the Beichuan Site Museum into three levels, namely the core area, the control area and the coordination area. It is recommended that both the county seat and Renjiaping should be included in the core area of protection, with the county seat as a whole as the site area and the museum located in Renjiaping. Although Renjiaping is about 2 kilometers away from the county seat, many touching stories also occurred during the entire earthquake relief process due to the overall collapse of the teaching building of Beichuan Middle School. Based on the above reasons, the "Scheme Design" defines the planned core area as the main functional scope of the site museum project, including the earthquake site in the county seat and the Renjiaping area. It is specifically composed of three parts, including the Renjiaping Earthquake Museum and Comprehensive Service Area, Beichuan County Site Protection Area, and Secondary Disaster Display and Natural Recovery Area. The control area is the environmental protection and ecological restoration area, which mainly includes the main secondary disaster occurrence areas around the core area. Through ecological restoration, this area will form the background of the overall environment of the core area. The control area is about 1 km outside the environmental protection and ecological restoration area, and takes into account factors such as the distribution of surrounding residential areas and the division of natural watersheds.Beichuan · 23.8km from downtown

The "5.12" Wenchuan Earthquake Memorial Hall was designed by the Shanghai Tongji University Architectural Design Institute in accordance with the eight-character principle of "natural, simple, ecological, and scientific". The memorial hall covers an area of about 142,300 square meters, with a construction area of about 14,280 square meters and an exhibition area of about 10,748 square meters. The main building is named "Crack", which means "to freeze the moment of disaster like lightning between the earth, leaving eternal memory for future generations". The entire building is shaped in the style of the earth landscape, and the main building volume is formed by cutting and lifting the ground. It extends outward through the sunken square and trails, blending with the gentle grass slope, and partially rising out of the ground, implying new life and hope. In September 2018, the China Museum Association decided to agree that the 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake Memorial Hall is a national third-level museum.Beichuan · 21.5km from downtown

Shengshui Temple

Shengshui Temple is a thousand-year-old temple located on the right bank of the Fu River in Mianyang, at the southern foot of Tazi Mountain. It was founded during the Tang Dynasty and was named after the "Shengshui" (Holy Water), a clear spring behind the temple that never dries up, during the Zhengtong reign of the Ming Dynasty. The original site of the ancient temple is right under the cliff behind the current Guanyin Hall. On the cliff, there is an ancient cliff inscription titled "Shengshui Longqiu Ji" (Record of the Shengshui Dragon Pool). The "Longqiu" (Dragon Pool) spring under the cliff remains full all year round and was considered a sweet spring in the past. Beside it, there is a Qing Dynasty red sandstone statue of the Rain-Walking Dragon King, making the origin of the temple's name clear at a glance. Most of the existing halls were rebuilt starting in the 1980s: the Heavenly King Hall, Guanyin Hall, Great Compassion Hall, Mahavira Hall, and Sutra Library ascend the mountain along the central axis, while the Jade Buddha Hall, Ksitigarbha Hall, and Bell and Drum Towers are arranged on both sides, creating a layered and majestic monastic atmosphere. There are many highlights inside the halls. The Vairocana Guanyin statue in the Guanyin Hall is solemn and exquisite. The four-sided Thousand-Hand Guanyin in the Great Compassion Hall has distinct expressions and gestures. On both sides of the Mahavira Hall stand steles of the "Diamond Sutra." The Burmese jade Buddha in the Jade Buddha Hall was donated by overseas Chinese; it has a warm jade texture and a serene expression. Especially worth stopping for is the "Jixiang Gate" (Auspicious Gate) sculpture art corridor. You can reach it shortly after walking up the steps from the mountain gate. This corridor, which took over ten years to build, stretches for about 200m along the mountain. It uses imagery such as dragons, auspicious clouds, peonies, and fruits to convey auspicious meanings, and uses groups of sculptures to recreate the Eastern Glazed World and the Pure Land. Groups of Arhat statues and nine dragons spitting water are dotted throughout, making it a popular spot for tourists to come specifically for photos. Not far in front of the temple, a railway passes by, and the scene of trains passing by the foot of the mountain is quite unique. The temple is always bustling with incense offerings, and Buddhist ceremonies are often held during Buddhist festivals. The adjacent Luohan Temple is connected to it, so you can visit both at the same time.Mianyang · 27km from Beichuan

Baishui Lake Scenic Attraction was built in 1958. It is located in the north of the western Sichuan plain and the southwest of Anzhou District, Mianyang. The Attraction is 664 meters above sea level, covers an area of about 2.68 square kilometers, and has a water area of more than 3,000 acres. The average water depth is 7 meters, and the depth can reach more than 20 meters. The Attraction is part of the National Geopark of Bioherms. It is based on the ancient conglomerate karst geological landscape and has many types of scenic resources such as mountains, forests, lakes, islands, and reefs. In 1993, it was approved as a provincial scenic spot by the Sichuan Provincial Government; in 2005, it was awarded the National Water Conservancy Scenic Area by the Ministry of Water Resources; in 2017, it was awarded the National Luya Competition Training Base; in June 2022, it was awarded the municipal sports tourism demonstration base. The beautiful Baishui Lake is like a dazzling pearl inlaid on the land of Anzhou. It is famous for its unique natural beauty. Mountains rise from water and water is born in mountains. Many literati and poets can't help but write poems when visiting. Among them, the famous one is that in 1999, the TV series "Journey to the West" produced by the China TV Drama Production Center was filmed here for the three episodes of "Blocked by Lion Camel Ridge", "Meeting the Fairy Peacock Terrace" and "Arhat Receiving Dapeng". The chief director Yang Jie and the famous actor Liu Xiaolingtong left the beautiful sentence "Green island floats on blue waves, gulls and herons are leisurely". Lake Island Landscape Baishui Lake has a beautiful environment and pleasant climate. Surrounded by mountains, the lake is wide and quiet, the water is clear, and the breeze makes the waves sparkle. There are 23 natural islands on the lake, like bright emeralds scattered on the white water jade plate, which cleverly divide and combine thousands of acres of water to form a multi-level three-dimensional scenic Attraction and a deep and winding harbor. Flora and fauna Bird Island, is a gathering island for migratory birds migrating from north to south. The island is rich in vegetation, mild climate, quiet environment, clear water, lush Souvenir plants and abundant fish, which attracts many rare birds such as cormorants, egrets, mandarin ducks, herons, green herons, etc. to live and breed here. It is an ideal habitat for many migratory birds. Near the bird island, you can hear hundreds of birds singing, calling friends and making it very lively; you can see groups of gulls and herons playing and enjoying themselves. In spring and winter, migratory birds travel thousands of kilometers from the far north to Baishui Lake Bird Island, fulfilling their unchanging agreement with this beautiful wetland, forming a natural water migratory bird paradise. Baihuazhou IslandAs its name suggests, the island is a dazzling one among the 23 islands of Baishui Lake. It is named for its rich plant landscape and various flower species. As a small island reef, it is inlaid on the clear blue waves like a gem. The island is full of wild flowers and grasses, and the flowers, plants and trees are scattered in an orderly manner, showing a natural and undecorated beauty. Due to its beautiful natural environment, it has attracted many writers, painters and artists to come here to collect folk songs, sketch, experience life and create works. It is a base and source of inspiration for artists. Lake and spring landscape There are three boiling springs in the center of Baishui Lake. The water flowing out is white, forming a small river, so it is called Baishui River. In the late 1950s, a reservoir was built here. In the early 1980s, tourism was developed, so it was renamed Baishui Lake. 2 kilometers east of Baishui Lake is Jishi Boiling Spring, which has a history of more than 350 million years. The spring surface is more than 20 square meters. Several streams of spring water gush out from the pebbles, splashing and making a sound. It is a low-sodium drinking mineral water approved by the state. Boiling spring wine and mineral water have become famous local specialty products. Cultural attractions Jushui Town, 1 km west of Baishui Lake, is the hometown of Sha Ting, a modern Chinese writer. Sha Ting, formerly known as Yang Chaoxi, is a famous modern writer and revolutionary. During the revolutionary war, he was arranged by the party to go to An County (now Anzhou District) to engage in underground organization activities and was a pioneer of the An County revolution. He lived in Jushui for ten years and created famous literary masterpieces such as "Gold Rush", "The Beast in the Traps" and "Return to Hometown", which had a significant impact on the New Democratic Revolution and contemporary literature. Since the Taiping Bridge in Jushui Town was built in the fourth year of the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty (1799 AD), the annual "Spring Festival" bridge-walking activity has been enduring and has been passed down to this day. Every year on the fifth day of the fifth month after the beginning of spring, Taiping Bridge gathers more than 200,000 tourists. They pray for good weather and avoid disasters; young parents worship godmothers and godfathers for their children to protect their children's healthy growth. Folk activities such as "crossing the bridge", "babies worshiping lions", "throwing medicine money", and "pulling godfathers" are rich and colorful. The bridge-walking event is an important festival for people to travel together in spring and watch folk performances in northwest Sichuan. Strange reef landscape The sponge reef in Jushui Town, Anzhou District, is a deep-water siliceous hexaradiate sponge reef of unique scale and type in the world. It is a deep-water bioreef formed by siliceous hexaradiate sponges more than 220 million years ago, which is more than 70 million years earlier than the Jurassic siliceous sponge bioreefs in Germany, Switzerland and France. The reef body of the sponge reef in Anzhou District is 40 to 60 meters high, and the largest one can reach 80 centimeters in diameter. Research has shown that the siliceous hexaradiate sponges in the Anzhou District are the ancestors of European siliceous sponges. The discovery of sponge reefs in the Anzhou District has filled the gap in the geological evolution of sponges, and also solved the mystery of the changes in the ancient Mediterranean and the origin of European Jurassic sponges.Mianyang · 22.4km from Beichuan

WenShuFang is an antique-style cultural block in Qingyang District, Chengdu, adjacent to Wenshu Monastery. Opened in 2006, the Wenshu Monastery area, where it is located, is one of Chengdu's three major historical and cultural conservation zones, alongside Kuanzhai Alley and Daci Temple. The block primarily features architecture in the traditional Sichuanese residential style, with teahouses, snack shops, intangible cultural heritage workshops, and Hanfu stores nestled among gray-tiled roofs, wooden doors, and courtyards. It is also a popular spot for locals to drink tea and chat. The main streets in the district each have their own distinctive features: Wuyuegong Street is dedicated to intangible cultural heritage, with workshops showcasing traditional crafts like Shu brocade, Shu embroidery, lacquerware, bamboo weaving, and silver filigree, where artisans can often be seen working on-site; Nanyue Lane is a hub for Hanfu culture, with a constant stream of people dressed in Hanfu taking photos against the backdrop of ancient-style gate towers and red walls, and the street also offers Hanfu rental and makeup services; Jinma Lane is the heart of old Chengdu flavors, where time-honored snacks like imperial walnut cakes and Zhang Liangfen from Dongzikou can be enjoyed from one end of the street to the other. When you need a break, you can stop at a teahouse for a bowl of covered-bowl tea. The district also hosts Sichuan opera performances, where you can enjoy face-changing, fire-spitting, and long-spout tea art while sipping tea, fully immersing yourself in Chengdu's unique blend of leisure and liveliness. When touring, you might as well combine this place with the nearby Wenshu Monastery into one route, visiting the ancient temple first and then exploring the alleys, which can be completed in half a day. Travelers planning to take Hanfu photos are advised to allocate more time for makeup, styling, and framing.China · Chengdu

5.0
As a witness to the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, the Beichuan Earthquake Site has profound historical, cultural and warning significance. The following is an analysis of its value and characteristics from multiple dimensions: ### 1. **The Solidification of History and Memory** The site completely preserves the natural destructive power of the earthquake: collapsed buildings, broken roads, and houses buried by the mountain, which freeze the tragedy of the disaster in the most intuitive way. The iconic scenes such as the tilted teaching building of the old Beichuan Middle School and the "cemetery", the collective resting place of the victims, are not only a spiritual space for mourning the deceased, but also a vivid teaching material for future generations to understand this national disaster. ### 2. **The Real Classroom of Disaster Education** The site systematically restores the cause of the earthquake, the rescue process and the post-disaster reconstruction process through original display, graphic explanation and digital technology. Visitors can not only feel the irresistible power of nature, but also see the brilliance of humanity from the collective actions of earthquake relief. For example, exhibits such as the wreckage of the rescue helicopter and the notes of volunteers convey the concept of life first and social cohesion in the disaster. ### 3. **Dual enlightenment of science and humanity** Geological disaster warning points are set up around the site, which directly display geological phenomena such as landslides and surface faults, and become a natural laboratory for popularizing geology. At the same time, the comparison between the new Beichuan County and the old site (about 23 kilometers apart) highlights the planning concept of "respecting nature and putting people first" in post-disaster reconstruction - the new city is located away from the fault zone, and the earthquake resistance of the building is comprehensively improved, reflecting the experience and wisdom gained by mankind from the disaster. ### 4. **Emotional resonance and collective healing** For survivors and the families of the victims, the site is a spiritual home for grief; for the public, it is a collective meditation on life and death. The memorial activities on May 12 every year, through flowers, silence, poetry recitation and other forms, sublimate individual pain into national memory and promote the gradual healing of social trauma. ### 5. **Controversy and reflection** The "disaster tourism" attribute of the site has also triggered ethical discussions: how to balance respect for the deceased and educating the public? Beichuan's handling method is worth learning from - the tour route is designed to be solemn and dignified, the areas where no noise and photography are prohibited are clear, and the explanations focus on scientific facts rather than exaggerating sadness, reflecting the protection of the dignity of life. ### Conclusion The Beichuan Earthquake Site has transcended the simple geographical space and has become a spiritual landmark that engraves the memory of the nation. It warns mankind to respect nature and also witnesses the resilient rebirth of civilization in disasters. Its value lies not only in "remembering the past", but also in learning from history, promoting the improvement of the disaster prevention system and the deepening of life education. As the slogan engraved at the entrance of the site says: "No difficulty can stop the heroic Chinese people", this is both a monument to grief and a place of rebirth of hope. **Supplementary Tips**: If you plan to visit, it is recommended to understand the reservation policy of the memorial in advance, wear plain clothes to show respect, and pay attention to the road conditions in the mountainous area during the rainy season. You can combine the nearby "5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake Memorial Hall" and the new Beichuan County to fully experience the time and space context before, during and after the disaster

It has three floors and is quite large; you could easily spend over two hours exploring it. It's suitable for primary and secondary school students, with many interactive experiences. It's free, which is great value. It includes knowledge of physics and chemistry, but it's too advanced for very young children. The 20 RMB space capsule at the entrance is a bit of a rip-off.

Wenshu Fang, nestled against the ancient Wenshu Monastery, exudes the rustic charm of western Sichuan folk customs amidst its blue bricks and gray tiles. I strolled leisurely here with my dog, wandering through bamboo paths and red-walled, green corridors; even he couldn't resist frolicking on the stone slabs. There's none of the hustle and bustle of trendy shops, only the jasmine fragrance wafting from teahouses and the gentle sounds of artisans hammering bamboo – the atmosphere is simply divine! Wenshu Fang is a hidden gem of a Chengdu food map! Just step outside and you can enjoy authentic "Dongzikou Zhang Lao Er" sweet water noodles, their sour, spicy, and savory flavors instantly awakening your taste buds. I squatted by the window and ordered a spicy hot pot for my dog, and he quietly devoured half the bowl! There's also freshly ground soy milk and ice jelly on the street corner; even my dog couldn't resist licking the soy pulp clean from the rim of the bowl! Wenshu Fang is incredibly pet-friendly! I took photos with my dog in front of the "Wenshu Fang" cultural and creative shop; he posed on the bluestone slabs against the backdrop of the ancient buildings with their upturned eaves – every snapshot looked like a masterpiece of traditional Chinese style. The shop also thoughtfully provided a water station for pets, so you don't have to worry about your pet getting thirsty.

When we arrived at the Qiang Folk Museum, the tour guide sister was enthusiastic and thoughtful, and gave us a free tour. I like Beichuan Qiang Folk Museum. We learned a lot about the culture of the Qiang people here. I will come again next time
