Blenheim Palace

493 reviews
Blenheim Palace is located in Oxfordshire, England. It was commissioned by Queen Anne as a reward for the first Duke of Marlborough's military achievements in the Battle of Blenheim in 1704. Construction began in 1705 and was completed in 1722, designed by Vanbrugh in the English Baroque style. It is one of the few non-royal, non-ecclesiastical country houses in England to be called a "palace." The palace is still inhabited by the Duke of Marlborough's family and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, along with its gardens. In 1874, former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was born here, which is why it is often referred to as "Churchill's birthplace." This magnificent palace boasts over 300 years of history to share and houses one of Europe's most significant and extensive collections. Its cultural highlights are diverse, complemented by a rich program of special activities and exhibitions year-round. You can explore the state rooms with an audio guide, admiring portraits, tapestries, and exquisite furniture while learning about the palace's three-century history. Stroll through the gardens and admire the charming English landscape, keeping an eye out for historical landmarks such as the victory column, the bridge and the temple of Diana along the way. Explore various formal gardens, including the rose garden, the water terrace and the secret garden. You can also take the miniature train to the walled garden, where you'll find the adventure playground, the Marlborough maze and the butterfly garden. Your palace, gardens and admission ticket include year-round activities and exhibitions. From jousting tournaments, food festivals and flower shows to Halloween daytime entertainment and Easter egg hunts, there's something for everyone. Inside the palace, you can explore breathtaking state rooms and immersive exhibitions that bring 300 years of history to life. Outdoors, you can discover over 2000 acres of Brown-designed landscapes, 150 acres of award-winning formal gardens, and the iconic rooftop restoration project. Whether visiting with friends or planning a family outing, your admission ticket will take you through unforgettable seasonal moments at this magnificent British palace.Blenheim · 12.2km from Oxford

This is the oldest botanical garden in England, established in 1621. About 8,000 kinds of plants are planted in the vast area of 20,000 square meters. There are many rare plants in the botanical garden, especially the cold-resistant spurge plants that are nationally collected. Across the flowers swaying in the wind, the view of the college tower and the Chawell River in front of you is more charming. The scenery here is very good, if you have time, you can go and take a good look.Oxford · 701m from downtown

• Stroll through Windsor Castle, the royal family's ancestral home • Admire exquisite treasures in the national suites • Enjoy audio guides and savor the beauty of the castle Windsor Castle has been the family residence of the British royal House of Windsor, situated on a hill overlooking the River Thames. Originally built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, the castle's design has evolved over time due to its long history, changing royal tastes, and financial circumstances, blending classical and modern elements. Windsor Castle can be divided into the Upper Ward, Middle Ward, and Lower Ward. The Upper Ward mainly features royal furnishings like the Waterloo Chamber (banquet hall) and art galleries. The Middle Ward has the Round Tower surrounded by the Rose Garden, while the Lower Ward includes Gothic-style St. George's Chapel among other attractions. The upper section primarily consists of state suites and royal private suites, renowned for their collection of royal paintings and treasures. With furniture and decorations dating back to the Middle Ages, each room here can be considered a small art gallery. The central area here is dominated by the round tower surrounded by rose gardens, originally built of wood and later reconstructed in stone. The round tower once served as a prison for royal political enemies but now primarily houses the royal archives and photography collections. St. George's Chapel in the Lower Ward is a fine example of English Gothic architecture, renowned for its magnificent stone fan-vaulted ceiling and exquisite stained glass windows. It has also hosted numerous royal weddings.Windsor · 54.1km from Oxford

If you pay attention, you will find that there is an indistinct line of demarcation between Oxford's business district and the college district, and the Carlfax Clock Tower is on the border - 14th century university teachers, students and citizens The melee happened here. The Calfax Clock Tower is the only remnant of St. Martin's Church. The history of St. Martin's Church can be traced back to the 11th century. During the continuous expansion of the road in the 19th century, the church and the fountain were demolished successively, and only the bell tower remained. Calfax Clock Tower has a total of 99 steps, and the tower can overlook the buildings and gardens of the colleges and universities.Oxford · 28m from downtown

It was a lot of fun, with fewer crowds and beautiful scenery. It was much more comfortable than traveling in China where there are many people. You could deeply experience the English countryside and learn about Churchill's life story. Highly recommended!

The teacher started from the Oxford University Museum and finally went to Chris Church College, bringing us a very detailed history of Britain and the origin of Oxford. The most impressive thing is the story of Bloody Mary: the conflict between the new and old churches, the three archbishops who were burned to death, and the violence and killing caused by an unfortunate childhood. The teacher prepared very carefully! When narrating, he could also cite modern classics. The children could also fill in and remember these stories based on film and television works, such as the history of the entire Oxford University & the division of labor of the colleges, etc., which can be understood in combination with the plot of Harry Potter~ Three hours of explanation, let us all want more!

The Bridge of Sighs (Oxford University, UK) is officially called Hertford Bridge. It is a famous attraction at Oxford University. The construction of the Bridge of Sighs began in 1913 (completed in 1914). It crosses New College Road and connects the old and new parts of Hertford College. It is a famous attraction at Oxford University. It was designed by Sir Thomas Jackson. Because the bridge is similar to the Bridge of Sighs in Venice, Italy, it is called the Bridge of Sighs. I came to Oxford University with a tour group and could only take a quick look.

The Bodleian Library - University of Oxford is the main library of the University of Oxford. It is one of the oldest libraries in Europe (opened in 1602) and the second largest in the UK after the British Library. library. This is one of the 6 statutory libraries in the UK. All Oxford publications will be automatically sent to this collection upon publication. There are many branches under the library, among which the Radcliffe Camera branch has become an important landmark of Oxford University. Many books are stored here, and non-Oxford University students can also visit it. Bodori Library is composed of a group of buildings of different historical periods and styles. It is said that there are underground passages connecting each building.

Covid regulations at the castle/prison dictate that an hours guided tour must be taken. In reality a visit without one would be a mistake. Our tour was conducted by Becca, right from the start it was obvious she has a thorough knowledge of the sights to see at the location. A thoroughly enjoyable, rewarding and enlightening visit. Highly recommended.

Walking on the campus of Oxford University, I saw that the botanical garden was also very beautiful. In fact, it is a bit difficult to tell the difference between the Oxford University Park and the botanical garden. It is still a place with green trees, birds singing and flowers blooming.

Getting from London to Windsor by bus (702 green line) is very convenient, even without taking the train. Photography is prohibited inside the church and castle. Seeing Queen Mary's Toy House reminded me of the inspiration for many miniature landscape designs in China. I personally think it's well worth a visit. Buying tickets is also very convenient. If you want to see the Changing of the Guard ceremony, enter the castle around 1 PM to find a good spot.
