Jingniang Lake

Jingniang Lake is a vast mountain reservoir with emerald-green waters, surrounded by the iconic crimson cliffs of the Taihang Mountains, creating a spectacular landscape. Visitors can enjoy boat tours on the lake or hike up the surrounding hills for panoramic views and photography. The lake is also the legendary setting of Emperor Taizu of Song's famous tale "Escorting Jingniang a Thousand Miles," where travelers can explore attractions themed around Jingniang and learn about this beautiful millennium-old legend. Jingniang Lake covers a vast area, primarily divided into the water recreation zone on the lake and the Zhenyi Island peninsula area located across from the attraction's main entrance. The water recreation zone focuses on boat tours to admire the surrounding scenery, while Zhenyi Island offers hiking trails and exploration of various attractions along the way. Visitors can enjoy combined land and water activities, with the full experience taking approximately 5–6 hours. The water tour area is a must-visit for most travelers at Jingniang Lake. Purchase a combo ticket that includes the attraction admission and cruise to enjoy a boat ride. The cruise goes east first and then west, circling the entire lake, with the journey lasting 2–3 hrs. The boat is equipped with a guide who provides commentary, helping visitors better understand the significance of Jingniang Lake's scenery and the historical tale of "Escorting Jingniang Over a Thousand Miles." From the cruise, you can admire numerous attractions such as Twin Rainbows Reflecting the Moon, One-Line Sky, Frog Rock, the site where Emperor Zhao Kuangyin inscribed a poem, Jingniang's Dressing Table, and the Plunging Pool. These spots mainly feature unique cliff rock formations and sites tied to the Jingniang legend. At One-Line Sky, visitors can disembark briefly to marvel at the spectacular rock formations from the shore. The cruise's final stop is at Siyou Valley Pier on Zhenyi Island (across the lake from the attraction's main entrance), where your island exploration begins. If you prefer to visit Zhenyi Island without taking the cruise, you can also access it via the "Jingniang Lake Attraction - Magpie Bridge" cross-lake bridge from the main entrance. The island features a circular route: you can first ascend via the Mountain Village Path on the left, reach the summit of Songzu Peak (also known as Taizu Peak or Prince Mountain), then descend via the Red Leaf Ridge trail. The entire walking route takes approximately 3–4 hours. For convenience, shuttle buses are available to shorten part of the journey, and a cable car can save about 1 hour of hiking time. Zhenyi Island is densely forested with a tranquil atmosphere. Scattered across the mountains are numerous attractions including the Black Pine Forest, Flower-Fruit Mountain, Vine-Entwined Trees, Jingniang Lake Scenic Area - Cloud Temple, Songzu Peak, Red Leaf Ridge, Peach Blossom Valley, and Jingniang Lake Scenic Area - Jingniang Shrine. Visitors can enjoy both natural landscapes of mountains, waters and trees, as well as temples for blessings, plus memorial halls and statues dedicated to Jingniang. Highlights not to be missed include the murmuring Fengbiyan Waterfall, the brilliant fall colors of Red Leaf Ridge, and the breathtaking panoramic view of the lake between high gorges from Songzu Peak. After visiting Zhenyi Island, you can either walk back to the attraction entrance via Jingniang Lake's Magpie Bridge or take the thrilling cross-lake zip line for an exciting experience.

There are about 150 mu of flat land on Baiyun Mountain. It is said that Mu Guiying trained soldiers here. There are the remains of Bixia Yuanjun Temple of Ming Dynasty on the mountain. This has been included in the third step of the "Ancient Village Customs" development plan and is being prepared. At the foot of the mountain, Panlongtan, Banyue Bridge, Yunzhi Peak, Ziguang Rock, Sanqing Temple, Tianchi and other scenic spots have been built, and a Yulong plank road about 5 li long has been built. When playing here, people can directly feel "springs flowing on rocks, wind blowing in pines, and people swimming in paintings". The geological structure of Shiliugou belongs to the barrier rock geological structure. The ditch is ten li deep. There are about sixteen gullies of different sizes on both sides of the deep ditch. The locals call this place "Shiliugou". There is a book storage cave at the entrance of Shiliugou, a fairy temple next to the cave, a cave for cultivating Taoism behind the ditch, and Baiyun Mountain with an altitude of more than 1,300 meters at the bottom of the ditch. A Bixia Yuanjun Temple was built on the mountain in the Ming Dynasty. The construction of the Shiliugou Attraction took eight years. Five major Attraction including 86 scenic spots were built in three steps. The first is the Shanquan People's Attraction. The Attraction has eight stone buildings and stone houses with an area of about 5,000 square meters. It uses a stream of mountain spring water to create a multifunctional service Attraction integrating food, accommodation, entertainment, fishing, bathing, travel and shopping. At present, there are more than 200 beds, which can accommodate thousands of people for Dining. The second is the Xiangu Temple Attraction. There are scenic spots such as the Book Cave, Shanshen Rock, Lotus Peak, Shuangshou Mountain, Guiling Lake, Shuangfo Mountain, Lvxian Rock, Bulao Spring, and Xianchi, forming a natural scenery tour integrating lakes, pools, springs, caves, rocks, and peaks.

I bought a package ticket for 210 yuan for the painless mountain climb. A special shout-out to the toboggan ride downhill – the experience was amazing! The park provides special pants with rubber dots on the buttocks for added grip, and the gloves are also safety gloves with rubber dots. If you feel it's going too fast while sliding, sit up straight and brace yourself with your hands to slow down; if you really can't stop, just push off with your feet against the glass on either side – it slows you down instantly, giving you a great sense of security.

Qibugou Scenic Area is a hidden gem in the Taihang Mountains. Its 95% forest coverage makes it a natural oxygen bar. Tianjing Lake reflects the mountains, Baipu Gorge gurgles, and the suspended plank road leads to a breathtaking panoramic view. Buddhist ruins and revolutionary sites add to the cultural experience. With skiing in winter and amusement parks in summer, it's a destination for all types of travelers. While some facilities require occasional maintenance, the overall experience is excellent and highly recommended.

Highly recommended! The experience is excellent, the scenery is beautiful, and prices at the scenic area are reasonable. The downsides are that the cable car was out for maintenance and upgrades when I visited; it would be better if the sightseeing bus route were longer, perhaps dropping you off at the bottom of the slide. I suggest spending at least six or seven hours there, ideally a full day to visit this one attraction.

Having witnessed the grandeur of the Yungang Grottoes, the magnificence of the Longmen Grottoes, and the desolate beauty of Dunhuang, one might be unaware that hidden deep within Gushan Mountain in Handan lies the remnant of the Northern Qi royal grottoes. Lacking the scale of top-tier grottoes and the clamor of throngs of tourists, these cliffside ruins of Buddha statues once served as a sacred Buddhist site for the Northern Qi imperial family. They represent a precious transitional chapter in Chinese grotto art, connecting the elegant and refined styles of the late Northern Wei Dynasty to the plump and graceful styles of the Sui and Tang Dynasties. The "Cao Yi Chu Shui" style of the Northern Qi is a crucial link between these two major grotto art styles. Among them, the Great Buddha Cave, Sakyamuni Cave, and Sutra Carving Cave are the core essence of the entire grotto complex, each cave showcasing the ultimate craftsmanship of the Northern Qi artisans. The Great Buddha Cave—the largest and most prestigious cave—is said to contain the tomb of Gao Huan, the founder of the Northern Qi Dynasty. The over three-meter-tall seated statue of Sakyamuni sits upright, eyes half-closed, corners slightly upturned, a slight smile playing on its lips. The halo behind the Buddha features flame patterns and seven intertwined fire dragons, the blue still vibrant under spotlights. The renowned historian Fan Wenlan once said this cave "can rival the Longmen and Yungang Grottoes," highlighting its high artistic value. Sakyamuni Cave—Compared to the grandeur of the Great Buddha Cave, the Buddha statues here have softer lines and a more serene expression. Two highlights: 1. The imitation wood-structure carvings at the cave entrance are densely covered with flame patterns, intertwined vine patterns, honeysuckle patterns, etc., almost overwhelmingly ornate. This extreme layering of architecture, sculpture, and decorative patterns is considered by scholars to be a typical example of the "Xiangtang style." 2. The robes of the attendant bodhisattvas on both sides cling tightly to their bodies, thin and flowing, exhibiting the typical "Cao Yi Chu Shui" (詠衣出水) texture. Scripture Cave—A unique treasure of the North Xiangtangshan Grottoes. Tang Yong, the Duke of Jinchang of the Northern Qi Dynasty, spent four years carving each character of four Buddhist scriptures, including the Vimalakirti Sutra, into stone. Standing outside the cave, I imagined someone 1,500 years ago using a chisel to transfer the characters from paper to stone. Stone outlives paper, but despite a thousand years of wind and rain erosion, some characters remain clearly legible, while others have become one with the stone. I suddenly remembered someone saying: A dynasty that only lasted twenty-eight years carved a mountain, leaving people 1,500 years later to climb hundreds of steps to the top, standing speechless before the stone. No matter how you look at it, this is a fair trade.

Walking into Chaoyanggou, it feels like stepping into a poetic paradise. This is the prototype of the modern opera "Chaoyanggou" and the hometown of the famous playwright Yang Lanchun. It exudes a strong cultural atmosphere everywhere. The scenic area is beautiful with clear water and pleasant scenery. Walking along the winding mountain road, the first thing that comes into view is Yang Lanchun's former residence. The quaint stone house and simple furnishings make people seem to see the scene of the playwright's creation. Continuing forward, the former residences of characters in the play such as Shuanbao and Yinhuan also appear in front of you one by one. Each place retains its original style, as if telling stories of the past. In addition to the cultural landscape, the natural scenery is also intoxicating. Chaoyanggou is surrounded by mountains on three sides, with peaks and ridges, and a very high vegetation coverage rate. It is a natural "big oxygen bar". Strolling in the scenic area, breathing the fresh air, listening to the birds singing, and watching the gurgling stream, people forget the hustle and bustle of the world. The most memorable thing is climbing the Hundred-Step Sky Ladder. Looking up, the peaks on both sides reach the sky, and the cliffs fall straight down, which makes people marvel at the uncanny workmanship of nature. Standing on the top of the mountain, overlooking the entire scenic area, I feel relaxed and happy, and all my troubles disappear. Chaoyanggou is not only beautiful, but also hospitable. There is a "Farmhouse Resort" in the scenic area, where you can taste authentic farm meals, participate in various farming activities, and experience the fun of being a farmer. Here, I felt the charm of nature and the tranquility of the countryside. The trip to Chaoyanggou gave me a lot of memories.

There are two icicles in the scenic area. They haven't melted yet and are really beautiful. There were fewer people when I went there, so I could take pictures from any angle without worrying about others being in the frame. It takes about an hour or two to climb up and down the mountain. It's not particularly tiring, but some sections of the road should be repaired.

A highly recommended museum! Handan boasts a long history, and the museum has four floors. Except for the first floor, which has no exhibition halls, the second to fourth floors showcase history from human ancestors to modern times. It's advisable to check guided tour schedules in advance. The guides are not scripted, making the experience pleasant and engaging! The museum also offers a wide variety of cultural and creative products. If you get tired, there are benches in the corridors where you can rest and enjoy a coffee or milk tea. Unlike museums in other cities, the Handan City Museum closes at 9:00 PM, making it a popular spot for tourists and locals to stroll around!

Congtai Park is a landmark of Handan, a free comprehensive urban park that carries the history of the Zhao State and is a popular leisure destination for locals. Key attractions: 1. Wuling Congtai: The park's landmark, traditionally believed to be the platform where King Wuling of Zhao reviewed his troops during his "Hu-style riding and archery" ceremony. Climbing the platform offers panoramic views of the park's lake, and the ancient architecture makes for great photos. 2. Seven Sages Shrine: Dedicated to seven sages of the Zhao State (including Lian Po and Lin Xiangru), offering a glimpse into the historical stories of Zhao's generals and ministers. 3. Handan Stele Forest: Contains numerous ancient steles and stone inscriptions, including the large epitaph of He Hongjing, suitable for history enthusiasts. 4. The park features a lakeside promenade with boating opportunities; the west gate leads directly to the Handan Road historical district, perfect for exploring and dining, and the nighttime atmosphere is excellent.
