Church on Our Lady's Mount.

Behind Funchal, the capital of Madeira, there is a mountain called Our Lady's Mount by the locals, because there is a church on the mountain (Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte). Portugal began to colonize Madeira in the early 15th century. In 1470, Adão Gonçalves Ferreira, the first Portuguese born on Madeira, built a small church dedicated to the Virgin Mary on this mountain. The current church on Our Lady's Mount was founded in 1741, but the church was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1748 a few months after it was built. The church was rebuilt in 1818 and is now the most dazzling building on the mountain.
