The Wang Family Courtyard is 35 kilometers away from the ancient city of Pingyao. Built by the Jingsheng Wang family during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, its construction took over 300 years to complete. Among Shanxi's courtyards, Its scale and grandeur are absolutely second to none. People who have been to the Wang Family Courtyard would exclaim that it is virtually a city! It is precisely because of its majestic grandeur, as well as its architectural and cultural achievements, it has always had the reputation "the Wang family does not return to see courtyards".Lingshi · 29km from Xiaoyi

The Three Emperors Temple in Xiaoyi City, also known as the Shengzu Temple, is located in Jiajiazhuang Village in the west of Xiaoyi City. On June 10, 2004, the Shanxi Provincial People's Government announced that it was a provincial cultural relic protection unit. The founding date of the temple is unknown. It existed in the Yuan Dynasty. It was expanded and renovated to varying degrees during the reigns of Emperor Qianlong, Emperor Daoguang and the Republic of China. The existing Three Emperors Hall still retains the original structure of the Yuan Dynasty, and the rest were rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty. The existing buildings include the Temple of the Three Emperors, the Ear Hall, the Theatre of Gods and the Side Gate. The east side of the Side Gate has a Voucher archway (mountain gate) to enter the temple. The rest of the buildings have collapsed and are no longer in existence. In 2005, the Municipal Cultural Relics Bureau and the Shanxi Ancient Architecture Protection Institute, based on the idea of complete protection and overall maintenance, adopted some modern materials for repair and reinforcement and anti-corrosion and solidification treatment when necessary, and carried out protective restoration of the Temple of the Three Emperors, while ensuring the "original form, raw materials, original craftsmanship and original methods".Xiaoyi · 2.6km from downtown

Pingyao Ancient City is approx. 85 km from Taiyuan. The streets, shops, and residences within the ancient city still maintain their traditional layout and appearance, making it one of the best-preserved ancient cities in China. It is also the only ancient county town in China that has successfully been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an entire city. Pingyao was once the financial center of China during the late Qing Dynasty. Walking through this once-prosperous ancient city, you can feel the essence of Shanxi merchant culture everywhere. The ancient city has six gates in total, with the north gate near Pingyao bus station and the west gate nearPingyao train stationThe south gate and west gate are places with many travelers. Entering the ancient town does not require an admission ticket, but if you want to climb the city wall or visit attractions like the ticket number, you need to purchase a pass for the ancient town. The ancient town is not very large, and walking is enough to explore it all. If you prefer not to walk, you can also take electric bikes. The streets of the entire ancient city are laid out in the shape of the Chinese character "土" (earth). When visiting, you usually enter the city from the West Gate and walk along West Street to Rishengchang Draft Bank, known as the "ancestor of modern Chinese banking". Here you can not only learn about the development history of ancient banking, but also have the old manager in a long robe and mandarin jacket write a draft for you using the early draft method, which is particularly historical. Moving forward is the north-south spanningSouth street, it is the central axis of the ancient city. During the Ming and Qing dynasties,South streetControlling over half of the nation's financial institutions, it was hailed as the "Wall Street of China" in its heyday. Today, it remains a bustling area of the ancient city, known as the Ming-Qing Ancient Street. Most attractions in Pingyao Ancient City are concentrated here, centered around the landmark structure, the Ancient City Tower. Surrounding it are attractions like Xie Tong Qing ticket number (China Banking Museum) and Wei Tai Hou (Ticket number museumAttractions such as Baichuantong, China Escort Museum, Tongxinggong Escort, Weishengchang, China Rare Newspaper Exhibition Hall, and Tianjixiang are available, along with restaurants, musical instrument stores, cafes, and bars. After strolling along the street, you can dine here, buy some souvenirs, and then continue south for more sightseeing. At the Pingyao Ancient City's county government office on the south side of the ancient city, you can see a large number of ancient documents and torture instruments, with daily performances of court sessions; near the Shangdong Gate are the Pingyao Ancient City's Chenghuang Temple andConfucian templeIt is quite grand and meticulously built, with thriving incense offerings where you can burn joss sticks. The Pingyao Ancient City wall is also one of the highlights of the ancient city, being not only majestic but also remarkably well-preserved. Climbing the wall offers a panoramic view of the entire ancient city. Among the gates, the tower of the south gate (Yingxun Gate of Pingyao Ancient City wall) is exquisitely crafted, and this area is close to residential buildings, allowing visitors to observe the daily life of the locals. If time permits, you can walk around the ancient city along the wall to fully appreciate its charm, which takes about an hour. Watching the sunset from the wall in the evening presents a beautiful scene. Besides the ancient town itself, Pingyao has two other major attractions: Zhenguo Temple and Shuanglin Temple. Zhenguo Temple was built without a single nail, with all structures joined by interlocking wooden components. Shuanglin Temple houses over 10 halls containing exquisitely crafted painted sculptures dating from the Yuan to Ming dynasties. It is highly recommended to stay overnight in the ancient town to enjoy its night view. You can also rent a bicycle to explore the small alleys and experience the authentic Pingyao, where the local culture and customs or photography make excellent subjects. Especially during the Chinese New Year, Pingyao is full of festive atmosphere. The town features old courtyards converted into inns, which are usually affordable, with clean and tidy accommodations available for just a few dozen yuan. Additionally, Pingyao is renowned for its beef. In the late Qing Dynasty, Empress Dowager Cixi passed through Pingyao and was so fond of the local beef after tasting it that she designated it as a royal tribute. Shops bearing the name "Guanyun beef" can be seen everywhere in the ancient town, making it hard to distinguish authenticity, and prices are generally high. You may consider buying some outside the town to try or give as gifts to friends and relatives.Pingyao County · 36.4km from Xiaoyi

Jiexiu Houtu Temple is a Taoist temple located in the northwest corner of Jiexiu County. It is one of the key cultural relics protection units in Shanxi Province. Jiexiu Houtu Temple is a huge building complex with five courtyards and pavilions. In this building complex, there are shadow walls, mountain gates, crossing halls, east and west corridor rooms, Sanqing Building, Bell and Drum Tower, and the rear hall. The main building in the Houtu Temple is a building with a triple eaves cross Xieshan and a roof structure. On the top of the building, the dragon's kiss is towering; the lion decoration, the glazed pavilion, the lotus ridge tube, and the beast's head and horns reflect each other, forming a vivid and spectacular picture of glazed products. In the Houtu Temple, there are nearly a thousand painted sculptures on the hanging wall reflecting the content of Taoism. These statues, with extremely high shaping techniques, have reached a considerable artistic realm. These painted sculptures have vivid images, different postures, smooth clothing lines, plump images and natural expressions. They are rare masterpieces of painted sculpture art. According to the records of the golden statues in the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, these painted sculptures may be the works of the early Ming Dynasty.Jiexiu · 17.9km from Xiaoyi

Shuanglin Temple is an old temple listed on the World Heritage List along with Pingyao Ancient City Wall and Zhenguo Temple. The sculptures made completely of wood-tire clay in the temple are valuable, integrating the essence of Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties colorful lay sculptures. The Avalokitesvara of the Bodhisattva Temple is of high quality. She sat in front of the green background, and she was graceful and elegant, with a gentle and calm appearance. Each arm is rounded and plump, and the ratio to the body is just perfect. There is no feel of stiff, reaching the harmonious and perfect realm of sculptural art.Pingyao County · 31.4km from Xiaoyi

Located in Jiexiu City, Zoroastrian God Tower, also known as Xuanshen Tower and Yaoshen Tower, is a pavilion-style building that combines a gatehouse, a music tower and a street crossing tower. Zoroastrian God Tower was originally part of the Zoroastrian Temple, which was destroyed in the 11th year of Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty (1532). It was converted into the Sanjieyi Temple during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, and was rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty. The Zoroastrian God Tower was built in the 50th year of Qianlong (1786).The front of the Zoroastrian building is in the shape of a "convex" character, with a total depth of 20 meters. The street-passing building protruding from the corridor is three bays wide and three bays deep. The wider part, the music building inside the temple, is five bays wide and four bays deep. There are corridors around it, and the space is spacious. The flat platform at the waist of the mountain gate is connected to the flat platform of the street-passing building, and the floor is laid on it, forming a music building for offering sacrifices to the gods in the temple. The temple's interior and exterior are both two-story, and together with the terrace and the double eaves on the upper floor, it is four stories high. The four pillars in the building directly support the upper beams, and the mountain gate and theater are stacked up and down. The roof is a cross-shaped hip roof, all covered with glazed ridge tiles. This high-rise ancient building has a harmonious proportion of depth and width, which gives it a very majestic and stable appearance. The Zoroastrianism Tower is a Zoroastrianism building. Its main doctrine is to worship the sun. It is also called "Zoroastrianism" and was born in ancient Persia. The Mingjiao in Jin Yong's novel "The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber" is the Chinese Zoroastrianism. In the Zoroastrianism Tower, you can see many decorative patterns that are not common in other temples, such as tigers, sheepdogs, sacred cows, elephants, etc. These are all sacred animals of Zoroastrianism. It is known as the "Four Famous Towers of Shanxi" together with the Guanque Tower in Puzhou, the Feiyun Tower in Wanrong, and the Qiufeng Tower. It is also the only Zoroastrianism building preserved in China and even in the world.Jiexiu · 18.3km from Xiaoyi

The National Day holiday was indeed crowded, significantly reducing the value for money. The parking lot is about a 25-30 minute walk from the scenic area. During the holiday, there was no proper guidance for tourists on how to visit, resulting in crowds everywhere, with people rushing into buildings. I left after only a short time.

What makes it special is that it's rare to find a temple that worships all three emperors together. The stage inside has a glass panel, hence its name, the "Glass Stage." However, the ticket price is quite expensive, making it not very cost-effective.

Free admission. Most of the buildings date back to the Ming Dynasty, with some from the Yuan Dynasty. This is a massive Taoist architectural complex with resplendent glazed tile roofs. The integrated architectural style of the Sanqing Hall, stage, and offering hall is extremely rare. The conjoined temples of Lü Zu, Guan Yu, and the Earth God are unique in China. These features alone are enough to make a detailed visit worthwhile. It's a fantastic place for taking photos; five-star recommendation! Scenery: The buildings and glazed tile roofs are incredibly beautiful. Fun: A perfect spot for taking photos. Value for money: Extremely high.

The clay Buddha statues at Shuanglin Temple are the most breathtaking part of my experience so far. In many other places, I only see countless small, headless statues. Even the traces left by the densely packed small statues on the stone walls don't reveal the whole picture, and the feeling is more regret than awe. But at Shuanglin Temple, I was constantly moved by the superb skills, imagination, and aesthetic sense of the ancient artisans. The first statue I saw was the Guan Yu Temple. Looking up and around, seeing the complex story-telling images on the walls like a comic strip, I suddenly burst into tears. It was pure emotion; I realized that simple emotion without any negative feelings can bring tears. Later, in front of a Buddha statue, the guide said that people in ancient times would kneel in worship. He suggested I try squatting down to look at the statue. When I squatted down and looked up, the compassionate gaze truly made you believe that the Buddha was listening to the troubles of the people of that time. Beside the main statue were hundreds of small Bodhisattva statues, each one unique, their robes fluttering in the wind, set against a backdrop of mountains and rocks. Every face was so beautiful; my photos couldn't capture its essence.

Compared to the Wang Family Compound, it is indeed much inferior. It is an ancient castle without any special features, and the NPCs only start work at 2 pm, and there are not many NPCs. No wonder it is not very famous.

I specifically called the Culture and Tourism Bureau beforehand and was told it was open as usual, but when I arrived, I found I couldn't go in. There was a notice posted at the entrance stating that due to some peeling paint caused by summer rains, the building had been closed for repairs since November 4th. So I could only look at it from the outside!

Although this place is still some distance away from the main urban area, there are buses to get there, or you can choose other ways to get there like I did. The entire archway is still very shocking. When you walk in, you will feel your own insignificance and the greatness of the wisdom of the ancients. The person looking at the archway is an aunt, who is sometimes a little like a rocket compared to the people outside.
