Rhine Falls
No. 1 of Best Things to Do in Canton of Schaffhausen

Rhine Falls

6.5
4.7/5
154 reviews
Rhine Fallsis located on the upper Rhine River in northern Switzerland, straddling the border between the Canton of Schaffhausen and the Canton of Zurich, just a few km from the old town of Schaffhausen. It is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe, where the riverbed, approx. 150 m wide with a drop of approx. 23 m, plunges down. During the high-water season, hundreds of cubic meters of water crash down every second, and you can hear the thunderous roar before you even get close. This waterfall was formed during the last glacial period, approx. 14,000–17,000 years ago, carved by the erosion of the riverbed narrowed by hard, erosion-resistant limestone. The massive rock standing in the center of the waterfall is a remnant of the ancient river cliff. An iconic experience is to take a small boat to the massive rock in the center of the waterfall, dock, and climb the stone steps to the platform on top, where you can feel the mist on your face and hear the deafening roar just inches from the water curtain. The views from both banks are unique: Laufen Castle on the Zurich side sits high on the cliff, making it a classic spot for a panoramic view of the waterfall; the viewing platform on the Schaffhausen side is close to the water, perfect for capturing the spray of the water curtain at eye level. You can take a boat round-trip between the two banks, or walk across the pedestrian path next to the upstream railway bridge to visit the other side, capturing the scenery from different angles.Neuhausen am Rheinfall · 20.2km from Singen

468 reviews
Santa Maria delle Grazie is located in the west of Milan, on the south side of the Sforza Castle. This red Catholic building consists of a church and a Dominican monastery. It is famous for the fresco "The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci in the monastery's refectory. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. . The Last Supper "The Last Supper" was created by Leonardo da Vinci in the 15th century, using innovative and bold painting techniques combining oil and tempera, creating a unique perspective effect, but also easily eroded. On August 15, 1943, the church and the congregation were bombed by British and American aircraft, and most of the canteen of the congregation was destroyed, but the wall on which The Last Supper was located survived. Centuries later, 80 percent of the painting's colors had faded, and restoration work began in 1977 and continued for 22 years. At present, the number of visitors is strictly controlled, and the number of visitors cannot exceed 30 at a time. In addition to the "Last Supper", the church building itself is also worth seeing. The church was built under the auspices of Duke Sforzesco and was finally completed in 1490. It was once used as the tomb of the Sforzesco family. Later, when the French invaded, the cultural relics and treasures in the church were looted, but the exquisite dome and frescoes were still preserved. The sacristy is now the Dominican cultural center, and often holds some salons and art exhibitions.Italy · Milan

Bahnhofstrasse

4.8/5
445 reviews
Bahnhofstrasse is located on the west side of the Limmat, starting from Station Square in front of Zurich Main Station in the north and ending at Buerkliplatz on the shores of Lake Zurich in the south, with a total length of approx. 1.4 km. This street is actually quite young: it was only after Zurich demolished its old city walls and filled in the moat in the 1860s that this straight street was opened on the low-lying land formerly known as "Frog Ditch." Today, it is often compared to New York's Fifth Avenue and has long been ranked among the most expensive shopping streets in Europe, serving as a city landmark for Zurich. It also has a famous nickname—the "Wall Street of Switzerland." Zurich is an internationally renowned financial city, with banks and financial institutions clustered along the street; the headquarters of UBS Group (UBS) is located next to Paradeplatz along the way. Even more intriguing is the long-standing rumor that many banks store their gold reserves in underground vaults beneath the street. Switzerland has also long been one of the world's major hubs for gold trading, so it's no wonder some call it the "Golden Avenue." Thinking about the vaults that might be buried beneath your feet while strolling along is quite a fascinating experience.Zurich · 49.6km from Singen

Zurich Old Town

4.7/5
96 reviews
Zurich Old Town straddles both banks of the Limmat and serves as the city's historic core. Compared to the modern urban landscape of riverside banks and office buildings, it still retains the layout of a medieval town: winding cobblestone alleys, scattered old houses, guild halls, and street fountains. Standing on the riverbank, you can see the Old Town's three iconic churches at a glance—the twin-towered Grossmunster, St. Peter's Church, which features a clock face nearly 9m in diameter, and Fraumunster, famous for its Chagall stained-glass windows. Zurich Old Town is best explored on foot. Augustinergasse is lined with old houses featuring painted bay windows and vintage signs, making it one of the most recognizable alleys in the Old Town. For a panoramic view, head up to Lindenhof Hill; this former Roman castle site is now a vantage point for overlooking the Old Town's rooftops and the Limmat. Many old buildings have been converted into trendy restaurants, bars, and cafes, with bookstores and gift shops tucked away in the deep alleys. The Niederdorf area is a bustling shopping district by day, and after dark, its restaurants and bars light up, so it never feels repetitive even if you stroll from the afternoon well into the night.Zurich · 49.3km from Singen

Lake Como is a lake carved by glacial movement, covering an area of 146 square kilometers and shaped like an inverted Y. The lake reaches depths of over 400 m, making it one of the deepest lakes in Europe. Surrounded on three sides by thefoothills of the Alps, the shoreline is long and winding, and the mild microclimate regulated by the lake allows Mediterranean plants like olives and citrus to grow along the shores, creating a distinct transition from the alpine vegetation on the hillsides. For centuries, the scenery of Lake Como has attracted numerous artists. French novelist Flaubert, and composers Rossini, Verdi, and Bellini have all drawn inspiration here. The eastern shore also features hiking trails restored from ancient paths, where you can climb to enjoy a panoramic view of the confluence of the lake's two branches and take in the beautiful scenery.Italy · Menaggio

Lake Zurich

Lake Zurich is a glacial lake on the Swiss Plateau, formed by glacial erosion. It is shaped like a crescent moon and stretches nearly 30 km southeast from downtown Zurich. The lakeshore slopes gently, with vineyards and orchards spread out in layers on the gentle slopes. On clear days, standing by the lake and looking south, the outline of the Alps is clearly visible. The lakeside promenade is flat and easy to walk. Strolling, jogging, picnicking, and sunbathing are daily pastimes for locals. In summer, the lakeside swimming areas are popular, and jumping into the water for a few laps is a common way for residents in this area to cool off. There are year-round boat services, allowing you to travel from the pier at the city's lake outlet all the way to Rapperswil at the southeastern end, offering a different perspective of the gentle slopes and small towns on both banks. Swans and wild ducks are frequent visitors here, often swimming in groups to the shore and leisurely circling around visitors' feet.Stafa · 60.7km from Singen

This lesser-known attraction is worth a visit. The area isn't large, but it's incredibly popular. The view up close is quite breathtaking. Although I didn't get to climb to the national flag, being halfway up the mountain already gave me a real sense of its unstoppable, surging power. It's a bit chilly in autumn, so dress warmly and be sure to bring waterproof clothing.

Landmark Significance: As the city center of Milan, the square is an irregularly shaped polygon covering approximately 12,000 square meters. It was the coronation site of the first king after the unification of Italy (Napoleon was crowned here in 1805) and is now part of a World Heritage Site.

Bahnhofstrasse is Zurich's most famous shopping street, luxurious and full of vitality! It is full of top brand stores, exquisite cafes and century-old shops, which is very stylish to visit. The street is clean and elegant, with trams running through it, retro and modern. Although the prices are high, the window viewing and street photography are worth it! It is recommended to experience the exquisite life in Switzerland, remember to bring your wallet~
