Cangshan Mountain, also called Diancangshan Mountain, is located on the west side of the Erhai Lake in Dali. It's scenery is spectacular and it is one of the four scenic spots of Dali. The main peak of the mountain is snowy all year round and the mountain is often shrouded in clouds. You can take the cablecar up the mountain or walk up the mountain. The Chongsheng Temple And The Three-Pagoda Culture Tourist Area

8.1
4.7/5
13.9k reviews
The Chongsheng Temple And The Three-Pagoda Culture Tourist Area is located 1.5 km north of Dali Ancient Town, serving as the royal temple during the Dali Kingdom period. With Erhai Lake to the east and Cangshan Mountain's Yinglue Peak to the west, the scenery here is exceptionally beautiful. The three pagodas were originally part of Chongsheng Temple. While the temple seen today is a reconstruction, the pagodas remain as millennia-old relics and a major highlight for visitors. The tour route begins at the attraction's main gate, where the three pagodas immediately come into view atop the central axis staircase. The large central pagoda, called Qianxun Pagoda, stands majestically with two smaller pagodas to its north and south, forming a grand tripartite layout. The three pagodas resemble the Small Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi'an. The perfect spot to photograph them is the "Three Pagodas Reflection Pool" in the Three Pagodas Reflection Park located diagonally behind them, where travelers can capture the pagodas and their reflections in the water. Many travelers take photos here as souvenirs. Walking around the pagodas and following the central axis inward, visitors can view Nanzhao and Dali Kingdom artifacts excavated during the pagodas' restoration at the cultural relics exhibition hall, admire the 16-ton Nanzhao Jianji Bell in the bell tower, see the Rain Copper Guanyin in the Rain Copper Guanyin Hall, and finally arrive at the Chongsheng Temple. The current Chongsheng Temple was rebuilt in 2005, boasting a grand scale that reflects the imperial monastery's grandeur during the Nanzhao and Dali periods. The temple houses over 10,000 dragon designs of various types, making it the temple with the most dragon depictions in China. Additionally, it features one of the country's largest cowhide drums, measuring 3.1 m in diameter and made from a single piece of cowhide, which is worth seeing.Dali City · 18.8km from Yangbi

The Gantong Ropeway is one of the three cable cars on Cangshan mountain in Dali, located at the foot of Shengying peak and adjacent to Gantong temple and Jizhao nunnery. With a total length of over 2,000 m, the cable car starts from the station near Gantong temple and ascends to the mid-mountain station near Qingbi stream. It operates with enclosed transparent cabins, each accommodating six passengers, offering a smooth ride and expansive views. During the journey, you can admire the pine-covered valleys on Cangshan's slopes and, on clear days, overlook Erhai lake and the outline of Dali ancient town. The upper station exit marks the southern starting point of the Yudai cloud trail. Walking north along this gentle mid-mountain plank path, you'll reach Cangshan grand canyon and Qingbi stream, where the water forms tiered emerald-green pools in the canyon. Further north leads to Qilongnv pool. Compared to the other two cable cars, this route allows access to Cangshan's mid-mountain area without strenuous climbing, making it suitable for travelers with average fitness who want to enjoy valley scenery comfortably. Before or after the ascent, you can conveniently visit Gantong temple and Jizhao nunnery at the mountain base. Note that Cangshan's weather changes frequently, with windy and cooler conditions at mid-mountain, so bringing a jacket is recommended.Dali City · 20.1km from Yangbi

Dali Ancient City

9.7k reviews
Dali Ancient City is nestled against the Cangshan Mountain and faces the Erhai Lake. This area was once the capital of the Nanzhao Kingdom and the Dali Kingdom. The preserved city layout mainly inherits from the reconstruction of the Dali Prefecture during the Ming Dynasty. Bai ethnic courtyards with white walls and blue tiles spread out along the chessboard-like streets. Locals spend their leisure time gardening, basking in the sun, and chatting, creating a slow-paced lifestyle that distinguishes this ancient city from many imitation historic districts. You can start your exploration from the south gate tower during the day, where the characters "Dali" on the wall serve as a popular photo backdrop. Climbing the tower offers a panoramic view of dark-tiled rooftops and distant Cangshan Mountain. Fuxing Road, extending north from the south gate, is the ancient town's central pedestrian street, lined with shops in Ming and Qing styles displaying marble carvings, tie-dye fabrics, silverware, and ethnic costumes. Wuhua Tower at the intersection, originally built during the Nanzhao period and rebuilt several times, remains a landmark of the town. Nearby, the Honglongjing area features clear streams flowing along the streets, making it a pleasant spot to rest when tired. The Renmin Road area is packed with snack stalls, fruit vendors, and handicraft shops, where you can sample local flavors like grilled rushan cheese, cold chicken rice noodles, and Xizhou baba. As night falls, another scene unfolds. Bars and cafés along Foreigner Street (originally Huguo Road) and Renmin Road light up one after another, with live music drifting from the shops to the streets. The town seamlessly transitions from daytime leisure to nighttime vibrancy within the same ancient city.Dali City · 20.8km from Yangbi

Shimenguan is located on the riverside behind Dali Cangshan. There are two hundreds of meters of cliff gorges, shaped like two huge stone gates. The clear stream waterfall rushes out of it and is a magical landscape. Amazingly, there is a large cliff painting in the back mountain of Songlin Village, with more than 200 pictures of animals and figures. It has been identified as a work of the Bronze Age and has been named as “Cang Cangshan Cliff Painting”, which provides solid information for the study of society, ethnicity, religion, art, production and life two or three thousand years ago, and has become a major attraction for people to watch and visit. landscape.Yangbi · 8.9km from downtown

As the glass dome of the double-decker bus glides through the morning light over Shuanghe Bridge, this dynamic journey around Erhai Lake quietly begins. Unlike the limitations of stationary viewpoints, this moving theater traversing lakes and mountains connects the daily rhythms of Bai ethnic villages, the migratory paths of wetland birds, and the ever-changing clouds over Cangshan Mountain's nineteen peaks along its 129-kilometer lakeside route. In the early morning when docking at Longkan Pier, opening the car window lets you catch the mist from fishermen casting their nets. As you reach the Caicun section, the car radio volume lowers—now the left side...CangshanJade-like clouds wreathe the mountain peaks, while the morning sailing boats on the right side of the lake carve shimmering ripples across the water. The half-hour stop at Zhoucheng Station allows just enough time to tie two indigo knots at the tie-dye workshop and watch Bai women transform plain cotton into flowing ripples of Erhai Lake. Noon dockingXizhou Ancient TownThe moment the door opens, the aroma of sun-baked wheat fields greets you. Around the corner, a cozy cottage always serves freshly kneaded rose-flavored milk fans, perfectly paired with tamarind juice chilled in the car fridge—an ideal respite from the midday heat. In the afternoon as you pass the Haidong cliff section, we recommend moving to the open-air upper deck. Let the salty breeze lift your clothes while you gaze across at the opposite shore.Shuanglang TownGradually developing into silhouettes against the backlight. As the sun sinks toward Xiaoputuo Island, the onboard guide softly reminds passengers: "To the right ahead, purple swamphens are floating home to roost." When the bus returns to the ancient town at dusk, the onboard screen replays snapshots from the day—perhaps a rainbow perfectly framed by a window, or an ancient tree leaning toward the lake at Haise Ecological Park. These fleeting moments, captured in motion, become the Dali Erhai Lake Tour Bus's living photo album for travelers.Dali City · 21.6km from Yangbi

Erhai Lake

Erhai Lake lies quietly at the foot of the Cangshan Mountains and east of Dali Ancient Town, serving as Yunnan's second-largest plateau freshwater lake after Dianchi Lake. Stretching narrowly over 40 km from north to south, its silhouette resembles both a human ear and a crescent moon. The Bai people traditionally call large lakes "seas," and with its vast expanse and sea-like waves when winds rise, it earned this romantic name. The nineteen peaks of Cangshan stand like a screen to the west, reflecting the lake's shimmering waters—a scenery long praised as "silver Cangshan and jade Erhai." This is also the setting for the "Erhai moon," one of Dali's famed "wind, flower, snow, and moon" four scenic wonders. The classic way to explore Erhai Lake is riding or hiking along the lakeside ecological corridor, where you can stop anytime along the 100 km shoreline: Longkan Dock on the western shore features boardwalks extending into the water and rows of dawn redwoods, making it a popular sunrise spot. Further north, Panxi S-bend's waterfront trail curves gracefully along the lake, with a solitary tree in the water and pastoral shores serving as iconic photo backdrops. Taking a cruise offers distant views of Little Putuo Island and a chance to visit Nanzhao Folk Island, often accompanied by Bai ethnic tea ceremonies and dances. Jinsuo Island in the southern lake has been home to Bai fishermen for generations, preserving both village charm and Benzhu faith traditions. During the summer Torch Festival, lakeside villagers toss pine resin powder, creating fiery sparks, while the legend-linked Shuahai Festival—honoring Lady Bojie and Duan Chicheng's serpent-slaying tale—keeps Bai bravery alive by the lakeshore. To slow down, head to Shuanglang Ancient Town by the lake and pick a waterfront café to spend half a day. At dawn, wait for the sunrise on the western shore; in the evening, watch the sunset paint the Cangshan Mountains golden-red from the eastern shore—riding along the lakeshore, cruising back to gaze at the mountains from the lake center, or simply sitting by the water—these experiences perfectly piece together different facets of Erhai Lake.Dali City · 30.6km from Yangbi

The weather down the mountain was actually quite nice, a bit overcast but the temperature was alright. As the cable car ascended higher and higher, the entire Dali city and Erhai Lake slowly came into view below. That stretch of scenery was truly worthwhile; looking down through the cable car glass, I finally had a truly concrete feeling about "Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake" for the first time.

If you're in Dali, this is a must-do! It's not picky about the weather; a light drizzle or mist creates a very picturesque scene. It won't last long, and soon the sky will be clear with blue skies and white clouds. The cable car ride offers panoramic views of most of Erhai Lake. You'll even pass through layers of clouds. The scenery is beautiful and unique, definitely worth experiencing.

Overall, it was a good experience. The cable car was excellent value for money, offering a long ride and panoramic views of the entire Erhai Lake area. You could see the Cangshan Mountains nestled against the lake, with its long, narrow shoreline dotted with gradually turning golden wheat fields and dense clusters of Bai ethnic minority houses. The Cangshan Mountains are lush and verdant; without the cable car, the ascent would be extremely challenging. Walking along the Panyun Ancient Trail, the shady sections were plentiful, making it quite comfortable.

Dali Ancient City is definitely worth a visit. Entering from the South Gate, the ancient cobblestone streets exude a charming, old-world atmosphere. Backed by Cangshan Mountain, with distant views of rolling hills, it evokes the feeling of the ancient Nanzhao Kingdom. The ancient city's streets and alleys are crisscrossed, with Renmin Road and Yangren Street being particularly lively. You can find Bai ethnic snacks like roasted milk fan and crispy rice cakes on the street. Climbing Wuhua Tower offers a panoramic view of the entire ancient city's rooftops. The main street is lined with shops, making it quite commercialized. Souvenir shops abound, so be sure to compare prices before buying. It's recommended to avoid the crowds and explore the side alleys to experience the local atmosphere. Stroll around during the day, watch the sunset over the ancient city, and enjoy the enchanting ambiance when the city lights up at night. Overall, it's a great experience. I recommend allowing 2-3 hours to explore at a leisurely pace. A must-visit in Dali, perfect for a relaxing stroll and soaking in the city's laid-back lifestyle.

Definitely buy a 2-day or 3-day ticket, which includes a direct bus ticket from Dali to Lijiang. Buying a separate ticket costs 60 yuan. The package ticket is much cheaper than buying each leg of the journey individually. The mini-program is well-developed, responsive, and easy to use. Tickets for departures after 6 PM must be booked in advance, as those times are filled with tourists heading back.

Compared to ten years ago, tourist attractions are much less crowded now. While Dali Old Town, just a couple of kilometers away, is bustling with traffic, this place is just as crowded. It seems fewer and fewer people born after the 1980s enjoy watching this TV series, hence the lack of popularity. The performances are also mediocre; there seem to be many, but few are truly worthwhile. However, with fewer people, the scenery is still quite nice.

On my second trip to Dali, I stayed for three days. On the first day, I stayed at Erhai Park, facing north to enjoy the view of Erhai Lake. On the second day, I stayed at Shuanglang Ancient Town, facing west to see the Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake together. On the third day, I cycled from west to east along the Erhai Ecological Corridor to enjoy the view of Erhai Lake. I also went to Yunxiang Mountain Road for extreme mountain biking, Shuanglang, Xizhou Ancient Town, Dali Ancient City, etc. Every angle offered a different perspective of Erhai Lake. The scenery in Dali is truly beautiful.
