Took a break from the usual city wandering to check out some heavy-duty history in Bukhara. Ended up at the Ark Citadel and the Bolo-Hauz Mosque right across the square.
The Citadel is essentially a massive fortress made of mud and earth. The scale is impressive, though the inside feels a bit empty—mostly just standard museum displays. But walking up the ramparts for the old town view is definitely worth the ticket, especially when the evening sun hits the clay walls.
Right across the empty square is the Bolo-Hauz Mosque. Honestly, from a design perspective, I liked this one more. The twenty tall wooden pillars at the front have some really intricate carving. The contrast between the rough, brutalist feel of the fortress and the detailed woodwork of the mosque is the best part of this spot.
You don't need to spend half a day here. An hour and a half is plenty. Go late in the afternoon to avoid the heat. It’s a decent, quick stop before heading back to the quieter back alleys.
