I love this Hotel. It is in downtown Shanghai and you can literally find anything you want in this building. The Portman Ritz Carlton is the main hotel, but off to the wings of the Shanghai Center are service apartments! And right outside those are a plethora of restaurants. and right in the middle underneath a giant man made waterfall is the Ritz Carlton. This hotel has a gym, pool, Sauna, Business rooms, and comes with an amazing room. Normally after doing a little staycation I would feel ready to go home, but I genuinely wanted to live in this place. All in all I would definitely recommend this place for the food, the amenities and the fantastic view of Shanghai. Portman’s Boteman in West Nanjing Road is a fancy restaurant located in East building of the Shanghai Centre, next to the waterfall wall garden. This restaurant mostly focuses on seafood 🦞, bringing together dishes from Japan, China, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore in an explosion of flavors. As amazing as it sounds, it’s quite expensive too. Be prepared to expend a few hundreds in a small meal. The meat 🥩 dishes look amazingly good. Drinks and cocktails have a nice presentation. There are few good dessert options, too. One is in Pudong Guojin, the other is Portman Ritz-Carlton - this time I focus on sharing the latter, located in one of the most essential locations in Shanghai, basically whether sightseeing, shopping, dining, even business trip, very convenient. When the music box played *Waltz of the Flowers*, its jaws actually opened and closed gently, as if whispering Christmas secrets from a century ago. When the Royal Platinum Afternoon Tea was served, the entire table suddenly came alive—chocolate Christmas pastries on a snowy frosting, the aroma of scones and hot chocolate—and in that moment, I understood: the true meaning of holiday ritual is hiding all tenderness in the details. The Portman demonstrates that good service is not only about actions but also about sincerity. Every staff member genuinely considers the guests' needs. From the doorman’s proactive attitude, the front desk’s sincere smiles, to the gym attendant’s patient introductions, professionalism and sincerity are evident. Before writing this review, I specifically checked other reviews and don’t understand why some people criticize the service here. 🚪 Rooms: As a hotel opened in 1998 and renovated in 2008, it’s incredible how well it has been maintained. However, compared to newly built hotels of the same level, there is still a gap, so I objectively deduct one star. The room is quite spacious, but the bathtub is a bit small. Overall, maintenance is very good; the only flaw is some scratches and fading on the living room coffee table. 🍺 Lounge: Since breakfast and $100 dining credit were included, that was already enough, so I didn’t spend extra on the lounge. For dinner at the Italian restaurant, I spent $100, ordering three dishes and a tiramisu cake. The porcini mushroom pappardelle and M5 Wagyu ribeye were the most impressive! However, I have a small complaint about the seasoning being a bit too salty—less salt would make it perfect. I suggest splitting the $100 credit between afternoon tea and dinner, as two people really can’t finish it all in one dinner. 🍝 Breakfast: The restaurant doesn’t have a wide variety of dishes, but both visually and taste-wise, the ingredients feel better than those at other hotels. For example, the smoked salmon has a chewier texture, the strawberry ice cream has a strong natural fruit flavor, the orange juice is 100% freshly squeezed, and the French toast uses higher-quality jam. After seating, the staff will ask what you want to drink—I highly recommend the latte, which tastes great and looks very photogenic.

Although it's a bit of a walk from the Jing'an Temple and West Nanjing Road metro stations, the hotel is situated in the Shanghai Centre, a building that is itself a part of China's architectural history. Right next door is the luxury brand-filled Plaza 66, and the entire area exudes a strong "old money" vibe. Of course, being a nearly 40-year-old hotel, there are many aspects of the hardware that no longer meet luxury standards. For instance, the room's ceiling height feels quite low, and the 10-meter swimming pool is almost comically small. However, the service at the Portman remains top-notch. The front desk and concierge are highly professional, and any requests are promptly addressed. The rooms have been renovated, and the bedding is very comfortable, though the bathroom design still feels outdated. Amenities include large bottles of Diptyque products. A highlight of the guest rooms is the view from the windows, offering a stunning overlook of the bustling West Nanjing Road. The breakfast area is not very large, and seating is limited, but the food quality is excellent, with no pre-made dishes. The freshly steamed Chinese dim sum is particularly impressive! Overall, the Portman Ritz-Carlton in Shanghai does carry the marks of its era, but this also gives it a certain "retro" charm. If you're looking for cutting-edge hardware, this hotel might not be the best choice. However, if you want to experience Shanghai's "old money" atmosphere, it's still a worthwhile option in the old Jing'an district.

You can stay for around CNY 1,300, but you cannot enjoy Marriott executive benefits. The hotel is in a great location. There is a large shopping mall downstairs, and the Kerry Center is very close. There are many stylish coffee shops around. In addition, the name Portman is interesting. It is the name of the designer and also the owner of the hotel.
