Osaka to Nagoya Shinkansen baggage allowance

Shinkansen luggage policies can vary slightly by line, but baggage allowance is uniform across all Shinkansen routes. If you're travelling with oversized luggage, you'll need to review the Shinkansen luggage rules a bit more closely.

Osaka to Nagoya Shinkansen baggage allowance

Standard luggage allowance

  • Passengers may bring up to 2 pieces of luggage for no additional fee (not including personal items like handbags, umbrellas).
  • Each item must weigh 30 kg or less.
  • Total luggage dimensions must not exceed 250 cm.
  • Bags with total dimensions up to 160 cm can be placed in at your feet, in the overhead racks or in the dedicated luggage area.

Oversized baggage

Baggage with total dimensions between 161 cm and 250 cm (height + width + depth) are considered oversized baggage. Passengers with oversized baggage must reserve an oversized baggage seat on lines between some major cities (same price as regular reserved seat). These seats are usually found at the last row of each carriage, and oversized bags can be placed in the space behind your seat. Travelling without a reservation for this luggage space can result in a fine on some lines.

Shinkansen luggage tips

  • If you need oversized baggage space, make sure you book your seat early, as they are limited in number and often sell out during busy seasons.
  • Green Class (i.e. First Class) carriages usually include extra space for luggage, which is particularly helpful in peak months like May, August and December to early January.
  • Bicycles must be folded or disassembled and stored in a bike bag.
  • Luggage forwarding services - such as Luggage Express - can have your luggage delivered from your departure hotel to your arrival hotel so you can travel light.

Shinkansen child tickets from Osaka to Nagoya

There are three categories of Shinkansen child tickets, each with different pricing and age limits. Consult the different ticket categories below.

CategoryAge GroupFare PriceOsaka to Nagoya
Adult ticket12+ years old100% (Full Price)Rs 10,818.05
Child6 – 11 years old50% (Half Price)Rs 5,409.02

BabyUnder 1 year oldFree0

When you need to buy a child ticket for an infant

Infants (1 to 5 years) and babies (under 1 year) generally travel free on Shinkansen trains, except in some specific situations as follows:

  • When they need their own seat: If your infant is occupying their own reserved seat - rather than sitting on your lap - then you must buy them a Child Ticket.
  • When you're traveling with three infants: One fare-paying passenger can be accompanied by up to two infants for free. For three or more accompanying infants, a Child fare is required for the third and subsequent infants.
  • When traveling alone: Infants traveling unaccompanied (rare for tourists, but a rule nonetheless) requires a Child ticket.

Reserved seat prices for children: Ordinary, Green Car and Gran Class

If your kid needs their own reserved seat, a charge will apply for their seat. This will vary depending on the carriage class:

  • Ordinary Car: A 50% charge of the total fare applies for Children's reserved seats (ages 6-11).
  • Green Car & Gran Class: The Luxury Surcharge for Green and Gran Class does not have a child discount. You must pay the full adult rate for children's seats.

Refunds and changes for Osaka to Nagoya Shinkansen tickets

The Shinkansen refund and change policy allows for some flexibility when it comes to your Shinkansen ticket, but some charges may apply depending on your ticket type.

Changing your Shinkansen booking

  • Standard fare Shinkansen tickets allow a one-time change free of charge for the same type of ticket for unused tickets. If you change to a ticket of greater value, you must pay the difference. If you change to a ticket of lesser value, you will be refunded the difference.
  • However, specific Shinkansen modification policies vary by ticket type: deep discount and advance fares usually do not permit changes, or if they do, they may not provide refunds in fare difference. As such, always check the conditions of your specific ticket type.

Refund fees

  • Any unused, valid Shinkansen ticket can be refunded, but will be subject to a cancellation charge according to ticket type. You must apply for a refund before the train departs, otherwise you cannot be refunded. Cancellation charges vary according to ticket type and proximity to travel date.

What happens if you miss your train?

  • If you miss your reserved seat train, your ticket is no longer valid and you will not be entitled to a refund. This applies to Limited Express reserved seat tickets, Green Car tickets, sleeper carriages and reserved seats.
  • Limited Express reserved seat tickets, however, can be used for travel on non-reserved seats on later trains on the same day as your missed train. Using reserved seating in this scenario incurs the full price of the Limited Express reserved seat fare.

Select your seat preference and book your tickets

Choose from various seat preferences on Shinkansen, limited express, and other trains. First-time bookers enjoy free seat selection!

*Available seat types are subject to actual train information. If your seat booking fails, we will fully refund the booking fee for your seat preference. We will also do our best to ensure your group members can sit together.

  • How much is the bullet train from Osaka to Nagoya?

Shinkansen fares from Osaka to Nagoya vary by route, train type, and seat class. The lowest fare is Rs 6,267.79, and the journey takes approx. 49m. Reserved seat fares are slightly higher, and Green Car (first class) fares cost even more. You can check real-time fares for all available trains on our platform.

  • Do I need to reserve seats on bullet trains?

Booking Shinkansen seats is optional, but recommended. Reserved seats guarantee a fixed seat and are included in the base fare (no extra charge). Most trains offer non-reserved seats (except Nozomi on some routes), but during peak times (holidays, commuter rush hours), non-reserved carriages can be very crowded. If you want to guarantee a seat, sit with your companions, or travel during busy periods, please book in advance. You can book at station windows, ticket machines, or through our online booking platform.

  • Do Shinkansen trains run at night?

Shinkansen trains generally operate from 06:00 to 22:30, and the last train time varies by route and direction. There are no night sleeper services on the Shinkansen. If you miss the last train, you can choose a night highway coach, stay at a nearby hotel, or take an airport bus—please plan your evening itinerary based on the last train time.

  • Can I use my Suica/IC card to pay for Shinkansen tickets?

No—IC cards such as Suica, ICOCA, and PASMO cannot be used as Shinkansen tickets. Riding the Shinkansen requires you to separately purchase paper tickets or e-tickets (except for a small number of commuter IC fare products). However, IC cards can be used for regular trains, metros, and buses, as well as for purchases at station shops, convenience stores, and vending machines. To take the Shinkansen, please buy tickets online via Trip.com, or at station ticket windows or ticket machines.

  • Is there luggage storage at Shinkansen stations?

Yes, most major Shinkansen stations provide coin lockers and staffed luggage storage counters. Lockers may be limited during peak travel times—please plan ahead.

  • How early should I book Shinkansen tickets?

Tickets go on sale at 10:00 AM, exactly 1 month before departure. During peak travel seasons—such as Golden Week, Obon, and the New Year holidays—popular trains sell out quickly. We highly recommend booking the moment sales open to secure your seats.

  • Are Shinkansen stations wheelchair accessible?

Yes, all major Shinkansen stations provide accessible passages, lifts, accessible toilets, and accessible routes. Shinkansen trains feature designated wheelchair spaces. You can book assistance services in advance through JR or your travel agent for the smoothest experience.

  • How do overnight coaches compare to Shinkansen?

Yes, highway buses (night or day services) connect major cities and cost less than the Shinkansen. They are slower but offer great value for money. The popular long haul route from Osaka to Nagoya takes approx. 3h 50m. Wi-Fi and power outlets are usually provided on board.

  • Are there observation carriages on Shinkansen?

Some Shinkansen trains offer Green cars (first class) with panoramic windows or special observation seats. The Tokaido Shinkansen and some limited express trains feature scenic views along the route. For example, you can see Mount Fuji from a right-side seat on the Tokaido Shinkansen.

  • How can I see Mount Fuji from the Shinkansen?

When riding the Tokaido Shinkansen, you can spot Mount Fuji between Shin-Yokohama Station and Shin-Fuji Station. Choose a seat on the side facing Mount Fuji (Seat E in standard carriages and Seat D in Green cars). The best viewing window is within 3 minutes after passing Shin-Fuji Station. Clear days and winter months (December–February) offer the best views. As weather changes, visibility cannot be guaranteed.

  • Should I buy a new ticket if I miss my Shinkansen?

Reserved seat tickets: You can take the next train on the same day, but you will need to sit in a non-reserved seat. If you wish to reserve a seat, please book a new express train ticket at the station. Non-reserved seat tickets: You can take the next train on the same day.

  • Can I eat on the Shinkansen?

Passengers are allowed to eat on the Shinkansen. Most seats are equipped with cup holders and fold-out tables for convenient dining. Many passengers buy an ekiben (traditional Japanese railway bento) before boarding, which is a popular choice. You can also bring your own snacks and drinks. Please clean up after eating to keep the carriage clean. Eating on regular short-distance trains, however, is not in line with Japanese etiquette.

  • When to avoid trains in Japan?

Peak times for train travel in Japan are approx. 7:00 AM–9:00 AM and 5:00 PM–7:30 PM on weekdays. The most crowded time is usually 8:00 AM–8:30 AM on inbound trains heading to central Tokyo and Osaka. Commuter lines can be extremely crowded, while Shinkansen and long-distance trains are usually much less affected. Additionally, please avoid peak travel seasons: Golden Week (late April to early May), Obon (mid-August), and New Year (Dec 29–Jan 3), when train demand is highest. For a comfortable experience, please travel during off-peak times and book seats in advance during busy periods.

  • What should I do if I miss my Shinkansen?

If you miss your Shinkansen: Reserved seat tickets usually allow you to take the next train on the same day, but you can only ride in a non-reserved carriage. If you wish to guarantee a seat, you can book a new express train ticket at the station. Non-reserved seat tickets allow you to take the next train on the same day. Please note that unused tickets can usually be refunded before departure (a processing fee applies). Policies may vary by operator and fare type. Please view the ticket terms and conditions or enquire with station staff.

  • Is there Wi-Fi on Shinkansen trains?

Most Shinkansen trains offer free Wi-Fi, including the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu, Tohoku, Joetsu, Hokuriku, and Hokkaido lines (you can look for "Shinkansen_WiFi" or an operator-specific SSID). Connection quality varies by region, especially in tunnels and rural areas. To ensure a stable Internet connection throughout your journey, we recommend preparing a travel eSIM or a portable Wi-Fi router as a backup.

  • How does the Shinkansen boarding process work?

We recommend arriving at the station 30–45 minutes early. Find your platform on the departure information board, wait behind the yellow safety line on the platform, and board the carriage shown on your ticket. Use the same ticket to enter the station and to exit at your destination.

  • Can I use the JR Pass on Nozomi or Mizuho trains?

The standard JR Pass is valid on Hikari, Kodama, Sakura, and Tsubame trains. Nozomi and Mizuho (the fastest services) require an additional Nozomi/Mizuho limited express ticket. Pass holders can ride these high-speed trains after paying the difference.

  • What is a women-only carriage on trains in Japan?

Many commuter trains feature women-only carriages. This is a safety measure during peak hours. The carriages and active times are marked with bilingual signs in Japanese and English. Male passengers should avoid entering these carriages during the designated periods.

  • Is there a tourist discount pass besides JR Pass?

Yes, regional passes such as the Kansai Region Pass, Tokyo Metro Pass, and Hakone Pass offer considerable savings for specific areas. When travelling only within a city, topping up a Suica/ICOCA card is convenient and saves you from queuing to buy tickets.

  • Can I get a refund if my Shinkansen is cancelled?

If your train is cancelled due to weather or operational issues, you can usually get a full refund or change your ticket for free. You can contact JR staff at the station, or if you booked on Trip.com, contact customer support for assistance. Specific policies vary by operator and fare type.

  • Is English spoken on Shinkansen trains?

Most Shinkansen announcements are bilingual in Japanese and English. Staff at major stations speak some English. Translation apps and signs are helpful for navigation. Train attendants' English might be limited. A translation app or phrasebook is very helpful when making specific requests.

  • Can I cancel or change one person's ticket in a group booking?

Partial cancellation is supported. You can cancel individual passengers in a group booking. Partial changes are only supported by some suppliers. Please refer to your ticket policies for details.

  • What are the luggage restrictions on the Shinkansen?

The maximum luggage size for all JR trains is 250 cm (length + width + height). Only the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu, and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen require you to reserve luggage seats in advance. Luggage with total dimensions of 160–250 cm (length + width + height) requires dedicated space. If you bring oversized luggage without reserving in advance, you will be charged a fee of JPY 1,000.
