Autumn at Lake Sevan: No Swimming, But a Must-Visit
In the summer, Lake Sevan is loud, crowded, and hot. In autumn, it is quiet, windy, and incredibly beautiful. If you have already seen the "Armenian Sea" at the height of the season, trust me: this is a completely different story. Swimming is no longer an option, but it is precisely in October that the lake becomes that iconic postcard view—deep blue water, orange and golden mountains all around, and the feeling that you are the only tourist there.
What happens at the lake in autumn
In October, Sevan is significantly cooler than Yerevan. During the day, temperatures hover around +14…+18°C, dropping to +5…+9°C at night. It is almost always windy near the water, so a warm jacket and a hat will come in handy even on a sunny day. The swimming season is closed—the water cools down fast, and even the locals have stopped going in.
Then there are the colors. The peak of the autumn foliage falls between late September and late October. During this time, Sevanavank on the peninsula is especially photogenic: the dark stone of the monastery contrasts with the orange trees and turquoise water, and the first snow caps are already visible on the mountain peaks on the horizon. If you visit in early November, the leaves are still hanging on but starting to fall, creating a more restrained, almost graphic landscape.
What to do instead of the beach
The main route remains the same: climb up to Sevanavank, walk around the peninsula, and relax at the viewpoints. It is a simple 10–15 minute walk from the parking lot to the monastery. In autumn, the air is clearer, and the view of the lake from above is sharper than in the summer haze—the mountains on the opposite shore are visible as if in the palm of your hand.
Boat trips are still possible on clear days, but without swimming: just to ride, see the shore from the water, and return. In the evening, it is silent here, the stars are perfectly visible, and the air is such that you will want to be asleep by ten.
What to eat
Kchuch and whitefish are not going anywhere—in fact, they are even better in autumn. Hot trout from a clay pot with potatoes and onions warms you up after a walk in the wind, and grilled whitefish is the other classic. If you are up for an experiment, order the crayfish tail kebab: it sounds unusual, but it tastes surprisingly good.
Lakeside restaurants are open, though some summer verandas may be closed—it is best to count on the indoor dining rooms.
Practical details
Dress in layers: it can be warm during the day, but it cools down sharply by evening. The wind at the lake is constant, so a windbreaker or a light jacket is essential. The sun at an altitude of 1,900 meters is still active—sunscreen is a must. Also, bring cash: cards are not accepted everywhere, especially in smaller cafes.
Autumn at Lake Sevan is not about "lounging by the water," but about walks, views, and the feeling that the lake belongs to you alone. In summer, it is loud and crowded, but in October, it is quiet, windy, and very beautiful.
Other visitors' reviews of Lake Sevan
Show More ReviewsIt is about 70 kilometers from Yerevan by car. It is a free attraction. There is also a monastery. We took a cruise ship, which cost 10,000 drams for 3 people, about 60 yuan per person. There were not many people when we went there that day, which was equivalent to chartering a boat. Climb to the top of the mountain to find the monastery.
