Enshi Grand Canyon National 5A Scenic Area and National Geopark is a world-renowned "natural museum" of composite karst landforms with "ground fissures, cenotes and rock pillars" coexisting at the same time. Its ecological environment is unique, and its natural scenery is primitive and simple, with a gallery of ten thousand meters of cliffs, a thousand-foot waterfall, hundreds of unique peaks, and ten miles of deep ravines. Yunlong Ground Fissure is called "the beautiful scar of the earth"; "One Incense Stick" was rated as one of the 40 famous scenic spots in China by foreign media. Yunlong ground seam Yunlong Ground Fissure Scenic Area covers an area of 11.3 square kilometers and has an altitude of 600-800 meters. The main landforms in the scenic area include ground fissures, waterfalls, deep pools, karst caves, underground rivers, pictographic stones, and geological profiles. Yunlong Ground Fissure is zigzag-shaped in plane, extending nearly north-south, with a total length of 3.6 kilometers, an average depth of 75 meters, and an average width of 15 meters. The river valley is deep and the bank is steep. It is known as the "ten-mile and hundred-foot cliff". It is the main sightseeing area of Yunlong Ground Fissure Scenic Area. The two walls of Yunlong Ground Fissure are steep and nearly parallel, and the width is basically the same from top to bottom. The cross section is "U"-shaped, which is extremely rare and unique. A stick of incense Karst stone pillars. A stick of incense is a landmark of the Enshi Grand Canyon and a very rare landscape among similar karst landforms. A stick of incense is 150 meters high, with a diameter of 6 meters at the bottom and a minimum diameter of only 4 meters. Its rock type is Triassic limestone. Because the strata here are horizontal, and the rock has a high compressive strength (800 kg/cm3), and there is no tilt or slip, it cannot be moved by the wind or knocked down by the rain. It has stood proudly among the peaks for tens of millions of years, guarding this mysterious land, which is rare. Cliff plank road The Cliff Plank Road, also known as Buyuntian Plank Road and Cliff Corridor, was built in August 2006 and took 1 year and 8 months to complete. The plank road is located on the mountainside of the vertical cliff on the east side of the mountain, with an altitude of about 1,700 meters, a total length of 488 meters, a height difference of 300 meters, and 118 stone steps. It is integrated with the mountain cliffs. Because the plank road is built on the cliff, some people call it the Cliff Corridor, or the "Cliff Plank Road". The project is a combination of the manufacturing technology of the ancient Bashu plank road with modern reinforced concrete building materials and advanced construction technology. It is scientific, safe, and magnificent. Welcome Song The Welcoming Pine, which is estimated to be nearly a thousand years old, grows proudly on the cliff, as if opening its arms to welcome tourists from all over the world.China · Enshi City

Jingzhou Ancient City

Yu the Great divided the land into nine regions, marking the beginning of Jingzhou. Jingzhou Ancient City, exceptionally well-preserved, is among China's first 24 nationally recognized historical and cultural cities. It stands as the largest and most intact ancient city in southern China. Jingzhou Ancient City is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction, featuring well-preserved ancient city walls that are designated as a key cultural relic under state protection. With a history dating back over 2,800 years, Jingzhou's city walls represent China's longest continuously standing ancient fortifications (over 1,800 years) spanning the most dynasties (15). These remarkable walls evolved from earthen structures to primarily brick construction with supplementary rammed earth sections. The existing city walls were rebuilt in the third year of the Shunzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1646 AD) on the Ming Dynasty foundation, constructed with glutinous rice-lime mortar for joint filling and featuring an integrated structure of brick and earthen walls for mutual support. Jingzhou Ancient City features an irregular oval-shaped wall, stretching 3.75 km east-west and 1.2 km north-south, covering an area of 4.5 sq km with a perimeter of 11.28 km. The wall averages 8.83m in height, with 4,567 battlements, 26 artillery platforms, and 5 troop-hiding tunnels. The historic site boasts 6 ancient gates and 2 gate towers (Binyang Tower at East Gate and Chaozong Tower at Great North Gate). The city is structured in three layers: an outer moat, a middle brick wall, and an inner earthen wall. The moat spans approx. 13,000m, with a width of 30–250m and an average depth of 4m, connecting to Taihu Lake in the west and the Yangtze River in the east while linking to the ancient canal. Built during the Ming Dynasty with stone foundations and brick walls reinforced by sticky rice-lime mortar to prevent subsidence and flooding, the wall's defensive system—including barbicans, watchtowers, barracks, artillery platforms, hidden tunnels, and double gates—made it nearly impregnable, earning its reputation as "Ironclad Jingzhou." Jingzhou Ancient City Night Tour - Jingzhou Ancient City Light Show The light show at Jingzhou Ancient City's East Gate uses flowing water as its stage, ancient walls as its screen, and lights as its medium to showcase the city's unique brand and cultural essence. Under the glow of lights, iconic landmarks like the ancient city walls, Binyang Tower, Golden Phoenix Soaring, Nine Dragon Pillars, and Qu Yuan Statue come alive in radiant splendor. Divided into four chapters - Heaven, Earth, Humanity, and Harmony - each scene tells a story of Jingzhou's cultural heritage and tourism highlights. Through a perfect blend of sound, light, and technology, accompanied by nighttime boat tours, this spectacular show opens a new chapter in the ancient city's night tourism experience. Painted pleasure boat cruise Board the Jingzhou cruise boat to explore the ancient moat and scenic riverside views of Jingzhou Ancient City. The moat was ingeniously created by connecting natural lakes, featuring expansive waters and winding banks that preserve the original lakes' natural beauty. Lush greenery and thriving vegetation along the shores highlight the charm of Hubei's water towns. During the cruise, you'll enjoy sights such as the Jingzhou ancient city walls, the Binyang Tower at Dadong Gate, the Nine Dragons Bridge in Jingzhou Ancient City, the Golden Phoenix city emblem, the Moonlight Bridge, the Qu Yuan statue, the wetland park—Moonlight Park, and Xiaobei Gate. City Loop Travel Services Experience the city tour service that circles the ancient city, covering approx. 13 km. This immersive journey through Jingzhou Ancient City allows you to explore its history, culture, and traditions from multiple perspectives—both inside and outside the walls. Along the way, admire the natural beauty of the moat and touch the weathered grandeur of Jingzhou's ancient walls, bearing witness to a thousand years of history. City sightseeing route: Starting at Binyang Tower (first stop) > Moonlight Bridge > Yuan'an Gate (Small North Gate) > New North Gate > Gongji Gate (Great North Gate) > Anlan Gate (West Gate) > New South Gate > Nanji Gate (Old South Gate) > Guandi Temple > Gong'an Gate (last stop). Yangtze River

The Yangtze River flows through Yichang, located at the junction of the upper and middle reaches, and serves as the starting point of the Yangtze River Three Gorges. The river surface is wide and calm, with layered green mountains on both banks, and the city is built along the river, creating a landscape where the mountains, water, and city complement each other. From the south bank, the urban area on the north bank stretches along the river, with bridges spanning across, offering a wide view. A representative view here is the canyon landscape, with towering cliffs on both banks and the river flowing through the canyon. When passing by boat, you can experience the narrowness and grandeur of the canyon up close. When the tour boat passes through the ship lock, the vessel rises and falls slowly with the water level in the lock chamber, which is a unique experience. There are also places along the river suitable for walking and viewing. The riverside promenade extends along the north bank, shaded by trees, making it a great spot for viewing the river up close, taking photos, and strolling. The high ground on the south bank offers a panoramic view of the city's river scenery, and at sunset, the river reflects the setting sun, creating a delightful view.Yichang · 70.3km from Songzi

Yangtze River Three Gorges

The Yangtze River Three Gorges is a grand canyon formed by the Yangtze cutting through the Wushan Mountains. It stretches nearly 200 km from White Emperor City in Fengjie, Chongqing, in the west to Nanjin Pass in Yichang, Hubei, in the east, connecting three gorges—Qutang, Wuxia, and Xiling—from west to east. This stretch of river has served as a vital waterway between Ba and Chu since ancient times. Li Bai's verse "Departing at dawn from White Emperor City veiled in colorful clouds" depicts the eastbound journey from the gorge entrance, while Du Fu left his famous line "The endless Yangtze rolls on and on" in Fengjie. Each gorge has distinct characteristics, often summarized as "majestic Qutang, graceful Wuxia, and perilous Xiling." Qutang Gorge spans only about 8 km but is renowned for its sheer cliffs. At Kuimen, its entrance, the river abruptly narrows to less than 100 m between knife-cut bluffs—a scene featured on the back of China's fifth series CNY 10 banknote. Ancient plank road holes and Wind Box Gorge's hanging coffins remain visible on the cliffs. Wuxia Gorge extends over 40 km like a winding gallery, with the Twelve Peaks lining its banks. Goddess Peak stands elegantly photogenic in morning mist. Xiling Gorge was once notorious for rapids, but the Three Gorges Dam has transformed its upper reaches into a "high gorge with placid waters." Riverside landmarks like White Emperor City and Huangling Temple are worth visiting. Cruising is the best way to experience the gorges. Long-distance ships sail downstream, while short round-trip boats shuttle through key sections. Watching peaks drift by from the deck offers a more immersive perspective than shore viewing. Morning mist often creates ideal conditions for photographing Kuimen and Goddess Peak. Cliffside plank road relics and inscriptions may flash by during the cruise—keep an eye out to avoid missing them.Yichang · 79.5km from Songzi

White Emperor City Qutang Gorge Scenic Spot

4k reviews
White Emperor City Qutang Gorge Scenic Spot is located by the river in Fengjie County, Chongqing, at the western entrance of the Yangtze River's Three Gorges. It consists of two parts: White Emperor City and Qutang Gorge. A historic island city surrounded by water meets a majestic and precipitous gorge gateway, where natural landscapes, Three Kingdoms relics, and millennia of poetry converge. When cruising through the Three Gorges, the gorge's panoramic scroll often begins unfolding here. White Emperor City, originally named White Emperor City Qutang Gorge Scenic Spot, was built by Gongsun Shu in the late Western Han Dynasty as a fortified city, where he proclaimed himself the "White Emperor," a name that has endured to this day. During the Three Kingdoms period, Liu Bei retreated here after his failed eastern campaign and entrusted his son to Zhuge Liang on his deathbed. The colorful sculptures in the Entrusting the Orphan Hall at the White Emperor Temple recreate this historical episode. Interestingly, while the temple's name remains unchanged, it now enshrines Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang, who were honored during the Ming Dynasty. The Mingliang Hall, Wuhou Shrine, and Star-Gazing Pavilion are built along the mountainside, while the eastern and western stele forests display inscriptions from various dynasties, worth a slow-paced appreciation. The site is also renowned as the "City of Poetry": Li Bai, pardoned and returning east, penned the timeless line "Leaving at dawn the White Emperor crowned with cloud"; Du Fu, residing in Kuizhou for nearly two years, left behind over 400 poems; and Liu Yuxi composed "Bamboo Branch Songs" while serving as the governor of Kuizhou. After the Three Gorges Reservoir was filled, the rising river level turned White Emperor Mountain into an isolated island in the high gorge's flat lake, accessible only via a long covered bridge. The Qutang Gorge stretches approx. 8 km in total. Though not the longest among the Three Gorges, it is renowned for its majestic and precipitous scenery. The gorge entrance, called Kuimen or Qutang Pass, features the sheer cliffs of Chijia Mountain and Baiyan Mountain standing opposite each other, abruptly narrowing the river. Here, the Yangtze forces its way through the pass, which has served as the vital waterway to and from Sichuan since ancient times. It also appears on the back of the fifth series CNY 10 banknote. While sailing through the gorge, visitors can spot the hanging coffins at Wind Box Gorge high on the cliffs, the orderly arranged Meng Liang's Ladder holes on Baiyan Mountain's precipice, and numerous cliff inscriptions. When visiting, consider first walking across the covered bridge to the island to explore the Tuogu Hall, stele forest, and Star Observation Pavilion, then head to the Kuimen viewing platform behind Baidi Temple—directly facing Kuimen, it offers the same perspective as depicted on the back of the CNY 10 banknote. Matching a bill with the actual view for photos has become a classic activity. To truly experience the canyon's narrowness and the river's rush, take a boat through Qutang Gorge—looking back at the cliffs from the water is far more awe-inspiring than viewing from the shore.China · Fengjie County

Tribe of the Three Gorges is located on both banks of Dengying Gorge in the Xiling Gorge section of the Yangtze River, between the Three Gorges Dam and Gezhouba Dam. It consists of areas such as mountain dwellings, water dwellings, and riverside dwellings, presenting a concentrated display of the original ecological charm of the gorge. The visit combines boat tours and walking, and the ferry crossing the Yangtze River itself is part of the experience. The highlights of the mountain village are concentrated on the slope overlooking the river: the wooden stilt houses, built along the mountain terrain, are lower in the front and higher in the back with winding corridors, and the rooms inside restore the living scenes of the ancient inhabitants of the Gorge. In the Bawang Village and Bawang Palace, built to imitate ancient Ba people's mountain strongholds, visitors can watch folk songs and dances, listen to Tujia girls singing antiphonal songs, taste a bowl of bowl-smashing wine, and experience the ancient and mysterious Ba-Chu culture. Continuing up the mountain road, one can also see the towering "Stone Token" and the "Shadow-play Stone" standing on the cliff top. The outlines of these peculiar rocks resemble the Tang Monk and his disciples; when illuminated by the setting sun, they look like figures on a shadow-play screen, making them popular photo spots. You can hike up the mountain or take the cable car. The waterborne dwellings stand at the river bend where Longjin Stream meets the Yangtze, with ancient sailing boats braving the wind and fishermen casting nets, recreating the generations-old river life of fishing families who made boats their homes. Here, one can also hear the powerful and resonant boatmen's work songs. Longjin Stream, where the riverside dwellings are located, boasts emerald-green waters and serene beauty, earning it the nickname "Little Jiuzhai of Hubei." Local girls wash clothes on riverside rocks while singing folk songs, and black-canopied boats gently sway on the stream. The lively Tujia wedding customs performance before the stilt houses features amusing elements like bride snatching, wedding laments, and tossing the embroidered ball, often inviting travelers to play the groom's role. The scene of trackers pulling boats along the stream further unfolds, making the journey feel like stepping into a living scroll of river valley folk culture.Yichang · 90.9km from Songzi

Huanglong Cave is renowned for its lofty caverns, deep underground rivers, and dense stalagmites. The cave is adorned with various stalactites such as stone milk and stone pillars, which appear vibrant under the lighting. Particularly notable is the iconic attraction "Sea-fixing needle": Nearly 20 m tall, thick at both ends and thin in the middle, with the thinnest part measuring only approx. 10 cm in diameter. It is estimated to have grown for nearly 200,000 years and is still slowly 'growing taller'. The attraction once invested heavily in insuring it, demonstrating its rarity. After passing the ticket office of Huanglong Cave, there is still some distance before entering the cave. Besides the long corridor for queuing, there is also a spectacular group of interconnected waterwheels. This attraction fully utilizes the underground water resources of the cave, featuring waterwheels with various functions, shapes, and purposes, such as grinding flour and irrigation. With designs ranging from pagodas to mechanical types, the exquisite craftsmanship resembles a real-life "Mohist mechanical city," leaving visitors in awe. Huanglong Cave covers a vast area, stretching approx. 7 km in total length with a vertical height of over 100 m inside the cave. The entire cave features interconnected chambers and underground rivers. Travelers can admire a large quantity of stalactites in various forms such as stone milk, stone pillars, stalagmites, stone curtains, stone pianos, and stone flowers. Among them, the most distinctive is the iconic attraction inside the cave –Sea-fixing needle", thick at both ends and thin in the middle, is estimated to have grown for two hundred thousand years. The "land-and-water" sightseeing route in the cave is particularly fascinating. Travelers first explore on foot, then board a cruise at the dock by the underground river to admire the scenic views and spectacular stalagmites along the waterway. The cruise lasts about 15 mins. After disembarking, the walking tour continues, leading to a magical cave waterfall. The route is one-way, with the exit located near but separate from the entrance.China · Zhangjiajie

The Grand Canyon must have been beautiful, but unfortunately, we encountered a very foggy day, so we couldn't see much of the scenery from the mountain. The Yunlong Ground Fissure, which we visited in the afternoon, was unaffected by the fog and was quite spectacular. Even though we bought tickets for the cable car, elevator, and other amenities, we still almost broke our legs from all the walking, which will affect our itinerary for several days. I recommend that if you're not very confident in your hiking skills, you buy a combined ticket that includes the cable car, elevator, and escalator.

Jingzhou is a famous city from the Three Kingdoms period. My child was very interested in the city after hearing about the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, especially wanting to see Guan Yu. It is said that the Guan Yu Temple is the original site of Guan Yu's residence. The place inside is not big, but the incense is very strong. We even tried to use the Green Dragon Crescent Blade. We used all our strength but it didn't budge. It must weigh more than 82 jin (41 catties). It is a good place to bring children to learn about history.

Visited Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon back in May! The weather wasn’t the best that day as it was super misty, so we couldn’t fully enjoy the scenery, but we still had SO MUCH FUN with all the activities! 🎢 We went down the slides, tried the zipline and VR experience, and enjoyed the cool weather. Also got to see some really brave people bungee jumping, which was quite an experience to witness! 😂One thing to note though: the walk to the exit is RLLLLY loooooong 😭 It took us roughly an hour, and at least from what I could tell, there didn’t seem to be an easy way out. So be prepared for quite a bit of walking, especially if you’re already tired from all the activities!Overall, still a fun experience with plenty to do, even when the weather isn’t ideal. Just hope you get better visibility than we did! 🤞🏻

It's great in every way. The only starting point for the Three Gorges Summit hike is Baidi City, and the scenery is beautiful. Food and drinks on the mountain cost 10 yuan per serving. There are many steep uphill sections, and the hike is about 10 kilometers and takes about 6 hours. After the hike, there are local private cars available for 30 yuan per person to take you down the mountain from the high-speed rail station or other places.

Furong Town, a hidden gem nestled deep in the mountains of western Hunan, is a millennium-old haven of charm and tranquility, and a unique ancient town "hanging on a waterfall" in China. During the day, Furong Town is serene, magnificent, and rustic. The entire town is built against the mountainside, with layers of Tujia stilted houses cascading down the slope, their wooden buildings, black tiles, and upturned eaves blending seamlessly with the verdant cliffs.

Due to the rain, we changed our plans and visited Huanglong Cave instead. I had a very good experience; the cave is enormous, and the boat ride was enjoyable. Unfortunately, because I was accompanying an elderly person, we couldn't go further in and missed the largest stalagmite.
