5.7k reviews
Wanfenglin Scenic Area is located in the southwest of Xingyi City, Guizhou Province, in the hinterland of Southwest Guizhou on the southeastern edge of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, between 104 51' and 104 58' east longitude and 24 58' and 25 42' north latitude. The southern end borders Guangxi, the west reaches Sanjiangkou at the junction of Yunnan, Guangxi and Guizhou, and the north is connected to the main peak of Wumeng Mountain. The peak is 1,600 meters above sea level, with an average altitude of 1,200 meters. The forest coverage rate is 68.5%, and the total area is more than 2,000 square kilometers. It is a typical area for the development of conical karst peak forest landforms in the world. Wanfenglin has a pleasant climate, with an average annual temperature of 16-18 , no severe cold in winter and no scorching heat in summer. The average temperature in July is 21-26 . It is listed in the national summer resort city rankings and is an excellent leisure and tourism place in China.Wanfenglin Scenic Area is dominated by conical peak forests and peak clusters with Triassic strata rocks, among which are various geological relic landscapes such as karst caves, funnels, underground rivers, sinkholes and sedimentary strata. The peak clusters and peak forests are widely distributed, diverse in types, rich in form and well developed, which are extremely rare in China and even in the world. They are typical representatives of the conical karst landforms formed in the transition slope zone from the western Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau to the Guangxi hills, and are the "China Conical Karst Large Museum".The scenic resource types of the scenic area are mainly natural landscapes such as pastoral scenery and strange peaks and mountains, supplemented by cultural landscapes such as ethnic minority villages. In terms of natural resources, according to the form of the peak forest, Wanfenglin is divided into karst isolated peaks, valley peak forests, karst cone peaks, blade-shaped stone peaks and other types, forming a magnificent and vast karst landscape, which is a typical representative of the cone-shaped karst landform landscape and has great geological research value; in terms of cultural resources, the long history of the Buyi people has accumulated a rich national culture. Whether it is their clothing, language, or living customs, they all contain a strong national cultural atmosphere. The "Eight Sounds Sitting Singing" which enjoys the reputation of "living fossil of sound" and "sound of nature" is the folk rap art passed down from generation to generation by the Buyi people. It has a history of more than a thousand years and has been rated as a "national intangible cultural heritage."China · Xingyi

Erhai Lake

8.1
4.6/5
8.2k reviews
Erhai Lake lies quietly at the foot of the Cangshan Mountains and east of Dali Ancient Town, serving as Yunnan's second-largest plateau freshwater lake after Dianchi Lake. Stretching narrowly over 40 km from north to south, its silhouette resembles both a human ear and a crescent moon. The Bai people traditionally call large lakes "seas," and with its vast expanse and sea-like waves when winds rise, it earned this romantic name. The nineteen peaks of Cangshan stand like a screen to the west, reflecting the lake's shimmering waters—a scenery long praised as "silver Cangshan and jade Erhai." This is also the setting for the "Erhai moon," one of Dali's famed "wind, flower, snow, and moon" four scenic wonders. The classic way to explore Erhai Lake is riding or hiking along the lakeside ecological corridor, where you can stop anytime along the 100 km shoreline: Longkan Dock on the western shore features boardwalks extending into the water and rows of dawn redwoods, making it a popular sunrise spot. Further north, Panxi S-bend's waterfront trail curves gracefully along the lake, with a solitary tree in the water and pastoral shores serving as iconic photo backdrops. Taking a cruise offers distant views of Little Putuo Island and a chance to visit Nanzhao Folk Island, often accompanied by Bai ethnic tea ceremonies and dances. Jinsuo Island in the southern lake has been home to Bai fishermen for generations, preserving both village charm and Benzhu faith traditions. During the summer Torch Festival, lakeside villagers toss pine resin powder, creating fiery sparks, while the legend-linked Shuahai Festival—honoring Lady Bojie and Duan Chicheng's serpent-slaying tale—keeps Bai bravery alive by the lakeshore. To slow down, head to Shuanglang Ancient Town by the lake and pick a waterfront café to spend half a day. At dawn, wait for the sunrise on the western shore; in the evening, watch the sunset paint the Cangshan Mountains golden-red from the eastern shore—riding along the lakeshore, cruising back to gaze at the mountains from the lake center, or simply sitting by the water—these experiences perfectly piece together different facets of Erhai Lake.China · Dali City

From a distance, it looks like a giant Buddha sitting peacefully. Jinping Mountain has a thousand-year-old temple Maitreya Temple, where the main Buddha is Maitreya, so the city name, temple name, and Buddha name are the same. Maitreya Temple was built during the Tianqi period of the Ming Dynasty, rebuilt during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, and expanded and completed in 1999. Olives Dam is located in the lower reaches of the Lancang River and is known as "Menghan" in the Dai language. It is a well-preserved cluster of Dai ethnic villages. The area is rich in tropical produce, with coconuts, betel nuts, bananas, mangoes, and jackfruit visible everywhere, and bamboo houses shaded by lush greenery. Multiple natural Dai villages are scattered throughout the area, where villagers mostly live in traditional stilt-style bamboo houses surrounded by bamboo fences and banana trees, creating a pastoral scene typical of the south. The traditional temple architecture in the villages is magnificent, with the spires of the pagodas standing out strikingly under the tropical sun, making it a great place to learn about local ethnic culture. The villages are close to each other and can be visited on foot. Along the way, you can experience traditional Dai handicrafts and taste authentic Dai cuisine, which is primarily sour and spicy. The Dai people have a tradition of blessing others through water splashing, and water-splashing activities are a representative cultural experience in the area, as well as a distinctive, long-standing folk custom to enjoy during your visit.China · Jinghong

Yunnan Provincial Museum

The Yunnan Provincial Museum is a comprehensive museum showcasing Yunnan's history and ethnic culture, housing over 200,000 cultural relics (sets), with strengths in ancient Dian Kingdom bronzeware, Nanzhao and Dali Kingdom Buddhist statues, and historical calligraphy and paintings. The building itself is distinctive: its reddish-brown exterior is composed of irregular stone prism shapes, resembling a stone forest rising from the ground, making it memorable even before entering the exhibition halls. The permanent exhibition follows a chronological sequence, with six themed halls—"Ancient Yunnan," "Dawn of civilization," "Dominance in southern China," "Land of fragrant Buddhism," "Frontier expansion and defense," and "A century of upheaval"—taking visitors from prehistoric times to the modern era, offering a condensed overview of Yunnan's history. Located in a multi-ethnic border region, the artifacts here differ markedly from those in inland museums: bronzeware depicts vivid scenes of animal combat, rituals, and warfare, while the Dian Kingdom's unique shell containers resemble lidded bronze "piggy banks." The Buddhist statues bear the distinct regional style of the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms, warranting closer attention. The museum's crown jewels deserve dedicated viewing time: the Warring States period bronze ox-tiger table, unearthed from the Lijiashan tombs in Jiangchuan, features a small ox hidden beneath a large ox and a fierce tiger biting the ox's tail, earning the saying "In the north, there's the galloping horse treading on a flying swallow; in the south, there's the ox-tiger bronze table." The Dali Kingdom gilded Avalokitesvara statue with silver halo from the Qianxun Pagoda of Chongsheng Temple in Dali has a unique golden form. Other treasures include Song Dynasty Guo Xi's "Travelers among mountains and streams," Yuan Dynasty Huang Gongwang's "Visiting Dai in Shanxi," and the Ming Dynasty gem-inlaid golden crown. After the visit, you can stop by the nearby Guandu ancient town, making it possible to explore both sites in a day.Kunming · 93.7km from Eshan

ZHUJIA HUAYUAN is located on Hanlin Street in Jianshui County. It was a home and ancestral temple built by the Zhu Weiqing brothers in the waning years of the Qing Dynasty. Within the park, the ancestral hall, temple, living quarters and gardens are all magnificent and majestic. Visitors to the site can take the opportunity to learn about the architectural style of the southwestern residential gardens. The entirety of the Zhu Family Garden is built on a south-to-north axis and, for Jianshui, is a typical and classical combination of residential buildings and gardens. The buildings are, of course, laid out in a specific order. In the southeast corner of the Zhu Family Garden stands a Huaiyuan Hall with an exhibition on the Century-Long Rise and Fall of the Zhu Family.Jianshui · 74.9km from Eshan

Fuxian Lake

4.6/5
166 reviews
Fuxian Lake is located between Chengjiang, Jiangchuan District, and Huaning County in Yuxi, Yunnan. As most of the lake lies within Chengjiang, locals also call it "Chengjiang Sea." Accessible by a roughly one-hour drive from Kunming, it is a popular lakeside getaway in central Yunnan. Covering over 200 square km, it ranks as Yunnan's third-largest lake by area after Dianchi and Erhai, but its fame stems from its depth and water volume: with depths exceeding 150 m and a storage capacity of approx. 20 billion cubic meters, it dwarfs Dianchi and Erhai combined. The lake's crystal-clear azure waters boast transparency of up to 7–8 m, inspiring ancient descriptions like "10,000 acres of glazed glass." Highlights cluster along the western and northern shores. On the west, the Luchong scenic area nestles between mountains and the lake. A short climb up Bijia Hill rewards visitors with panoramic views, while ancient banyan trees shade its base. Here, traditional waterwheel fishing persists—locals channel lake water into ditches to catch the endemic kanglang fish. Further south, Mingxing Fish Cave's shallow, clear waters make it a hotspot for sailing boats and kayaking. The northern and eastern shores offer more photogenic scenes: coconut-fringed beaches at Moon Bay Wetland Park, red sand beaches on the Chengjiang side, the cherry blossom-lined Time Trail at Yinghua Valley, and flower fields at Fuhai Bay Wetland Park are all popular photo spots. At the lake's southwestern tip, Yudai River connects to neighboring Xingyun Lake, where the Jieyu Stone creates the curious phenomenon of "two lakes meeting, fish never crossing"—fish from each lake turn back at the stone. Divers have discovered mysterious stone structures on the lakebed, adding to its allure. The nearly 100-km ring road around the lake is ideal for self-drive or cycling tours, with mountain and lake views at every turn. Frequent stops for photos are encouraged, though holiday traffic can be heavy, so allow ample time. Lakeside restaurants serve must-try dishes like copper-pot fish and potato rice, with the tender, small-boned kanglang fish being a local delicacy. In winter, red-billed gulls overwinter here, and the soft morning and evening light creates perfect conditions for sunrise and sunset photography. For natural history enthusiasts, the nearby Maotianshan area on the north shore has yielded abundant Cambrian fossils dating back over 500 million years, worth a detour.Chengjiang · 62.3km from Eshan

Maling River is located in Xingyi City, a strategic point for Yunnan, Guangxi and Guizhou. It is 334 kilometers northeast of Guiyang and 321 kilometers west of Kunming. It originates from Baiguoling in the Wumeng Mountains. The upper reaches are called Qingshui River, and the middle reaches are called Maling River because of Mabie Dazhai and Malingzhai on both sides. Maling River has a slightly sad title - "the beautiful scar on the earth", which vividly describes the magnificence and steepness of Maling River. Maling River is more than 70 kilometers long, cutting a narrow and deep ground canyon in the plain. This structure is extremely rare in the world and is known as "the first seam in the world". The majestic and beautiful Maliang River Canyon National Scenic Spot is known as the "River of Thousands of Waterfalls" and "The Crack in the Sky and Earth". In 1993, the Maliang River "Five Rings Rafting Company" was established, pioneering rafting in the southwest. In April 1998, the International Canoe Rafting Competition was successfully held, and it became the Guizhou Province Canoeing Training Base and the National Olympic Whitewater Sports Base.China · Xingyi

I visited Wanfenglin in mid-to-late October, and it wasn't as beautiful as I expected. There were no rapeseed flowers, and the rice paddies had already been harvested. The scenic area isn't very large; you mainly travel by sightseeing bus. You really need to come at the right time to see the beautiful scenery you imagine.

On my second trip to Dali, I stayed for three days. On the first day, I stayed at Erhai Park, facing north to enjoy the view of Erhai Lake. On the second day, I stayed at Shuanglang Ancient Town, facing west to see the Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake together. On the third day, I cycled from west to east along the Erhai Ecological Corridor to enjoy the view of Erhai Lake. I also went to Yunxiang Mountain Road for extreme mountain biking, Shuanglang, Xizhou Ancient Town, Dali Ancient City, etc. Every angle offered a different perspective of Erhai Lake. The scenery in Dali is truly beautiful.

It's a worthwhile scenic spot to visit. Climbing the stairs up might be a bit tiring, so we took an electric cart. There was a guide on the cart explaining how to pay homage to Buddha, which was quite nice. The scenery on the mountain is also beautiful, and the air is very fresh. If you come a little later in the day, it won't be so sunny, making it quite suitable for hiking. The weather in Mile is really changeable; it was sunny when we went up, but cloudy when we came down. Shortly after we got on the cart, a strong wind and heavy rain started, so we were quite lucky.

My visit to the Yunnan Provincial Museum was made incredibly fortunate by the professional and gentle guidance of Ms. Cui. The entire experience was excellent, and I gained a great deal. I wholeheartedly recommend her! Ms. Cui possesses a solid and profound knowledge base. Her explanations are logically clear and progressively structured, avoiding dry and tedious rote memorization. Instead, she seamlessly connects Yunnan's ancient Dian civilization, the Nanzhao and Dali kingdoms, and its modern ethnic history, weaving scattered artifacts into a vibrant tapestry of millennia-old cultural heritage. Regarding the museum's prized artifacts, such as the Bronze Ox and Tiger Case, the Four-Ox Gilded Knight Shell Container, and the Garuda, Ms. Cui meticulously dissected the artifacts' shapes, craftsmanship details, and historical significance, supplementing the content with numerous interesting anecdotes and cultural backgrounds beyond the textbook. The originally static and impersonal artifacts became warm and engaging under her vivid narration, allowing us to truly understand the unique charm of the ancient Dian culture and the brilliant heritage of Southwest China's civilization. Ms. Cui's pacing was perfect, maintaining an appropriate pace and making the explanations easy to understand, catering to the comprehension levels of different visitors. Throughout the visit, she was patient and gentle, proactively answering questions with a kind and responsible attitude. Her passion and sincerity for cultural heritage work were palpable. What was initially a cursory tour became incredibly meaningful thanks to Ms. Cui's professional explanations. We not only gained a deeper understanding of Yunnan's millennia-long history but also immersed ourselves in the unique cultural heritage of the region. An excellent guided tour is the key to unlocking history. Many thanks to Ms. Cui!

Although Jianshui Ancient City is a relatively niche tourist destination in Yunnan, this visit provided me with a unique experience! The city is clean and tidy, the tourism management is quite standardized, and the ancient city ruins are well preserved. The Zhu Family Garden, in particular, deeply impressed me with its rich local culture; it's likely a microcosm of the ancient city's heyday and definitely worth a visit. Allow ample time to savor and appreciate its beauty!

Although it's a refreshing scenic area, within a small area, there are deep canyons, steep cliffs, and waterfalls like Huanglong and Zhenzhu cascading down like silver ribbons falling from the sky. The mist splashes, and the water's impact cuts straight to the earth's core. The calcifications on the rock walls resemble the growth of Ganoderma lucidum. It's no exaggeration to say that this is one of the most beautiful scars on Earth. I suggest upgrading it to a 5A-level scenic area and highly recommend visiting it.

Animal interactions within the park are charged separately, and it depends on the individual… some are a bit pricey, others are okay. But it's still fun, kids have a great time, and you'd need at least 4 hours to experience everything at a leisurely pace. The sightseeing bus system is well-designed.
