Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

4.3/5
950 reviews
Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, located southwest of Bangkok, is a rare example of a market that still retains the traditional Thai floating market atmosphere. With over a century of history, it has been a filming location for many movies, most notably one of the James Bond films. Local residents still live in stilt houses built along the waterways of Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. Most vendors are husband-and-wife teams, conducting their trade year-round on the river. Boats carrying vegetables, fruits, and small goods weave through the narrow waterways of the canals, lined with lush tropical trees. On board, local women, wearing distinctive straw hats, loudly hawk their wares. During peak season, these small merchant boats and passenger boats create traffic jams on the canals, forming a lively scene. Most visitors to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market choose to tour the market by boat, experiencing the fun of shopping from above. Of course, strolling through the covered walkways on the banks offers another unique experience, with vendors selling fruit there as well. If you see food that you like from the vendors on the boat, you can ask them to come ashore.Damnoen Saduak · 24.5km from Sam Phran

Chao Phraya River

The Chao Phraya River is the customary name used by the Chinese community for the river known in Thai as "Chao Phraya." The term "Chao Phraya" originates from Thai, literally meaning "mother of waters," while its Thai name is often translated as "river of kings," both reflecting the river's significance in Thailand. It originates in the northern mountains of Thailand, flows south through the central plains, passes the ancient capital of Ayutthaya, and runs through the heart of Bangkok before emptying into the Gulf of Thailand. Including its upstream tributaries, it stretches over 1,000 km. Bangkok grew alongside this river, once crisscrossed by waterways and dubbed the "Venice of the East." Even today, the Chao Phraya River remains a vital waterway for local transportation and daily life. Taking a cruise is a classic way to explore the river. By day, the water bustles with public ferries, cargo boats, and crossings, resembling a watery highway for Bangkok residents, while traditional floating markets have mostly relocated to tributaries. Along the river, historic landmarks like the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun glide past, juxtaposed with modern malls like ICONSIAM across the water. A short ferry ride from Tha Tian Pier leads to Wat Arun on the opposite bank. At night, the river transforms as lights illuminate both shores, with Wat Arun's porcelain-clad spires shimmering softly. Sightseeing and dinner cruises set sail, offering a distinctly different atmosphere from the land-based experience. If timing allows, an evening cruise lets you witness both the sunset and the city lights, capturing two faces of the river in one trip. △Sparkling Chao Phraya River △Enchanting night view at Chao Phraya RiverBangkok · 41.8km from Sam Phran

Maeklong Railway Market is a traditional open-air market situated directly along an active railway. It extends along both sides of the tracks with densely packed stalls, primarily selling fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, seafood, meat, dried goods, and local daily food, serving both local residents and tourists from all over. A notable feature here is that trains pass directly between the stalls. When a train approaches, vendors quickly retract the awnings extending over the tracks and move goods away from the tracks. After the train slowly passes, they put the goods back, unfold the awnings, and continue their daily business. It is adjacent to Maeklong Railway Station, and you can browse most of the stalls by walking along the tracks.Mueang Samut Songkhram · 33.2km from Sam Phran

Cruise Through Culture: A Must-Visit at Damnoen Saduak Floating Market! If you're in Thailand, don’t miss the magical experience of Damnoen Saduak Floating Market! This vibrant market, set on winding canals, is like stepping into a living postcard. I booked my visit through Trip.com, and everything — from hotel pickup to boat ride — was seamless and hassle-free.Gliding through the waterways, I was surrounded by friendly vendors in wooden boats, selling exotic fruits, delicious Thai snacks, handmade crafts, and more. The aroma of sizzling food and the sight of colorful produce were unforgettable. I tried the mango sticky rice and fresh coconut ice cream — both were incredible! The early morning vibe, reflections on the water, and rich cultural feel make this a photographer’s dream. Damnoen Saduak is more than a market — it’s a slice of Thai heritage that you can see, taste, and feel.#TripWithTripdotcom #ThailandVibes #FloatingMarketAdventure

Overall, it was pretty good, the food was decent, and my parents were quite satisfied. The Unique isn't very big, but you can see the luxury of other larger ships while sitting on it. I think the price-performance ratio is quite good.

Beautiful large golden Buddha! Very glad we went. It was a 45 minutes drive from where we stayed. The kids really enjoyed feeding the large fish. There were so many of them. You may take a boat tour but just being there was a great experience as it is.

Maeklong Railway Market is one of Thailand's most unique markets, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys novel experiences. My first visit, I was captivated by the unique spectacle: vendors laid out their wares alongside the tracks, displaying a vibrant market scene of fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood. When the train whistled, the vendors quickly tucked away their awnings and merchandise, only to return to their original positions after the train passed. The entire process was fluid and orderly, a truly remarkable sight. This "train passing through the market" spectacle is rare, offering a glimpse into the local lifestyle while also being filled with surprises and fun.

Khaosan Road is one of the most lively backpacker gathering places in Bangkok, full of vitality and exotic culture. During the day, the streets are full of various cafes, restaurants and small commodity stalls, where you can find cheap Thai food, handicrafts and even tattoo shops. At night, neon lights are on, bars and nightclubs are blasting music, and street performers make the whole street lively. This place brings together tourists from all over the world, and you can feel the strong international atmosphere at any time. If you like nightlife, Khaosan Road is definitely a place you can't miss. However, the environment here is relatively noisy. Tourists who want to find a quiet accommodation can choose the surrounding blocks, which is convenient for feeling the bustle of Khaosan Road and enjoying a more comfortable rest environment.
