Otaru - Nice, quaint town

It's an excellent day trip out of Sapporo. You can reach Otaru from Sapporo via Airport Express (Y1590 one-way) that is covered by the Hokkaido Railway Pass. Travel time is only about 35 min. There are 2 to 3 trains each hour so it is really convenient. Once you've reached Otaru, go to the Tourist Information Centre to get a detailed map with all the places of interest well marked up. You can then plan your route (a loop of course, to return to the station by the end of day). Featured food: Sankakutei's Sanshoku-don (3 types of seafood, but you can always opt for other kaisendon), Sa Wa Wa Warabi Mochi and Ice-cream, Cremia Rainbow Ice-cream, Otaru Dango, Naruto Fried Half-chicken.
