Mount Qingcheng

Mount Qingcheng has long been praised as "Tranquil Paradise under Heaven," with its peaks encircling like city walls—hence the name. Legend says Zhang Daoling of the Eastern Han dynasty established Taoism here in a thatched hut, making it the ancestral home of Celestial Master Taoism, where temple incense still burns today. The mountain divides into front and back sections: the front features Taoist temples and cultural relics, commonly referred to as "Mount Qingcheng" by most travelers; the back excels in natural landscapes like pools, waterfalls, streams, and gorges, making it ideal for hiking and summer retreats. The highlights of Qianshan are concentrated. Starting from Jianfu Palace beside the mountain gate, follow the ancient stone steps upward past Natural Picture, Tianshi Cave, Chaoyang Cave, and Shangqing Palace, with the summit's Laojun Pavilion as the final vantage point. Tianshi Cave, also called Changdao Temple, is one of the mountain's largest Taoist complexes—its front courtyard holds a millennium-old ginkgo tree allegedly planted by Zhang Daoling, while the cliffside Ink-throwing Trough behind is said to be where the celestial master drew mountains with vermilion ink. Painting master Zhang Daqian once resided at Shangqing Palace, styling himself "Guest of Qingcheng." At the mountain's base, Yuecheng Lake's mirror-like waters add ethereal beauty to the lush greenery. The rear mountain entrance is the quaint Tai'an ancient town. From here, the trails connect Wulong gully and Feiquan gully into a loop, with views like Misty spring triple pools, Double spring water curtain cave, and Hundred-zhang long bridge accompanied by the sounds of water and shaded woods. The Longyin gorge walkway built along cliffs overlooks rushing streams below, making it a dedicated hiking route. The mountain stays pleasantly cool even in midsummer. The front mountain and back mountain entrances are not connected, usually requiring separate itineraries. Most 1-day tours choose one of the two. The front mountain's main temples can be visited in half a day, while the back mountain loop is longer and requires reserving most of a day. Travelers wishing to see the sunrise often ascend the mountain a day early, staying overnight at mountain temples for convenient morning viewing.Dujiangyan · 12.3km from downtown

South Bridge is a replica covered bridge spanning the inner river of theMinjiang River. One end connects to the streets of the Ancient Town of Guan County, while the other is adjacent to the entrance of the Dujiangyan Scenic Area, making it easy to cross when traveling between the two. It was first built during the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty and was originally named "Puji Bridge." It was commissioned by the then-magistrate of Guan County using funds saved from the major renovation ofDujiangyan. After being repeatedly damaged by floods and wars, it was rebuilt in 1959 and named "South Bridge." The 1979 renovation established its current layout, turning the old saying about old Guan County—"there is no road out of the South Gate"—into history. The bridge features a pailou-style, triple-eaved gate design, with ridge ornaments, mythical beasts, and figures sculpted on the barrel-tiled roof. The wood carvings, dragon heads, and hanging eaves at the bridgeheads are all gilded and painted, and the ceiling inside the corridor is covered with colorful paintings. The entire bridge is intricately carved and painted, earning it the reputation of a "painted pavilion on the water" and a "viewing platform." Leaning against the railing, you can watch the inner river water rushing out fromBaopingkou, with the roar of the water and the river breeze blowing in your face. After nightfall, South Bridge takes on a new look: the lights turn on, and the river surface shimmers with flowing, deep blue light, known as "blue tears." This contrasts beautifully with the silhouette of the covered bridge and is a popular sight in the city at night.Dujiangyan · 3.1km from downtown

This water conservancy project, a masterpiece by Li Bing and his son, was built 2200 years ago and has earned Chengdu its reputation as the "Land of Abundance." The water is divided into four parts at the Fish Mouth (4:6 ratio) and two parts at the Flying Sand Weir (2:8 ratio), before flowing out at the Bottle Neck. The wisdom of a thousand years ago is still relevant today.

The cable car to and from the front of Qingcheng Mountain greatly shortens the journey, which is indeed much more convenient for us who want to see both Qingcheng Mountain and Dujiangyan in one day. However, it still requires some climbing. We finally arrived at Shangqing Palace.

To be honest, I was expecting to see more pandas. Also the red panda section is very poor. I only got to see one. Might partialy be my fault because I didn’t go early in the morning. However, the place is very beautiful and the animals are very well treated. I enjoyed my visit.

Qingcheng Mountain's back mountain is truly a summer paradise! The streams murmur along the way, the waterfalls in Wulonggou are magnificent, and Cuiying Lake is emerald green. When you get tired, you can rest in the pavilions, enjoying the cool breeze. The stone steps are well-maintained, the signs are clear, and the restrooms are clean. I recommend starting from Tai'an Ancient Town, taking the Baiyun Cableway to the summit, and then hiking down – this saves energy and allows you to see all the highlights. Don't miss the cured pork and fermented rice noodles at the foot of the mountain. It gets a bit crowded on weekends, so I suggest starting early. Overall, a fantastic experience, perfect for a family trip!

It truly lives up to its reputation as one of Chengdu's must-see spots; those who haven't been should definitely check it out. During the day, you can stroll around the scenic area, and in the evening, enjoy snacks near the South Bridge. The variety of trinkets and delicious food is dazzling. I recommend visiting the South Bridge at night; the lights create a stunning visual effect, the water flows rapidly below, and the overall atmosphere is magnificent. The antique architecture adds a unique touch, evoking a sense of history. The bioluminescent plankton truly lives up to its name.

I stayed at the Cloud Smart Hotel for three days, and it truly felt like being enveloped in gentle comfort. The smart design throughout the room was innovative and practical, the room was elegantly and cleanly furnished, and the bedding was so soft it felt like sinking into a cloud. The staff were friendly and attentive in every way. All the fatigue from my journey was completely healed here, and I'll definitely choose this hotel again for my next trip. [rose emoji]

Very nice ancient town to visit after visiting the Dujiangyan. There is a dining restaurant named 月光宝瓶 beside the river which offers a great view of the river. There are lots of local shops that sell the local products which is great for those that want to buy some souvenirs or local bakery pastry to bring home. We exited to 南桥 (South Bridge) to catch the high speed train to go back to our hotel, so didn't manage to catch a view of the 蓝眼泪 night lighting of the river.
