Bom Jesus do Monte

The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte is located on Mount Espinó, on the outskirts of Braga in northern Portugal. It is a historic Roman Catholic pilgrimage site. Its most famous feature is the magnificent zigzag Baroque steps, which climb 116 meters. Along the way, there are many chapels, fountains and sculptures depicting the scenes of the Passion of Jesus. The sanctuary was built in the 14th century, and the existing buildings were mainly built from the 18th to the early 19th century, combining Baroque and neoclassical styles. Among them, the famous "Five Senses Steps" symbolize vision, hearing, smell, taste and touch through fountains, reflecting the combination of religion and art. To facilitate tourists to climb to the top, one of the earliest cable cars in the Iberian Peninsula was built in 1882 and is still in operation. In 2019, the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and became an important cultural landmark in Braga.

Palace of the Dukes of Braganza

The palace was first constructed in the 15th century, led by the first Duke of Braganza, Afonso. The palace later fell into disrepair, and in the 20th century, it underwent extensive restoration, with some areas being used as the official residence of the President of the Portuguese Republic in the northern region.
