"Two nights at Laochengenguan was absolutely fantastic! First, it was spotless and well-equipped. Second, the breakfast was abundant and delicious, even coming with fruit. Third, the service was truly top-notch; their patience made us feel right at home! (I booked two nights, but needed to switch rooms in between, which shows how popular this place is. However, on the morning of the second day, we were rushing to Hengshan Hanging Temple and completely forgot about the room change. The owner actually called to check if we’d like to move, as the new room was already cleaned. Of course, we happily agreed! This way, it didn't disrupt our sightseeing, and we could rest as soon as we returned! A big thank you to the owner once again! Staying at Laochengenguan is perfect for visiting attractions and shopping."

"Our stay was amazing. The hotel is new, spotless, with all kind of amenities and very stylish. Impeccable attention to detail. But as impressed we were with the hotel the best part is the staff! Liu made us feel at home, she is sweet and adorable, made every effort to accommodate every request, helped us with tours and lent us some bicycles to go around the city. She even organised a take away breakfast for us early in the morning as we were leaving super early!! 11 out of 10! (The cleaning lady was so cute too, going all the way to please us)"

"This is an old-school five-star hotel with a great location, making it super convenient to get to the Ancient City. There's a really helpful guy at the lobby who was amazing; he answered all our questions and even booked a shuttle for us to Yungang Grottoes, which was fantastic. The stay also included complimentary bathhouse tickets, but unfortunately, we didn't have time to use them. However, we did get to enjoy authentic local dishes at the hotel restaurant, which was great. Coincidentally, we even ran into friends at the hotel restaurant on our last day – what a small world! It really shows how popular this place is. Datong is definitely worth revisiting."

"A very pleasant stay at the Pipa Old Inn. A very historical building, though the place is equipped with all necessary modern amenities save for an elevator. Fortunately the staff very helpful assisted us with lugging up our heavy luggage to our room on the 3rd floor. Very beautifully decorated and strategically located in the heart of Datong Ancient City. Very pleasant and helpful staff who helped us plan and arrange our trips around Datong though sadly, they weren't very proficient in English (but that's common in China). Free breakfast was included in our stay and there was a decent spread though the menu didn't change much over our stay there save for one or two vegetable dishes being rotated. Overall definitely worth a return trip and stay in Datong Ancient City."

The first floor features an open-plan coffee and book bar, with an entire wall of books exuding the delicate scent of paper and ink. Guests are welcome to browse freely. In the afternoon, ordering a pour-over coffee and settling into a soft sofa with a book, with sunlight streaming through the glass windows, it felt as if time itself had slowed down. This isn't just a hotel lobby; it's clearly the study of my dreams! 🛏️ Impeccable Details, Beyond Expectations The room's design continues the overall artistic and literary aesthetic. Wooden furniture, warm lighting, and thoughtfully displayed local characteristics and surrounding information reveal the owner's excellent taste. The bedding was incredibly comfortable, ensuring a sound night's sleep. Even more surprisingly, the soundproofing in the room was exceptional. There was no need to worry about being disturbed by the sounds from the book bar or the street, truly achieving a peaceful oasis amidst the hustle and bustle. 💖 Thoughtful Service, as Warm as Coming Home The front desk lady had a sweet smile and proactively introduced the hotel's features and nearby dining options during check-in. Any questions I had were answered promptly, which made me feel very much at ease. This stay completely exceeded my expectations. It's not just a place to rest your feet, but a healing space where one can slow down and enjoy a moment of tranquility. I highly recommend it to all book lovers, coffee enthusiasts, and friends who appreciate aesthetics! The next time I visit this city, this will definitely be my top choice."

"The hotel was gorgeous, very clean and the location was great. The hosts running the hotel were extremely friendly, helping us out with anything we needed. Breakfast was made fresh and really delicious. They even offered us coffee which was clearly beyond what they usually offer but we really appreciated it. They also offered to bring us to the train station saving us a cab ride. I would definitely recommend staying here! You won't regret staying at this beautiful property with these very welcoming people."

"I had booked the Yungang Hotel, but upon check-in, the hotel kindly upgraded us to the adjacent Wyndham Grand Hotel. While I initially appreciated this gesture, after checking in, I found that Wyndham's management left much to be desired. Firstly, upon arrival, I noticed uncleaned water stains on the sink faucet and bathroom light switch. Later that evening, when I used the hairdryer, dust and lint flew up from the floor, indicating that it hadn't been properly cleaned during regular housekeeping. The breakfast experience was particularly dreadful. Wyndham and Yungang shared a combined breakfast service, with food stations set up at opposite ends of the dining area. Crucially, one station offered several more dishes than the other, and the two stations were at least 50 meters apart. If you sat at one end, getting food from the other was too far. Moreover, it was incredibly crowded, and the hotel did not implement any crowd control measures. If you went to get more food, your table would often be taken by someone else when you returned, and the hotel appeared unconcerned about this issue. In conclusion, while Wyndham's newly opened facilities (hardware) are indeed excellent, the 'soft management' (service and operational aspects) clearly needs significant improvement."

For Chinese options, there's an excellent variety of warm congee, steamed buns, fried dough sticks, and various side dishes. Everything is prepared authentically, tasting just like homemade. Western choices include bread, ham, fried eggs, and coffee, all of which are of excellent quality. They also offer freshly squeezed juices that are crisp and nutritious. Whether you prefer Chinese or Western breakfast, you'll find something you love here to kickstart an energetic day. While the hotel's pool isn't huge, the water is crystal clear, and you can often see staff regularly testing and maintaining it. The area around the pool is also very clean and tidy, equipped with comfortable lounge chairs where you can relax after a swim. A refreshing dip here is perfect for both exercise and relaxation. Finally, I must commend the hotel's thoughtful attention to detail – they provide L'Occitane toiletries. L'Occitane's bath products are renowned for their high quality, fresh and pleasant scent, and rich lather. After using them, skin and hair feel clean and comfortable, which truly adds a luxurious touch to the stay. Overall, Wyndham Grand Shanxi Datong excels in both its facilities and service quality. The next time I visit Datong, I will definitely choose to stay here again, and I highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Datong for leisure or business!"

"Everything was ok. Room was clean, with nice views and as depicted in the web. Staff is kind and helpful. You can ask them for advice to visit the main hotpots in Datong. But bear in mind that this is an b&b with no proper reception desk. You need to contact the property in advance, or go to the liquor shop next door otherwise. The hotel does not provide real towels but disposable towels (made of paper)."
