The best daytrip from Hiroshima
#100waysoftravel
It is highly likely that somewhere on the internet you've seen a pic of the Tori gate in the water and wondered or even wanted to see it in person. Let me tell you that famous floating gate happens to be on the Miyajima island. While mostly famous for the shinto shrine Itsukushima. Miyajima makes for a wonderful day trip from Hiroshima.
I have visited it several times in the past and I continue to as the ferry ride comes complimentary on my transport pass. This famous shrine is a UNESCO heritage and one of the most clicked of places in Japan.
The friendly deer are another fascinating inhabitants of this island. They tend to be subjects of many pictures. Once you have explored the shrine area you may take a cable car up to the peak of Mount Misen for breath-taking ocean views and cheeky monkey encounters.

Tempura momiji is a dish where they use homemade cake-like bun filled with different fillings and fry them with tempura batter. It’s very tasty! This shop is located in Miyajima, a 10 minutes ferry ride from Miyajimaguchi station. It takes around 30 mins bus ride from hiroshima station to miyajimaguchi station. There are lots of things to see and lots of food to try on this island~ Please do lah a visit there ~ It is best to visit during Sakura season where you can enjoy the view and food at the same time ~
one of the must visit places in Japan - Itsukushima Shrine
Itsukushima Shrine is a Shinto shrine on Miyajima Island which is near Hiroshima. It is best known for its big floating torii gate .
Miyajima can be reached by ferry from Hiroshima or from Miyajimaguchi- which is faster. after getting off at Miyajima guchi train station, simply walk toward the ferry pier. On the weekend there is often a large crowd so following them would likely lead you to the ferry terminal.
There are two ferry companies running ferries between Miyajimaguchi and Miyajima; the JR ferry and the Miyajima Matsudai Kisen. Both have large passenger ferries and costs ¥360 round trip for the 10 minutes ride. there are four ferries per hour between 8-6pm, and less frequent schedules in the early and evening hours.
After arriving to the island, turn right and walk for 10-15 minutes to reach the shrine. Weekends are particularly busy with tourists so getting there early would help.
There are also many deer roaming around so beware of not feeding them with food- they will follow you!
It is best to reserve 4-5 hours to leisurely walk around the Shrine and the island. if you have time , a few more hours would be even better to walk further, and enjoy a lunch or tea , or even grilled oysters!

Birds View of Miyajima Island
When visiting Miyajima Island in Japan, you have the option to climb up to Mt. Misen to see the whole island from its highest point.
My favourite part of this journey is the breeze you get when you reach the very top. It was by no means a easy walk as paths aren’t properly crafted. On the way up to the peak you’ll see tons of geographical land formations, small temples and even mini statues that some people dress up! It is absolutely adorable!
At the peak of the mountain there is a lookout point where you can enjoy the success of your trek up the mountain. Something cool about being here is that you can see the even smaller island where they grow and harvest oysters. I’ve been told that the way oysters are grown and harvested in Hiroshima is unique as they wait for them to weigh down the wooden planks before harvesting them. Hence ensuring they are fat and juicy for consumption.

A Treasure of History and Culture
The Itsukushima Otori Gate is a sight to behold. It’s truly one of the most amazing pieces of history that you’ll ever come across. This gate is HUGE. It is truly massive. And it’s one of those things that you wouldn’t be able to understand until you actually visit it.
I really enjoyed just being around it and talking to people about the history and cultural significance of it. This particular gate survived the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. On top of that significant history pointer, this gate is also a key cultural piece that acts as a gate between the human and spirit world. This gate was built along with the shrine near the shore to worship the gods of the sea and storm. It’s truly a sight to behold.

Miyajima is just a 30-minute train ride away from Hiroshima and a 15-minute ferry ride to Itsukushima Island. The Itsukushima Jinja is a highly recommended place to visit for its majestic tori gate built on waters. There's also a shopping street nearby where you can get some local snacks and souvenirs.

Hiroshima Must-Visit: The Shrine on the Sea - Itsukushima Shrine
A day trip to Hiroshima's shrines is a journey filled with history and tranquility. The highlight of this trip is the famous Itsukushima Shrine and its surrounding attractions, which not only have a deep cultural heritage but are also full of natural beauty.
As you enter Itsukushima Shrine, the first thing that catches your eye is the red torii gate standing in the sea. During high tide, the torii appears to float on the water, changing from mysterious to magnificent with the shifting light and shadows. With the changing tides, I also approached the torii during low tide to closely observe this ancient structure. It is said that the torii symbolizes the sacred realm of Shinto, and standing in front of it, you can feel a sense of solemnity.
Walking inside the shrine, the traditional architectural style brings a sense of inner peace. Itsukushima Shrine is known for its wooden structure and simple yet elegant design, with each pillar and tile bearing the marks of history. Following the steps of worship, I washed my hands, bowed, and sincerely prayed for the health and safety of my family. Despite the crowds, everyone spoke softly, preserving the serene atmosphere of this sacred place.
On the nearby walking paths, you can also see many free-roaming deer, leisurely mingling with the visitors, adding a touch of playfulness and vitality. After the tour, I tasted the local specialty oyster dishes, whose fresh and juicy flavors are unforgettable. The day's itinerary not only broadened my horizons but also allowed me to experience the charm of Japanese shrine culture.
The Hiroshima shrine day trip left me with rich memories and a sense of fulfillment. Such a journey gave me a deeper understanding of Japan's traditional culture and the beauty of the fusion of nature and history.

[Hiroshima] Visiting Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima - A classic food tour course
How to get there: Take the JR train from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi Station, then walk to JR Miyajimaguchi Pier and take a ferry to Miyajima. It's even more enjoyable if you take the Otorii-bin, which runs closer to the great torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine than the regular route.
Tourist spots: Itsukushima Shrine, Kiyomori Shrine, etc. We recommend walking along the seaside as a pilgrimage route first, and then taking a food tour of the shopping district on the way back to the ferry terminal.
Food: In addition to oysters and conger eel rice, there are cute drink stands scattered around the area, with a wide variety of refreshing dishes made with local specialty lemons.

The beautiful flow of time on the mysterious island of Miyajima
#FuriTabi
I went on a road trip to Hiroshima with my university friends to visit the place where my classmate was transferred.
It was the perfect place to spend some wonderful time with old friends who I hadn't seen in a long time.
It was my first time to Miyajima since I was in elementary school. Old memories came back to me vividly, and new emotions spread throughout my mind. The solemn atmosphere of Itsukushima Shrine, combined with the clear blue sky, was so beautiful it cleansed my soul.
With my classmate as my guide, I was able to enjoy local spots, making the whole trip special. It was a wonderful trip that will stay in my memory, both for the scenery and the time I spent with people.

MIYAJIMA @ Night
Miyajima is a scenic island that is easy to reach by train / tram and ferry from Hiroshima. The island is famous for its beautiful UNESCO-protected Itsukushima Shrine dating back to 1168, built on posts in the water. The wird that I can describe the place is MAJESTIC🥰
To World Heritage
I went to Miyajima from Hiroshima city by streetcar. You can get there by JR or boat, but since there is the Hiroshima Electric Railway, I took the streetcar even though it took longer. It was about 70 minutes from right in front of the hotel. I arrived at the ferry terminal while looking at the city's facilities and the sea. It was low tide, so I was able to get close to the torii gate. It was a hot day, so the lemonade was a real treat. A parasol is a must at this time of year! #100TravelStyle #MiyajimaFerry #MiyajimaPier

Loved this place I visited with my family
Hiroshima・Itsukushima
Miyajima (Itsukushima), one of Japan's three most scenic spots (along with Amanohashidate in Kyoto Prefecture and Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture), became widely known from the writings of a Confucian scholar during the Edo period.
I visited Matsushima last time, but I didn't find the scenery that impressive. However, I felt that this place truly offers genuine scenic beauty. While Itsukushima Shrine is famous, the entire island is elegant and beautiful.
The coastal road leading to Itsukushima Shrine is nice, but Mount Misen also offers spectacular views (though I couldn't visit it this time due to time constraints).
It was featured in the travel show "Tabizaru 16: Angirls Tanaka's Recommended Trip to Hiroshima Prefecture," and next time, I would like to visit Mount Misen as well.
About half of the tourists are foreigners (Westerners), 30% are school trip students, and 20% are general Japanese tourists. Unlike in the past, there are now many more foreign visitors. They seem to like the deer. They were often seen playing with them in Nara as well.
Lastly, there are two shuttle ferries, JR and Miyajima Matsudai Kisen, with different departure times. If you don't check carefully and enter the gate (IC cards are accepted), you might feel a bit frustrated if the other ferry departs first. This time, I took the Miyajima Matsudai Kisen ferry to the island and returned by JR ferry.

Seamlessly integrated
The Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island in Japan enshrines the three Munakata goddesses: Ichikishimahime, Tagorihime, and Tagitsuhime. The Munakata goddesses are revered as the guardians of the sea, maritime safety, good fortune, and the fulfillment of wishes. The shrine is renowned for its unique architectural beauty, with palace-style buildings showcasing exquisite craftsmanship. Originally built in 593, it was later reconstructed in 1168 by the then-powerful Taira no Kiyomori and has been preserved to this day. The unique configuration protruding into the sea, contrasted with the beautiful mountains in the background, reflects Kiyomori's ambition and power. Centered around the main shrine (honden), several other shrines are arranged around it, including a Noh stage, music hall, and various pavilions. These buildings are connected by a 300-meter-long corridor, seamlessly integrated. The bright red color of the shrine and the grand torii gate is said to ward off evil spirits. The buildings are also coated with vermilion lacquer for preservation.

Miyajima @ Hiroshima
Miyajima Shrine, also known as Itsukushima Shrine, is one of Japan's most iconic and picturesque landmarks, located on the island of Miyajima in Hiroshima Bay. Renowned for its "floating" torii gate, the shrine offers a captivating blend of natural beauty, cultural significance, and historical heritage.
History and Significance
Itsukushima Shrine dates back to the 6th century, with its current structure established in 1168 by Taira no Kiyomori, a powerful military leader. The shrine is dedicated to the Shinto deities of the sea and storms, and it has been a place of worship for centuries. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its unique architecture and cultural importance.
Floating Torii Gate
The most famous feature of Miyajima Shrine is its large torii gate, which appears to float on the water during high tide. This optical illusion is created by the gate's placement in the bay, and it has become one of the most photographed sights in Japan. Visitors can walk out to the gate during low tide, allowing for an up-close view of this remarkable structure.
Scenic Beauty
Miyajima is renowned for its stunning natural beauty. The island is covered in lush forests and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding sea and mountains. The serene setting adds to the spiritual atmosphere of the shrine, making it a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
Cultural Experiences
Visitors to Miyajima Shrine can immerse themselves in a variety of cultural experiences. Traditional Shinto ceremonies are regularly held at the shrine, and visitors can participate in rituals such as purification rites and offering prayers. The island is also home to numerous festivals throughout the year, including the annual Water Fireworks Festival in summer and the Autumn Festival.
Local Attractions
In addition to Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima Island boasts several other attractions. The Daisho-in Temple, with its beautiful gardens and numerous statues, is worth a visit. The island's hiking trails, such as the path up Mount Misen, offer spectacular views and the chance to see wild deer, which roam freely and are considered sacred messengers of the gods.
Getting There
Miyajima Island is accessible by ferry from the mainland city of Hiroshima. The ferry ride offers scenic views of the Seto Inland Sea and takes about 10 minutes. Once on the island, the shrine is a short walk from the ferry terminal, making it easily accessible for visitors.
