It is home to 62 mammal species, 265 bird species, 45 reptile species, and numerous rare insects. The core of Periyar National Park is the vast, clear artificial lake, Periyar Lake, an ideal spot for wildlife viewing. Bamboo rafting is available for close observation, allowing visitors to observe wild elephants frolicking and bathing in the water.
