Vanalinn

Vanalinn

4.6/5
112 reviews
Vanalinn is a remarkably well-preserved medieval city on the Baltic Sea and was once an important trading port of the Hanseatic League. In the Lower Town, centered around Raekoja plats, the Gothic Old Town Hall stands on one side of the square. St. Olaf's Church, with its spire over 100 m high, the Three Sisters houses with their three connected gables, and the Town Hall Pharmacy, which has records of operation dating back to the early 15th century, are all scattered throughout this area; a few minutes south of the square is St. Nicholas' Church & Museum, which is now a museum of religious art; the late medieval masterpiece "Danse Macabre" housed inside is particularly worth a stop. The higher Toompea Castle area, also known as the Upper Town, features the onion-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin standing side by side, which, together with the ancient castle, outline the skyline. The medieval-style doors, windows, and hanging signs along the streets are details that many people easily miss. The preserved ancient city walls stretch for nearly 2 km, connecting one circular tower after another, offering a different perspective from the top of the wall. Walk to the Kohtuotsa and Patkuli viewing platforms on the edge of Toompea, where red-tiled roofs layer upon layer spread out toward the Baltic Sea.Estonia · Tallinn

Suomenlinna, located on the inner side of the Helsinki Bay, was a former military fortress and was included in the World Heritage List by the local authorities UNESCO in 1991. In the early 18th century, Finland was still under the rule of the Swedes. The Swedes decided to build forts on six islands off the coast of Helsinki. Construction of Suomenlinna began in 1748 under the command of Swedish commander Alan Swader, initially named Sveaborg. In 1808, the Russian army surrounded it and took over the island directly. Until 1918, it was renamed Suomenlinna, and until now, it is the place where Finnish troops are stationed.Finland · Helsinki

Oodi Helsinki Central Library

4.8/5
6 reviews
Oodi Helsinki Central Library is located in the heart of Helsinki, on one side of the Civic Square next to the Parliament House, and was designed by the Finnish architecture firm ALA Architects. The name Oodi means ode, and of its three floors, only the top floor is dedicated to books and reading; the entire building is more like an urban living room that incorporates reading, creation, and gathering. Each of the three floors has its own appeal: the ground floor continues the bustle of the square outside and features a cinema, a multi-purpose hall, a restaurant, and quick book lending and return services; the middle floor is a space for hands-on activities and creation, equipped with makerspaces and equipment open to the public; the top floor is an open reading area where a large collection of books is displayed under a wavy ceiling. The children's reading area is also located here, and the Citizens' Balcony on the side offers a view of the city center. The entire building is designed as a "habitable bridge": two massive steel arches span over 100 meters, supporting a wavy wooden shell that creates an open, column-free public space on the ground floor, allowing you to feel the sense of openness as the square extends into the interior upon entering. The double-spiral staircase connecting the floors is also a distinctive architectural element of the library.Finland · Helsinki

Sibelius Park is located in the northwest of Helsinki. It was built in 1945 to commemorate the 80th birthday of Jean Sibelius, the father of Finnish music. The park's main attraction is the Sibelius Monument, designed by sculptor Eila Hiltunen: hundreds of stainless steel pipes are welded in a wave-like pattern to form an abstract array several meters high, titled "Passio Musicae," which looks like a giant pipe organ from a distance. It is a great place to relax, with lush trees that are refreshing under the blue sky and white clouds. One side of the green space extends to a small bay, making it quite pleasant to sit on the lawn in the evening to enjoy the sea breeze and watch the sunset.Finland · Helsinki

Senate Square

4.5/5
127 reviews
Senate Square is located in the heart of Helsinki's old town, where the surrounding blocks still retain the city's early overall layout. Most of the neoclassical buildings surrounding the square were designed by German architect Carl Ludvig Engel. On the high terrace to the north stands Helsinki Cathedral with its white walls and dark green domes. The main building of the University of Helsinki is on the west side, and the Government Palace on the east side was built in 1822 and once served as the office of the Senate of Finland, from which the square derives its name. The Sederholm House in the southeast corner has stood in this neighborhood for two and a half centuries. In the center of the square stands a bronze statue of Alexander II, completed in 1894, with figures symbolizing law, culture, and the peasantry surrounding the base. Standing on the broad steps in front of the cathedral to overlook the entire stone-paved square is a favorite photo spot for visitors.Finland · Helsinki

The Baltic Daughter Statue, also known as the Bronze Statue of Amanda, is located next to the flower market in the open-air market in Helsinki, Finland. It is a bronze statue of a girl. Historical background The statue was first constructed in Paris in 1906, and in 1908 the bronze statue was transported to Helsinki and placed in its current location. Designer Ville Vallgren said that the image of a young girl emerging from the sea symbolizes the birth of Helsinki. Since then, this simple statue has become a symbol of Helsinki. The beauty of the sculpture This bronze maiden is named Amanda, and she is surrounded by four sea lions in a fountain. She rests her cheek in one hand and stares silently at the Gulf of Finland, so people affectionately call her "Daughter of the Baltic Sea". Festival Celebration Every year on May 1st, the Vappu Festival, Finnish high school and college students will hold a grand Vappu carnival next to the Amanda statue. Vecrīga

46 reviews
Although the total area of Vecrīga is not very large, it boasts over 800 years of history. Located in the Riga region of Latvia, Europe, it serves as both the geographical center of Riga and its historical and cultural center. Walking through it, you will find that the architectural styles and street layouts are much like those in Western European countries. From the Hanseatic League era, many historical landmarks remain here, such as the House of the Blackheads, along with many other historical traces. Although the name contains "Old Town," the "old" here refers to its long history, and the buildings themselves are far from "old." Each building holds its own against modern architecture, often possessing even more charm. Amber jewelry here is beautiful and quite famous. While the population is small, every Latvian is friendly and welcoming, always ready to answer travelers' questions, which is why this place is so popular with visitors.Latvia · Riga

Hill of Crosses is a pilgrimage site 12 km north of the city of Siauliai. It is believed that the first crosses were placed at a former military bunker site after the Lithuanian uprising against Russia in November 1831. Over the centuries, Catholic pilgrims have placed many crosses here, as well as giant crucifixes, sculptures of Lithuanian patriots, statues of the Virgin Mary, and thousands of tiny effigies and rosaries, each cross representing an unyielding spirit, a noble soul, and the silent, defiant national character.Lithuania · Meskuiciu seniunija

Vanalinn, Tallinn’s Old Town, is a beautifully preserved medieval quarter that feels like stepping into a storybook. Cobblestone streets wind past colorful merchant houses, Gothic churches, and hidden courtyards, all encircled by impressive stone walls and towers. Town Hall Square is the lively heart, perfect for soaking in the atmosphere from a cozy café. Climbing Toompea Hill offers panoramic views over red-tiled rooftops and the Baltic Sea. By day, it’s a treasure of history and architecture; by night, lantern-lit streets create a magical charm. Vanalinn is a must-visit for anyone seeking authentic medieval ambiance with a vibrant modern twist.

Suomenlinna is built on an island off the coast of Helsinki, a short 10-minute boat ride from Market Square. The island retains its walls, fortifications, and docks; the old buildings are painted a pale yellow, and the green-domed church stands out. In summer, the grass is lush and green, and locals bring blankets for picnics. You can stroll along the walking trails, enjoying views of the sea and the skyline of the city across the water. There's a submarine you can go inside; it's cramped but quite interesting. There are no cars on the island, so a leisurely half-day walk is perfect.

The first stop in Helsinki is Sibelius Park. The most famous monument here is the forest and archipelago, which was completed by a female designer in nearly six years and embodies abstract art.

One of the most classic buildings in Estonia Estonia is not big, Tallinn is even smaller. The whole Tallinn gives people a very good feeling. But if you want to talk about any landmarks, this church must have a name It was built in the late 19th century when Tallinn was under the rule of the Russian Empire, so it is a typical Russian style. It is also the largest and tallest Orthodox church in Tallinn.
