San Felipe
No. 2 of Best Things to Do in Panama

San Felipe

4.8/5
59 reviews
San Felipe is the historic core of Panama City. In 1671, when the pirate Henry Morgan attacked, the original Panama City was nearly destroyed by fire. Survivors subsequently built a new walled city on a peninsula extending into the bay. The current layout of the neighborhood was established then, and it was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1997 as the Historic District of Panama. The charm of this neighborhood lies in the juxtaposition of the old and the new. Beside renovated colorful houses, cafes, and craft shops, there are still mottled, unrestored old buildings. On one side are colonial-era batteries, while on the other, the skyscrapers of Panama City stand in full view.Panama City · 18.6km from Taboga

Bridge of the Americas

Bridge of the Americas is an important landmark in Panama City, spanning the Panama Canal. The bridge is a steel arch structure that opened to traffic in 1962. It is over 1.6 km long, with its arch suspended high above the sea, forming a striking arc visible from afar in the Gulf of Panama. The Pan-American Highway connects the North and South American continents right here, and the bridge is thus considered a testament to the history of the Panama Canal and the development of modern transportation. Ocean-going cargo ships and cruise ships traversing the canal must slowly pass under the bridge. Watching the massive ships line up and pass through one by one under the bridge is a sight rarely seen elsewhere.Veracruz · 17.3km from Taboga

Amador Causeway

16 reviews
The Amador Causeway, located in the Ancon district of Panama City, is a nearly 6-kilometer-long coastal boulevard and a famous local tourist destination. The causeway was first built in 1913 using rocks excavated from the Culebra Cut during the construction of the Panama Canal. It was originally used as a fortification by the US military to protect the Pacific entrance of the canal. Today, the Amador Causeway has been transformed into one of Panama City's popular leisure and tourist destinations. There are spacious walking and cycling paths along the way, lined with palm trees, where visitors can enjoy the magnificent views of the Panama City skyline, the canal entrance, and the Bridge of the Americas. There are many restaurants, cafes and shops on both sides of the causeway, providing a wealth of food and shopping options. The Amador Causeway is not only a transportation hub, but also a combination of natural scenery, historical culture and modern infrastructure, making it one of Panama City's most vibrant seaside leisure areas.Ancon · 15.5km from Taboga

Located in the Lesser Town, the Church Of Saint Joseph is said to date back to 1673, and has been relocated, destroyed and remodeled. Its iconic golden altar is not actually all gold, but is made of gold leaf, paint-covered mahogany. Although the church has been somewhat dilapidated due to historical reasons, it does not affect its solemnity and attracts many devout believers.Panama City · 18.4km from Taboga

Taboga Island, also known as San Pedro Island, is located near the Gulf of Panama. The island has excellent natural conditions such as beautiful beaches, clear waters and soft sand, which are the habitats of wild animals such as seabirds, anteaters, hares, sloths, poison dart frogs and so on. Plants include hibiscus, jasmine, oleander, pineapple, orchid and some ferns, and there are many species, so Taboga Island is also called "Flower Island". What travellers say about Taboga

Obviously a must visit if you're in the city. This is the older part of the city and its historical center. It features old colonial houses, albeit many are being restored, so there is a slight gentrification aspect to the district. Nevertheless, walking through the streets lined with pastel colored houses is gorgeous. You could easily spend a morning or afternoon strolling through the districts various streets, while resting in the many open spaces when you're tired. Also a nice place to grab a bit to eat!

The Bridge of the Americas, spanning the Panama Canal entrance across the Pacific Ocean, is the pride of Panama. Designed and built by Americans in 1962 at a cost of $20 million, it was the only bridge connecting North and South America until the completion of the Centennial Bridge, the second bridge across the canal, in 2004. The bridge is 1,653 meters long, its steel frame arching like a dragon majestically guarding the canal. Cars can cross the canal in just a few minutes. At night, the Bridge of the Americas is even more magnificent and breathtaking. Of course, compared to bridges in China, it pales in comparison, but its geographical location makes it exceptionally famous.

This is also a scenic avenue, and a good place to enjoy the scenery along the seaside. The entire avenue extends to a distance from the seaside, and the color is also quite good. [Scenery] There are several good scenery here

This church is from the colonial period and it has a gilded altar. It is an example of the Spanish influence in the American colonies. Walking around the old Panama City is a wonderful experience.
