Yue Yang Tower

"Be the first to worry about the world's worries and the last to enjoy its pleasures"—this line from Fan Zhongyan's Northern Song dynasty essay "Yueyang Tower chronicle" made Yue Yang Tower by Dongting Lake a household name. The main tower, Yueyang Tower, is said to have evolved from a naval review tower built by Lu Su of Eastern Wu during the Three Kingdoms period. Alongside Yellow Crane Tower in Hubei and Tengwang Pavilion in Jiangxi, it is hailed as one of the three great towers of southern China. Poets like Li Bai, Du Fu, Meng Haoran, and Bai Juyi once climbed it to compose verses. From the top floor, leaning on the railings, you can take in the vast expanse of Dongting Lake stretching hundreds of miles, with Junshan Island visible across the waters—where timeless verses and the lake's beauty converge in this moment. The tower itself is an architectural treasure: its three-story, triple-eave structure is built entirely of wood with mortise-and-tenon joints—no iron nails used—and four golden nanmu pillars run straight from the ground to the rooftop. The helmet-shaped roof, called "helmet crown," is supported by layered ruyi bracket sets, a rare design among surviving ancient towers in China. Inside, carved Qing-dynasty panels of "Yueyang Tower chronicle" are preserved—pause to admire them when ascending. The small attractions within the attraction each have their own highlights: near the gate, the "Five-dynasty towers" use bronze miniature models to recreate Yueyang Tower's different architectural styles from the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, showcasing a millennium of changes at a glance. On the lakeshore in front of the main tower, ancient iron artifacts resembling shackles and weighing several tons are displayed—their casting era and purpose remain debated, forming a long-standing historical mystery. Additionally, there are the Shuanggong Shrine commemorating Fan Zhongyan and Teng Zijing, the stele corridor engraved with poems about the tower from various dynasties, and the Xiaoqiao Tomb—said to belong to the wife of Three Kingdoms general Zhou Yu—waiting to be explored. If you wish to extend your itinerary, you may also take a boat tour of Dongting Lake and visit Junshan Island on the opposite shore. The nearby Bianhe Street, a cobblestone-paved antique-style street, is lined with local snack stalls and souvenir shops, making it convenient to explore along with the nearby Baling Square.China · Yueyang

Yulong River Rafting

Yulong River Rafting is the classic way to experience the Yulong River in Yangshuo. The Yulong River, a tributary of the Li River in Yangshuo, is often called the "Little Li River," with clear waters and a gentle flow year-round. Unlike the motorized rafts on the Li River, here the traditional method of poling bamboo rafts by hand is preserved. The rafts drift slowly downstream without the noise of engines, so quiet that you can hear the soft sound of the pole dipping into the water. Along the banks, karst peaks roll endlessly, while rice fields, villages, and waterwheels unfold one after another—a real-life scene of "a boat gliding on emerald waves, people wandering in a painting." During the rafting journey, you'll pass by ancient stone bridges like Yulong bridge and Fuli bridge built during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Fuli bridge features a single arch, with its reflection forming a perfect circle in the water—especially photogenic in morning mist. The Jiuxian village area retains old residences and ancient alleys. Multiple dams along the river create signature moments of excitement as rafts plunge over them, splashing water for brief seconds. The river offers two distinct sections: The upper section from Jinlong bridge to Jiuxian has more dams and pristine pastoral scenery, while the lower section starting from Jima and Shui'edi docks is closer to Ten-mile gallery, conveniently connecting with nearby attractions. Visitors can choose either half or full routes based on time and energy. When riding bamboo rafts through dams, clothes may easily get splashed, so remember to waterproof your phone and other personal items; during holidays, rafts get crowded—if you want to take serene landscape photos, consider setting off early.China · Yangshuo

Ordinary travelers typically combine walking with cable cars to explore Golden Summit in one or two days, enjoying the sunrise and sea of clouds, which is much more relaxed. The trail at Golden Summit roughly forms a "P" shape. To the right of the entrance are two-level cable cars leading to the mountain top, while the left side includes attractions such as the Diaoma Zhuang in Jiangxi Wugong Mountain National Scenic Area,Hero slopeThe hiking trails of the attraction. The "three major experiences" itinerary is as follows: start at noon on the same day, hike up from the right side with the assistance of a cableway, stay overnight at the golden summit, watch the sunrise and sea of clouds early the next morning, then continue counterclockwise to return via the left hiking trail. On the way from the entrance to the lower cableway station, you'll pass Shigu temple and Wugong Mountain Cultural Park in Pingxiang Wugong Mountain National Scenic Area, where you can spend half an hour for a brief visit. Sitting on the cable car, you'll see steep peaks and cliffs with pristine secondary forests above, and lush bamboo groves and terraced fields below, offering delightful views. If hiking up, you'll encounter scenic spots like Jinxin bridge, Jinxin waterfall, and Muzi rock along the way. Both options have their merits. The Zijigong Temple next to the cable car station is also called "Zhong'an," where the Prince of Wugong Mountain is enshrined. After visiting Ziji palace, it's time to ascend to the summit. Yueyang Tower, one of the four great ancient towers of my country, stands majestically on the shore of Dongting Lake, inspiring awe in visitors throughout history. Unfortunately, when we arrived in the afternoon, it was raining, and by evening, visibility was poor, greatly diminishing the view.

I hiked from Shuiedi to Gongnong Bridge, a relatively short route that takes about 30-40 minutes. The scenery along the way was beautiful, with four drops. Luckily, I bought a disposable raincoat to cover my lower body, so my pants didn't get too wet, although my upper body and face were partially soaked.

This is a very well-developed scenic area with complete facilities. This time, we hiked up the mountain and took the shuttle bus down. The hike starts from Victory Archway; avoid the visitor center area where you catch the shuttle bus. The route is: Victory Archway → Huayan Lake → Martyrs' Shrine → Banshan Pavilion → Yehou Academy → Tiefo Temple → Nantianmen → Zhurong Peak. What I need to complain about is the poor planning and maintenance of the hiking routes. The signage is not clear enough, some sections can only be accessed via winding mountain roads, and the main hiking trail's halfway point through the rocky forest is poorly maintained. If you're going to charge admission, at least make sure the ancient hiking trails are properly maintained.

The experience of visiting Wugong Mountain was quite good. The hiking route was of moderate difficulty and not strenuous. The view from the summit was expansive, overlooking vast meadows. The breeze was pleasant and refreshing. There were also ample supply points along the way, so I didn't need to bring too much with me. It was a very relaxing trip.

If you're planning to visit this scenic area, you first need to consider your physical condition. If you struggle to even climb to the ticket gate, my advice is not to climb. Of course, if you're determined, you can manage, but you'll likely have to take a cable car down. I recommend going in the early morning, when tea is at its best. If you go in the afternoon or evening, you'll be exhausted and freezing at the top, and finding accommodation will be a real ordeal. Also, the sea of clouds is often invisible; the overall scenery is best appreciated by an NPC.
