After the eruption of the Yellowstone volcano, lava and volcanic tuff buried the area. The high-temperature gases and hot water brought by geothermal activity weakened the rocks. Rivers eroded and carved out the canyon between Tower Falls and Lower Falls. The canyon presents different colors. The red color is caused by the oxidation of iron compounds in the acidic volcanic rock rhyolite that was cooked by the liquid brought by geothermal activity.
