2024 Sousse Medina Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in December)
Popular Attractions
Ribat of Sousse
So far, the most recommended visa-free niche country with an average cost of CNY 1,500 per person.
It's not that I can't afford Greece, but 🇹🇳 is more cost-effective.
Tunisia, an unexpected surprise on this trip, is more romantic than I imagined and more surprising than I expected.
During the five days in 🇹🇳, I had a very pleasant time every day. Here is my travel guide, with an average cost of CNY 1,500 per person!
✍️About visa:
Visa-free, I flew directly from Morocco.
The customs will check your return ticket and hotel reservation when you enter the country, so prepare in advance.
📍About itinerary:
Tunis City Center · Tunisia
1️⃣Sidi Bou Said
2️⃣Medina of Tunis (Old Town)
3️⃣Carthage Ruins
(There are several attractions together, you can walk to check in, or you can choose to charter a car)
Sousse Port
1️⃣El Jem - one of the three largest coliseums in the world, and also the filming location of Mayday's "Born to Love"
2️⃣Medina of Sousse - recommended to stay here
3️⃣Sousse Port
4️⃣Sousse Museum
🚄About transportation:
There are buses in Tunis City to various attractions, which is quite convenient.
Taxis are also not expensive, about 8-10 dinars for 5 km💰
To other cities, you can choose train, bus, or mini bus.
I took a mini bus to Sousse, which took about 1.5h-2h, and took a train back.
☎️About SIM card and currency exchange:
You can get a free SIM card at the airport with your passport at Orange, and recharge 20 dinars for 10g, which is definitely enough if you don't watch dramas~
Some people say that it is best to keep the receipt for currency exchange, so that you can exchange for other currencies when you leave, and Tunisian money cannot leave the country, which will be checked. But I was not checked, and I just spent it all.
💰About expenses:
Cash withdrawal: CNY 500
Accommodation: CNY 539 (5 days, 3 days in a youth hostel, 2 days in a single room)
Credit card: CNY 577
🍕About food:
Tunisian pizza is delicious! Better than Morocco and Egypt, and cheap.
Coffee is also cheap, sitting on the street and ordering a latte for 1.5 dinars, comfortable~
Tagine is N times better than Morocco~
💕About feelings:
Safe, it feels much safer than Morocco, and Tunisia is a country of morning people, everyone closes and rests at around 9 pm. Most stores are open at around 6 am.
Romantic, Sidi Bou Said is more romantic than Chefchaouen in Morocco, perhaps because it is close to the Mediterranean Sea.
El Jem, I was shocked by it, when I was at the entrance of the attraction, I felt like I was traveling through time and space.
Sousse is the slowest city I have ever stayed in, and Tunis City is already very slow. It can be said to be a "sloth" city version.
Tunisia is so beautiful, the Mediterranean sunshine, the Mediterranean sea breeze, it seems to be blowing here all the time, making people feel very happy.
Beautiful Tunisia, visa-free travel to the paradise of North Africa!
🌍 Tired of crowded tourist attractions? Want to go on a spontaneous trip? Tunisia, a country full of history and natural beauty, is waiting for you to explore! 🌍
🏛️ With just a ticket costing over 20 yuan, you can enter the World Heritage Site - El Jem Amphitheater and feel the glory and splendor of ancient Rome! 🗿 The desolation and tranquility along the way make you feel like you are traveling through time and space, back to that legendary era. 🏛️
🏰 Sousse, a seaside medina, is less crowded and more beautiful, peaceful, and leisurely. 🚶♀️ Compared to the bustling Morocco, the slow life here is more intoxicating. Take a leisurely stroll in the morning, feel the historical charm of the ancient city, and enjoy a rare tranquility and leisure. 🏰
🏖️ Hammamet and the blue and white town of Sidi Bou Said are the representatives of Tunisia's beautiful coastline. 🏖️ The blue of the Mediterranean is deep and charming; the ancient city by the sea is perfect for taking photos. 📸 The walls of the blue and white town are white, and the windows, doors, fences, etc. are decorated with blue, making you feel like you are in a fairy tale world, making you linger. 🏰
🚗 Recommended three-day, two-night itinerary: Tunis - El Jem Amphitheater - Sousse; Sousse - Hammamet - Carthage - Sidi Bou Said; Sidi Bou Said - Medina - Bardo National Museum. 🗺️ Let you fully appreciate the charm of Tunisia in a short time! 🚗
🍴 Food is also a highlight of Tunisia! 🍴 Authentic North African cuisine, such as North African eggs, brik, and other delicious snacks, will make you linger. 🍳 Affordable prices and authentic flavors make your taste buds enjoy a feast! 🍴
👥 Tunisia, a country full of European style. 👥 Most people have European faces and only speak French, with a sharp decrease in mosques and no dress restrictions, making it very secular. 👗 The people here are warm and friendly, and will actively help you communicate and carry your luggage, making your trip more relaxed and enjoyable! 👨👩👧👦
🚀 Want to experience the style and charm of North Africa all at once? Visit Tunisia and Morocco together! 🚀 Both countries have many similar attractions and food, making your trip more colorful! 🌍
🔥 Come to Tunisia, a food paradise with fewer people, beautiful scenery, visa-free, and low prices, and start your North African journey! 🔥 Make your trip full of surprises and beautiful memories! 🎒✨

The niche and low-key Sousse Medina
The niche and low-key Sousse Medina
Sousse is the third largest city in Tunisia, a famous port and tourist destination, known as the 'Garden Port of the Mediterranean'. In 1988, UNESCO listed the old city of Sousse as a cultural heritage site, included in the 'World Heritage List'.
Perhaps because I have visited quite a few Mediterranean cities, the seaside of Sousse seems quite ordinary to me. However, the Medina of Sousse should be the most beautiful Medina in Tunisia. Compared to the Medinas of several major cities in Morocco, it is more rustic and quiet here, with no traces of commercialization. Strolling through the Medina gives one a sense of being forgotten by time. The Medina is small and can be explored in half a day.
The iconic building of the Medina is the Great Mosque of Sousse, and the best viewpoint is from the Sousse Ribat fortress opposite the mosque. Climbing up to the watchtower of the fortress, one can overlook the entire Medina.
At the entrance of the Medina is the old port of Sousse, with numerous pleasure boats and a plethora of restaurants and cafes. Taking a boat trip out to sea is also a nice experience if you have the time.
Tips: Sousse is an hour's drive from Tunis, and it is convenient whether you take a train, louage, bus, or drive yourself, as the whole journey is on the highway.
The Sousse Pearl Marriott Resort & Spa is the top-ranked hotel in Sousse, located on the Mediterranean coast. You can choose half-board when booking, and the food for breakfast and dinner is rich and tasty. It is considered to have a high cost-performance ratio among the many Marriott hotels, recommended
Tunisia|The Land of Carpets - The Holy City of Kairouan
🇹🇳Driving 155 kilometers from the capital of Tunisia, the third stop is the fourth largest city, Kairouan.
🛕The ancient capital of Tunisia, Kairouan, is located in the central and eastern part of Tunisia. It was built in 670 and the Aghlabid Dynasty established its capital here from 800 to 909. Since then, it has become famous and one of the four holy places of Islam. In 1988, it was listed as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, known for its unique architectural style and long history.
🏰There are more than 80 mosques, over 100 tombs, dozens of reservoirs and domed indoor markets in the ancient city. Famous buildings include the Great Mosque of Kairouan, the 'Three Gates' Mosque and the Great Reservoir of Aghlabid. Tunisian Muslims believe that making a pilgrimage to Kairouan seven times is equivalent to making a pilgrimage to Mecca once.
🕌The Great Mosque of Kairouan, built in 670 AD, is the first and largest mosque established by Islam in North Africa. It is one of the four major mosques in the world, along with Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem, attracting countless believers to visit every year.
Its appearance is like a huge castle, with a unique and exquisite architectural style and layout. The courtyard is paved with marble, surrounded on three sides by a long arcade supported by 300 stone columns. The connected arcades, rows of stone columns and towering minarets are spectacular and are classic works of Arab architecture and Islamic culture and art. The minaret in the northwest of the mosque is 35 meters high and is the tallest building in the entire ancient city of Kairouan. Standing tens of kilometers away, you can see the towering minaret, which has become one of the iconic buildings of Kairouan.
🚶♀️In addition to the long-standing historical buildings, the ancient city also has a strong market atmosphere. There are numerous shops and stalls on the streets, with a wide variety of goods and the sound of selling everywhere, presenting a charming Arabic market style.
🏵️Among them, the most eye-catching are the beautifully made carpets and exquisitely crafted handicrafts. Some friends bought traditional costumes, some bought characteristic jewelry, which are cheap but of good quality. The carpet weaving industry in Tunisia originated in Kairouan, so Kairouan is also known as 'The Land of Carpets'.
Can’t beat The Medina, Sousse, Tunisia
After escaping the other worldly compound of the all-inclusive hotel I highly recommend staying in the old town, the Medina of any city or town, for a dash of the more authentic side of Tunisia.
The walls surrounding the Mosque may get more crowded and appear overwhelming but step right up, it’s the place to go. Medina in Sousse Tunisia
A trip back in time, first thing that hits you is the multitude of sounds, it’s where locals shop among tourists, and other than mopeds, the web of lanes and alleys are nicely noisy, with a new sight or shout at every turn. Stop pause and listen to the call to prayer mixes with the call to come and look! Food becomes a far more fun feast with a coffee and panini.,fruit smoothies or all types of street vendors offering easily tempting and importantly mot a rip off price like European cities.
Ponder your purchases among the hustle and bustle of the market kids singing, radios, rumbling carts, with modern looking women, kids playing, men chattering along a multitude of lovely leather, fab sportswear, jewellery, vegetables market. Don’t be shy to barter as the friendliness and enthusiasm of the sellers is genuine joy to have tourists back is reflected in the deals and fun to be had.
These traders are way more grateful than any shop here in the UK and end up like a personal shopper! It works both ways. They need the money, you get a bargain. In fact. Don’t even bother bringing much in your suitcase, it’s all here. Two pairs of latest trainers, tracksuit, hoodie and leather handbag set with stuffed camels for the kids later I left happy.
