The eight of us, who had planned a backpacking trip, only had one day to spare in Dali. We planned to take a train from Kunming the night before, do a day tour, and then return to Lijiang the next morning. We initially considered taking a taxi or bus, but decided that a private charter tour, while a bit more expensive, would be more cost-effective. The charter driver was attentive, using his smartphone to translate and always parking close to our destination. Thanks to him, we had a comfortable one-day tour. About 100 meters from the entrance to Heungnang Ancient Town, across from a public restroom, there was a coffee shop with a nice atmosphere and very affordable price. They grinded coffee beans on the spot and made Americano for 5 yuan. Maxim Coffee was 5 yuan elsewhere. Shuanglang Ancient Town wasn't that great. The S-shaped riverside road was a great photo opportunity. Chongqing Temple with its three pagodas was also nice.

Thanks to Yunnan Tourism for their thoughtful arrangements, and to Mr. Yang Chunjie for his attentive assistance and introductions throughout the trip, making my journey wonderful. Mr. Yang knew I preferred less crowded spots at attractions, so he specially found those locations for me to enjoy the sights properly. The travel company and Mr. Yang are absolutely trustworthy travel partners. (Special note: I also had a day trip to the Stone Forest and Jiuxiang from Kunming with this company, and it was a very satisfactory arrangement!)

Our driver, Ms. Ma, was a very steady driver and introduced us to many local specialties. We asked to leave early in the morning, and Ms. Ma picked us up very early. We had a great time watching and feeding the seagulls at Dianchi Lake. On the way back, she even took us to Kunming Old Street. A relaxing and enjoyable trip!

1. Agent was super efficient and helpful. Booked transport + tickets through them—cheaper than DIY. 2. Big, comfortable car for 6 adults. 3. Travel is long (3+ hours). Left 7:30 AM, arrived ~10:45 AM. Pickup back at 4:30–5 PM felt a bit rushed—didn’t reach mountain top. 4. Please bring an oxygen tank per pax if you plan to hike the stairs—1 tank lasts 8–10 pumps. 5. No proper restaurants at the top, just small stalls selling snacks, drinks, KFC, etc. 6. After cable car, need a 10-min uphill walk to reach shuttle bus. 7. Driver drove quite fast on the way back—felt a bit risky coming down the mountain. Safety first! Overall, good experience but schedule could be more relaxed.
