Trulli, Rione Monti

4.3/5
15 reviews
Trulli, Rione Monti is one of the best-preserved complexes of conical stone dwellings in Europe. Trulli are a unique type of dry-stone construction built without mortar, relying solely on limestone blocks stacked in layers, with conical roofs formed by stones corbelled outward layer by layer. This architectural technique dates back to prehistoric times and is still used in the Itria Valley today. Originally scattered across the countryside as farmhouses, animal shelters, or storage for farm tools, Alberobello is where these trulli are clustered together. The town preserves over 1,500 trulli, mainly concentrated in two areas: the Rione Monti district in the south features approx. 1,000 conical-roofed houses, with various handicraft shops lining the streets, and many shop owners invite visitors inside to see the interior structure of the trulli; the Rione Aia Piccola district is smaller and retains a more authentic residential character, with no commercial shops, offering a quieter atmosphere perfect for a leisurely stroll. As you wander through, you will see layers of white limestone walls and gray conical roofs.Italy · Alberobello

Old Town

Old Town was founded in the 7th century and is situated on a limestone peninsula on the Adriatic coast, known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic." The old town is surrounded by well-preserved medieval walls. Walking along the walls offers panoramic views of the stretching red-tiled roofs, monastery bell towers, and the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea. Walking the walls is an unmissable experience when visiting this ancient city. Entering from the Pile Gate on the west side, you are greeted by the Stradun, the main street that runs through the old town, lined with buildings showcasing a variety of architectural styles, including Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. The Minceta Fortress at the northwest corner of the walls is the highest point, offering views of the entire old town and the distant sea. Outside the walls, the Lovrijenac Fortress stands on a seaside rock and is another great spot for overlooking the panoramic view of the old town. Known as a "city museum," this old town is also the main filming location for "King's Landing" in the TV series "Game of Thrones," and you will often encounter familiar scenes while strolling through it.Dubrovnik · 62km from Polace

Sea Organ

6.1
4.8/5
46 reviews
Sea Organ is a sound art installation on the promenade at the western end of the old town of Zadar, Croatia, designed by architect Nikola Bašić. It looks like a row of white marble steps extending into the Adriatic Sea, but the mechanism is hidden beneath them. Dozens of pipes of varying lengths and resonators are embedded in the steps. As waves surge in and out, they push air into the pipes, producing deep, long-lasting notes. The steps are tuned to different pitches, so the melody changes subtly as you walk along the promenade. When the sea is calm, the sound resembles the humming of a bottle being blown into, steady and gentle. When the waves are rough, the tones become rapid and undulating, with almost no two "performances" being exactly the same. This is also a popular spot in Zadar to watch the sunset. The steps face the open sea, and in the evening, you can sit on them to listen to the organ harmonize with the sound of the waves, watching the sunset paint the sea orange-red. Around sunset, it is often crowded with tourists and locals. There is no need to rush away after dark. Nearby is the "Greeting to the Sun," a circular light installation created by the same designer. It lights up with flowing patterns at night, and together with the music here, the dynamic light and static sound perfectly round off the evening by the sea.Croatia · Zadar

Sassi di Matera

5.2
4.8/5
23 reviews
Sassi di Matera is a vast, ancient cave settlement carved into the cliffs along the Gravina River canyon. The history of human habitation here dates back to the Paleolithic era, and it is considered one of the earliest human settlements in Italy. The entire cave area consists of two main districts, Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso. Dwellings, churches, and even animal pens were carved directly into the soft limestone rock, with roofs often serving as streets for neighbors, and stone houses cascading down the entire valley slope. Historically, local farmers and herders carved caves into the rock face to live in, gradually developing into a permanent village. Due to poor living conditions within the caves, most residents moved to the new city, and the old district fell into decline until it was restored and redeveloped at the end of the 20th century. Today, as you stroll through the stone alleys, you can enter cave dwelling museums that recreate the daily life of farmers from the past, visit hundreds of rock-hewn churches scattered throughout the area—many of which still retain frescoes from the Middle Ages—and find that many caves have been converted into hotels, restaurants, and shops. Because the landscape of the mountain city resembles ancient Jerusalem, it has frequently been chosen as a filming location, with movies such as "The Passion of the Christ," "Wonder Woman," and "No Time to Die" all filmed here. The Sasso Caveoso district is closer to the original cave form, with most of the rock-hewn churches and cave dwelling museums concentrated there, while the Sasso Barisano district has undergone more restoration and has a more orderly appearance. At dusk, head to the Piazzetta Pascoli viewpoint or look back from the Murgia Plateau on the opposite bank; the expanse of caves filling the valley slope in the sunset and lights is an iconic image of Matera.Italy · Matera

Dubrovnik Cathedral is located in the southeast corner of the old city. It is a Roman Catholic church with a very beautiful appearance. There are many precious paintings in the church with a long history. The treasure hall in the church contains many treasures, including hundreds of relics from the 11th to the 18th centuries. Dubrovnik Cathedral was built at the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century. This church has been damaged many times in history, experienced man-made damage by wars, and experienced earthquakes, but it still stands in Dubrovnik. rovnik. The overall building of the church is now in Baroque style. The appearance looks majestic, simple and heavy. There are many statues of legendary figures carved around the upper end of the building, which is impressive.Dubrovnik · 62km from Polace

Banje Beach is a famous beach in Dubrovnik, attracting tourists from all over the world. Here you can enjoy the old city walls and Lokrum Island from a good angle. The water here is clear and the sand is soft, which is very suitable for sports. The beach is close to the east entrance of the old town. It is a mixture of fine pebbles and some artificially laid sand. It provides lounge chairs, parasols for rent, and equipment such as jet skis and kayaks. There are open-air bars and seafood restaurants along the coast, where you can taste Croatian grilled fish and local wine. In summer, the beach club often holds sunset parties, and the lights at night illuminate the ancient city wall landscape with a unique atmosphere. Free public areas coexist with paid rest areas, with complete shower and changing facilities. Please note that waterproof shoes are required in the reef area, and it is recommended to choose shallow water activities for family trips.Dubrovnik · 62.5km from Polace

26 reviews
Trogir Old Town is situated on a small island on the Dalmatian coastal region of Croatia, connected to the mainland by a short bridge at one end and to the island of Čiovo at the other. It takes just over ten minutes to walk from one end of the small town to the other. Since its founding by the Greeks, it has endured for over two thousand years, with its medieval street layout and stone architecture preserved almost intact. Narrow alleys connect churches, noble palaces, and squares of various sizes, where Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance facades often appear on the same street. The Cathedral of St. Lawrence is the architectural heart of the old town. Its main entrance portal was created by the sculptor Radovan and is carved with biblical scenes, months, and labor motifs. You can climb the adjacent bell tower to overlook the sea of red-tiled roofs and the Adriatic Sea. The Kamerlengo Fortress at the western end of the old town was built by the Venetians. Walking a loop along the walls and towers offers a panoramic view of the entire old town, the yacht marina, and the coastline, making it a great spot for photography. The seaside promenade on the south side is a favorite gathering place for locals in the evening. One side is lined with yachts, while the other is filled with cafes and restaurants where you can sit down and taste authentic Dalmatian cuisine. Small shops in the alleys sell handicrafts and local specialties. When visiting, you might want to slow your pace; corners like the City Loggia and the Čipiko Palace, which are easily overlooked, also hold the details of the old town.Croatia · Trogir

Zadar City Gate

4.7
4.6/5
19 reviews
Zadar City Gate is the land gateway to the old town of Zadar, Croatia, and was once part of the fortifications of the Republic of Venice. Designed by Venetian architect Michele Sanmicheli and completed in the mid-16th century, it is considered one of the representative works of Renaissance architecture in the Dalmatian region. The gate is adjacent to the small fishing port of Foša and is modeled after the shape of an ancient Roman triumphal arch: the central opening was for carriages and horses, while the two narrower side openings were for pedestrians. The columns support the pediment above, creating a rigorous and ceremonial proportion. It is especially worth taking a closer look at the decorations on the gate: the relief of St. Chrysogonus, the patron saint of Zadar, riding a warhorse, appears in the same frame as the winged Lion of St. Mark, symbolizing Venice. On one side is the city's own guardian, and on the other is the mark of its former ruler, condensing this dual historical memory. The gate was originally surrounded by a moat, which has now become a corner of the harbor, but standing in front of the gate, one can still feel the imposing atmosphere of the fortress entrance from that time. Passing through the gate, you enter the old town. The Roman Forum, the Church of St. Donatus, and the Sea Organ by the sea are all within walking distance, making this a perfect first stop for exploring the old town. Early morning or evening, when the light is soft and the crowds are fewer, is a great time for taking photos and enjoying the view in peace.Croatia · Zadar
Golden Horn Beach

Golden Horn Beach

2 reviews
Golden Horn Beach is located in Croatia and is one of the beaches along the Adriatic Sea. This unique V-shaped beach gets its name from its shape, which resembles a golden horn, and it extends approx. 500 m into the sea. The beach is made up of fine white pebbles that shimmer with a golden glow in the sunlight. The clear, turquoise water contrasts sharply with the white beach, creating a charming view. The beach is surrounded by lush pine forests on both sides, providing natural shade. It is suitable for various water activities, such as swimming, snorkeling, and windsurfing. The beach offers umbrella and lounge chair rentals, as well as several restaurants and bars serving local food and drinks. It is worth noting that the shape and size of the beach change with the wind direction and currents, which means every visit may offer a different experience. The recommended time to visit is May–October, when the weather is warm and pleasant.Bol · 80.1km from Polace

When the weather is good, this place is absolutely beautiful, so my reminder is to make sure the sky is clear before you go, so that the photos will look good. Otherwise, if it is gray, although it is also beautiful, the photos taken will not have that fairy-tale feeling. The photos below were taken on a cloudy day, so the sky is not very blue. This place is definitely worth a visit, especially in the summer. It is very beautiful. There are many special shops, restaurants, cafes and places for handmade leather products.

The free-to-open Old Town of Dubrovnik is a living medieval museum! 4.4 points, 72 reviews, the cobblestone road connects the Pile Gate, the Cathedral, and the Catalan Avenue. It is a check-in spot for tourists during the day and a place for locals to live at night. Don't just chase the same style as "Game of Thrones", go into the alleys to find the handmade olive soap sold by the old lady, and watch the locals basking in the sun in the seaside cafe for an afternoon. The soul of the old city is hidden in these fireworks details. It is on the list of water play and summer vacation, because even the sea breeze brings a comfortable factor🌊

Diocletian's Palace, located in the heart of Split's Old Town, is more of an old town than a palace. Two-thousand-year-old stone walls have blended into cafes and residential buildings; the clock tower, a later addition, offers panoramic views of red rooftops and the Adriatic Sea. The cellars now house souvenir stalls, the air thick with the scents of stone and olive oil. A few meters apart outside the south water gate, the masts of yachts and ancient Roman columns create a sense of time standing still. It's usually quite crowded, but in the evening, after the tourists have left, it quiets down, and you can hear your own footsteps on the cobblestone streets.

There are some white stone steps built on the coast of Zadar. They don't look special, but when the sea rises to the right level, listen carefully and you will find that the sea is playing a wonderful music for you. This is the sea organ.

The ancient city is located on a peninsula and has hundreds of years of well-preserved human cultural heritage. Figure 1 is the Zadar Gate, which was built by the Venetians in 1543. The flying stone lion statue of St. Mark in the center of the gate shows its royal origin in the Venetian period. Under the stone lion is the equestrian statue of the patron saint, guarding the history of Zadar.

We stayed in Bol for 3 nights and spent the second night at the Golden Horn beach. It is a leisurely 30 minute walk. There are restaurants, bars and lots of water sports on the beach. We also bought foam mats for the beach (as the beach is very rocky).
