Grand-Place of Brussels

Grand-Place of Brussels

7.4
4.6/5
598 reviews
Grand-Place of Brussels is the urban heart of Brussels and was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1998. The square is rectangular, approx. 100 m long and nearly 70 m wide, and is paved with granite. Most of the surrounding buildings were built in the late 17th century and still preserve their original appearance, bringing together a variety of architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque, and Louis XIV. One of the striking buildings on the square is the Brussels Town Hall, a typical Gothic building that reached its current scale after multiple expansions and renovations. The top of its spire is decorated with a sculpture of Saint Michael slaying a demon. The building with spires opposite the Town Hall is known as the "King's House" and now houses the Brussels City Museum. The gilded bronze statue of Everard 't Serclaes in a corner of the square is also worth noting; it commemorates the Brussels folk hero Everard 't Serclaes and depicts the scene of his death. Other buildings surrounding the square mostly belonged to historical guilds, and the facade of each guild building is decorated with sculptures of figures revered by the guild or symbolic animals. During the day, you can savor the beauty of the architecture. After nightfall, when the lights come on, the murals and carvings on the buildings shine brilliantly under the illumination, making it a great place for night photography.Belgium · Brussels

Rheinauhafen District is a waterfront neighborhood transformed from an old freight port. The riverside promenade is lined with modern buildings, interspersed with cafes, galleries, and art spaces. The remnants of the port era and the newly built glass facades complement each other, showcasing a modern urban style. The district's core landmark consists of three high-rise buildings known as the "Crane Houses," standing approx. 60m tall, with an inverted L-shape that echoes the area's history as a freight terminal. Historical remnants, such as the Bayenturm tower dating back to the Middle Ages, are also preserved along the route. Looking north along the river, the silhouettes of the cathedral and the iron bridge are clearly visible, with classical spires and modern architecture framed together. At dusk, the sunset reflects on the river surface, and strolling along the path offers a panoramic view of the city on both banks, forming a waterfront view that blends industrial memories with a stylish atmosphere.Germany · Cologne

Manneken Pis is one of the symbols of Brussels. This bronze statue stands in a niche on a street corner in the old town, depicting a little boy with his hands on his hips, urinating into a basin. Its history dates back to the mid-15th century, and it was redesigned and cast by sculptor Duquesnoy in 1619. The statue currently standing in the original spot is a later replica, while the original is preserved in the City Museum near the Grand Place. It is only about 0.5m tall, much smaller than many tourists imagine, yet it is considered a symbol of Brussels along with the Atomium and the Grand Place, and is packed year-round with tourists holding cameras.Belgium · Brussels

Vallée de la Pétrusse

4.4/5
109 reviews
Vallée de la Pétrusse is also known asVallée de la Pétrusse, a rift about 100 m wide and about 60 m deep that runs across Luxembourg City, naturally separating the high ground of the old town from the new district by the train station. The gorge once served as Luxembourg City's natural barrier, and remnants of fortifications such as bastions, gun ports, and secret passages still remain between the cliffs. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1994. Today the gorge has returned to nature, with towering trees spreading layers of green shade and the Pétrusse stream quietly flowing along the valley floor. Stone steps from the plaza side lead all the way down to the valley floor, and along the shaded path you can look up to see the Pont Adolphe spanning the gorge and the arch of the old bridge. The path is gentle, suitable for walking, jogging, and cycling. If you only want to view it from a distance, stand on the plaza or on the bridge spanning the gorge and the canyon's greenery and the old town roofs will appear in the same view. On misty mornings, the valley floor is shrouded in fog, which further accentuates the canyon's depth. In summer, you can also take the open-air sightseeing train Pétrusse express and, with commentary, view the canyon's military remains and natural scenery.Luxembourg City · 84.3km from Reil

Rhine River

Rhine Riveroriginates in the Swiss Alps and flows through the heart of Western Europe, spanning over 1,200 km.Since the 19th-century Romantic era, this area has become a romantic icon in the works of poets and painters, with its scenery of ancient castles, vineyards, and riverside towns, connecting many historic cities along its banks. Its most essential section is concentrated in the Middle Rhine Valley: dozens of ancient castles and fortresses are scattered along the banks, the reefs at the river bends hold ancient legends and poems, and vineyards are layered among the steep slate slopes, forming a magnificent natural and cultural landscape of the valley. Both banks are accompanied by walking trails and cycling paths, with numerous wine towns distributed along the way. The "Rhine in Flames" fireworks event, presented in turn by several towns along the river, has continued for many years and is a characteristic cultural event long held in this area, showcasing the rich atmosphere of the river basin.Germany · Germersheim

The Roman Forum

The Roman Forum is the historic heart of the old town of Frankfurt. Since the Middle Ages, it has served as a public center for municipal administration, commerce, and celebrations, and the coronation banquets of emperors during the Holy Roman Empire were once held at the Römer City Hall here. This building complex features stepped gables of varying heights, creating a striking silhouette. A row of half-timbered houses with bright colors and diverse styles serves as a typical representation of the German old town streetscape. In the center stands the Fountain of Justice, with the goddess holding a pair of scales in one hand and a sword in the other, adding a sense of solemnity. The building complex was damaged in 1944 and rebuilt according to its historical appearance, and subsequent construction projects reconnected the entire old town. Looking around, the medieval-style building complex and the modern high-rises rising in the distance appear in the same frame, creating a view where the new and the old reflect each other. During the Christmas season, the historic Christmas market spreads out here with a sea of lights and clusters of wooden huts, creating a rich festive atmosphere.Germany · Frankfurt

Rhine Falls
No. 1 of Best Things to Do in Canton of Schaffhausen

Rhine Falls

6.5
4.7/5
154 reviews
Rhine Fallsis located on the upper Rhine River in northern Switzerland, straddling the border between the Canton of Schaffhausen and the Canton of Zurich, just a few km from the old town of Schaffhausen. It is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe, where the riverbed, approx. 150 m wide with a drop of approx. 23 m, plunges down. During the high-water season, hundreds of cubic meters of water crash down every second, and you can hear the thunderous roar before you even get close. This waterfall was formed during the last glacial period, approx. 14,000–17,000 years ago, carved by the erosion of the riverbed narrowed by hard, erosion-resistant limestone. The massive rock standing in the center of the waterfall is a remnant of the ancient river cliff. An iconic experience is to take a small boat to the massive rock in the center of the waterfall, dock, and climb the stone steps to the platform on top, where you can feel the mist on your face and hear the deafening roar just inches from the water curtain. The views from both banks are unique: Laufen Castle on the Zurich side sits high on the cliff, making it a classic spot for a panoramic view of the waterfall; the viewing platform on the Schaffhausen side is close to the water, perfect for capturing the spray of the water curtain at eye level. You can take a boat round-trip between the two banks, or walk across the pedestrian path next to the upstream railway bridge to visit the other side, capturing the scenery from different angles.Switzerland · Neuhausen am Rheinfall

Titisee

Titisee is a natural lake shaped by glaciers. During the Ice Age, the Feldberg glacier carved out the lake basin, and moraine deposits formed the current shoreline. The lake surface is at an altitude of approx. 850 m, stretches for approx. 2 km, and reaches a depth of approx. 40 m. The clear lake water reflects the surrounding layers of forests and mountains. The origin of the lake's name is debated, but a widely circulated story is that the Roman general Titus marched here, was moved by the lake, and named it after himself. In summer, the lake is open for swimming, sailing, and windsurfing. You can also rent a pedal boat to head to the center of the lake or take a sightseeing cruise to slowly enjoy the forests and mountains on both shores from the water. The lakeside town of the same name on the north shore has a lakeside promenade lined with souvenir shops, and a representative local souvenir is the Black Forest cuckoo clock. These time-telling cuckoo clocks are hand-carved by local residents, and today, finished products of various sizes are displayed in the clock shops in town. The lake area takes on a different look in winter. The lake does not freeze over completely every year. Only when the ice reaches a sufficient thickness and is measured and confirmed to be safe will designated areas be marked off for people to walk or skate on the ice. Coupled with the surrounding sledding runs, this is also one of the places in the Black Forest for winter snow activities.Germany · Titisee

Pont Adolphe

Pont Adolpheis a stone arch bridge spanning the Vallée de la Pétrusse. It was built between 1900 and 1903 during the reign of Grand Duke Adolphe and was named after him. Since there was already an older bridge over the gorge, locals still habitually call this bridge the "new bridge." Its main arch has a span of approx. 85 m, and the bridge deck is approx. 42 m above the valley floor. When it was built, it was the largest-span stone arch bridge in the world. Two parallel giant arches support the bridge, making it a well-known city symbol of Luxembourg. One end of the bridge connects to the old town on the high ground, and the other end connects to the new district where the train station is located. The upper deck is for vehicles and pedestrians, and you can overlook the greenery of the gorge and the roofs of the old town from the railing. Below the bridge arches, there is a cantilevered lower walkway for pedestrians and cyclists. Walking on it, you can look up at the huge stone arches and get a different perspective to examine the structure of this century-old bridge. If you want to take a panoramic photo, you can head to a nearby plaza. Looking towards the gorge and the bridge from there is a common vantage point when visiting Luxembourg.Luxembourg City · 84.5km from Reil

The Petros Canyon, also known as the Luxembourg Grand Canyon, is one of the world's famous scenic spots. It is about 100 meters wide and 60 meters deep, naturally dividing Luxembourg City into two urban areas, the new and old areas in the north and south. Constitution Square is the best place to view the Grand Canyon and the scenery on both sides. Opposite the Grand Canyon, there is a palace-like building located in the green, which looks particularly magnificent. It is the Luxembourg National Savings Bank. At its north end is a tall pointed round bell tower, and on both sides are medieval buildings with only roofs visible.

This lesser-known attraction is worth a visit. The area isn't large, but it's incredibly popular. The view up close is quite breathtaking. Although I didn't get to climb to the national flag, being halfway up the mountain already gave me a real sense of its unstoppable, surging power. It's a bit chilly in autumn, so dress warmly and be sure to bring waterproof clothing.

The Adolphe Bridge, located in Luxembourg City, is a sturdy stone arch bridge spanning the Petrus Valley. Its greyish-white structure is quite substantial. Standing in the center, you can see the old town and treetops on both sides of the valley. Cars passing by in the adjacent lanes cause the bridge surface to vibrate slightly. Several walkways allow you to descend and admire the arches extending overhead. There's a viewing platform on the bridge, where tourists often lean against the railings to take photos. The bridge isn't very long, taking only a few minutes to walk across, but it's perfect for enjoying the scenery.
