Sydney, also known as Xueli, is located on the southeast coast of Australia and is part of New South Wales, Australia. It is the capital of New South Wales, Australia. Sydney covers an area of about 12,368.193 square kilometers and has 35 local government districts under its jurisdiction. It consists of the Sydney urban area and 33 suburbs, with a population of about 5.03 million (as of 2016). The main language is English, and the main ethnic groups are Italians, Greeks, Lebanese, etc. Sydney is known as the "New York" of the Southern Hemisphere and has been rated as one of the most livable cities in the world by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme for many years. Sydney is also the host city of several important international sports events, having hosted the 1938 Commonwealth Games, the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and the 2003 Rugby World Cup. In 1770, British naval captain James Cook discovered Sydney's Botany Bay and returned to Europe. In 1796, during Macquarie's tenure as Governor of New South Wales, Sydney had initial development. The 1830s and 1840s were the stages of Sydney's urban development. In the early 20th century, Sydney developed rapidly, with a large influx of new immigrants from Europe and Asia, gradually becoming a world-famous international metropolis.
