Beijing's 2nd Ring Road hides a "Little Jiangnan"!
If you think Dongcheng District in Beijing only has the Forbidden City and Nanluoguxiang, you'll miss the most healing treasure of this spring! Sanlihe Park—this free park tucked deep in the Qianmen Hutongs—is going viral on Xiaohongshu as the "Little Jiangnan within the 2nd Ring." Its secret to popularity: in spring, it becomes a flowing oil painting gallery. Peach blossoms, crabapples, and magnolias bloom in turn along both sides of the riverbank, reflected in the clear creek water. Together with the ancient bluestone paths, leisurely black swans, and traditional gray-tiled houses of the locals, they form a vivid "Spring Residence in the Capital" painting. The best photo spot is the wooden boardwalk next to the Spring Breeze Café, which has become the top scene for capturing "peach blossoms, flowing water, and black swans" in one frame.
[How to Enjoy: Immersive Walks through Hutongs and Waterways]
· Main Route Along the River: The park is built along Sanlihe River, about 1 kilometer long. It’s recommended to enter from the entrance near the "Xianyu Kou" archway on Qianmen East Road, then stroll along the water flow direction, passing reeds, pavilions, and small bridges. The endpoint reaches Xixinglong Street, offering a unique experience of "water flowing through streets and alleys."
· Hutong Exploration Side Route: The park seamlessly integrates with surrounding hutongs like Caoxiang and others. Feel free to leave the main path and dive into the hutongs to see old Beijing gentlemen playing chess by the river, residents watering flowers at their doors, and experience the poetic blend of urban life and natural scenery.
· Artistic Rest Stops: Besides Spring Breeze Café, there are other small and charming cafés like VOYAGE COFFEE along the way. Sitting by the river with a drink and watching the shifting light and shadows is the best way to savor the slow pace of the old city.
[Practical Information]
· Address: Intersection of Qianmen East Road and Xianyu Kou Street, Dongcheng District.
· Transportation: Exit G of Qianmen Station on Metro Lines 2 and 8, about a 5-10 minute walk. Walking or cycling is strongly recommended as parking in the hutong area is extremely difficult.
· Best Time to Visit: Late March to mid-late April is the peak blooming period. Weekday early mornings or workday mornings have fewer people, while afternoons and weekends are busier.
· Nearby Attractions: After visiting, you can also explore Beijing Fang (a modern cultural district), Yangmeizhu Xiejie (artistic shops), or head to Qianmen Street to taste traditional old-brand delicacies.
· Friendly Reminder: The park is free to enter. Please protect the environment, visit quietly, and do not disturb residents or feed the animals.
Escape the hustle and bustle, spend an hour strolling along this "Peach Blossom Creek" inside the 2nd Ring, and you will surely be amazed: the heart of Beijing’s old city hides such a lively and healing spring.
Sanlihe Park is located on the east side of Qianmen Street and is named after the fact that it is three miles away from Zhengyangmen. In order to restore the historical features of old Beijing, Dongcheng District launched the Sanlihe green landscape renovation project in 2016. After the renovation, Sanlihe has reproduced the beautiful scenery of "water flowing through the streets and alleys, courtyards and houses".
Beijing Sanlihe Park is located on the east side of Qianmen East Street, Dongcheng District, Beijing, west of the intersection of Zhonglucaoyuan and Caochang. As early as the Ming Dynasty, a trench was dug here for flood discharge, so it was called Sanlihe. After vicissitudes of life, the original Sanlihe has disappeared. The current Sanlihe Park is a landscape project planned and constructed in 2016. It was completed and opened to the public in 2017. In the bustling city, an urban park like a Jiangnan water village has appeared, and citizens have a new place for leisure and entertainment.
📍Detailed address: Sanlihe Park is located on the east side of Xianyukou Hutong, Qianmen. After passing Qianmen East Street, go south along Beiluyuan and Nanluyuan Hutong. 🚗Transportation strategy: It is close to Qiaowan on Metro Line 7 and is on the north side of the road 🕙Opening hours: Open all day 💰Ticket price: No ticket fee 🌟Highlights: Although Sanlihe Park does not cover a large area, the river is clear, the small bridges flow, and it has the style of a Jiangnan water town. There are many koi and pairs of mandarin ducks in the river, and there is also a section full of reeds, which is full of wild fun. 💗Recommendation reason: Sanlihe was an important drainage system in the old Beijing city. It was a river that appeared during the Zhengtong period of the Ming Dynasty. According to "Tianfu Guangji", "During the Zhengtong period of the Ming Dynasty, the city moat was built and the dam was built to store water. Fearing that the rain would overflow, the moat was opened in the low-lying area southeast of Zhengyang Bridge to drain the water, and the name of Sanlihe began." Later, it became a sewage river called Longxugou. The Beijing Municipal Government reorganized the planning after the Olympics and restored the green grass and gurgling water of Sanli River. 📌Tips: There are pavilions by the river for people to rest, and there is also a coffee shop called Spring Breeze. You can come here in the afternoon to have afternoon tea, enjoy the beautiful scenery, bask in the sun, and chat. It feels great!
Walking along Qianmen Street, exiting Xianyukou Snack Street, crossing the road, you will arrive at the newly built Sanlihe Park. I came here once two years ago. The park is not big, east to Zhushikou Street. It is close to the residential area, the environment is well maintained, the water is very clear, and there are many large goldfish. There is also a pavilion for rest. Night tour is also very good, with a special interest.
At the east entrance of Xianyukou Hutong in Beijing's Qianmen area, across Qianmen East Road, there is a small river. Because it is three miles away from the Lizheng Gate (now Qianmen) of the Yuan Dynasty, this small river is called Sanlihe. Reeds have grown here since the Yuan Dynasty, so there are South Luwei Hutong and North Luwei Hutong. Last year, Sanlihe was overhauled, the canal was dredged, re-planted with reeds, and built into Sanlihe Park. Luwei Hutong has also regained its scenery.
In spring and autumn, the morning and evening are very quiet, the scenery is pleasant, and walking in it is refreshing.
Qianmen Sanlihe was originally a drainage channel for the moat of the old Beijing city. Later, it became a stinking ditch. In the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was converted into an underground culvert after treatment. In 2017, after the evacuation and transformation of the surrounding alleys, the culvert was restored to an open channel, and flowers, trees and plants were planted, and leisure pavilions and other landscapes were built, which became the current Sanlihe Park. The river water is clear and the bottom is visible. The banks are shaded by green trees and the grass is lush. The small fish in the river swim happily, as if walking into a pocket-sized Jiangnan water town. The surrounding alleys have also been protected and repaired. Many cultural relics protection buildings, such as Qiaojia Silver Bank, Guangxi Guild Hall, Guizhou Guild Hall, etc., can be learned about the guild hall culture and unique hutong culture in the history of Qianmen during the journey.
