Izu Peninsula

5.0/5
4 reviews
Izu Peninsula is a peninsula formed by volcanic activity. Two of the world's rare volcanic arcs converge here, creating a diverse landscape interwoven with hot springs, volcanic rock coasts, and mountain valleys. The peninsula is surrounded by the sea on three sides, offering a rich variety of scenery, from rugged coastlines to the dense forests and deep valleys of the Amagi Mountains. Hot springs are Izu's signature attraction. Shuzenji Onsen is said to have been established over 1,000 years ago and is a historic hot spring town on the peninsula. The hot spring street is built along the Katsura River, featuring the serene and deep Bamboo Forest Path, with Tokko-no-yu resting quietly in between. Atami and Ito on the east coast offer a different vacation atmosphere, where hotels stand by the sea, allowing you to enjoy ocean views while soaking in the hot springs. Traces of volcanic activity can be found all over the peninsula. Jogasaki Coast is a volcanic rock coast formed after lava from the eruption of Mt. Omuro approx. 4,000 years ago flowed into the sea, cooled, and was eroded by waves over many years. It spans approx. 9 km, and the Kadowaki Suspension Bridge hangs over the cliffs. Mt. Omuro itself is a perfectly round volcanic cone, and you can see a panoramic view of Izu from the summit. Dogashima on the west coast is famous for its sea caves; when you take a boat into Tensodo Cave, light pours down from the gap in the ceiling onto the water, creating a blue glow. Seafood is also a major feature of Izu. Being surrounded by the sea on three sides makes the local seafood exceptionally fresh. Splendid alfonsino is a representative local fish species, commonly found in hot spring hotels and coastal restaurants.Izu City · 29.2km from Mishima

The large glass windows of the Swiss-made gondola offer a 360-degree view of Hakone, making it hard to believe that this place is only a few hours from Tokyo. The station on the way is Owakudani Station, which is a well-known hot spring area where you can still see traces of volcanic activity in addition to overlooking Mount Fuji. The Hakone Ropeway is designed to be barrier-free, both in the carriages and at the station. Along the way, you can pass by Owakudani and Laozi, and you can get a bird's-eye view of the forest between Soun Mountain and Taoyuantai by Lake Ashi. At the heights between Soun Mountain and Dawong Valley, the cable car is 130 meters above the ground. The huge crater can be seen below, which is breathtaking. As you get closer to Umako and Togendai, you can see the panoramic view of Lake Ashi and Mount Fuji behind Mount Kinabalu and the four seasons from the cable car.Hakone · 16.5km from Mishima

Owakudani is a volcanic vent zone formed by Hakone volcanic activity approx. 3,000 years ago, with brown and yellow rocks exposed on the slopes, white steam constantly rising from springs and fumaroles, and the air filled with the scent of sulfur. It is also an important source for Hakone hot springs, where you can still see active geothermal phenomena today. There is an observation deck near the cable car station, from which you can see Mount Fuji and Mt. Kamiyama on clear days. The Kuro-tamago-kan showcases the process of making "black eggs" using hot spring water and geothermal steam, where the eggshells turn black due to a chemical reaction with the hot spring components, and there is a local legend that eating one can extend your life by seven years. The facility also includes a souvenir shop. The Owakudani Nature Trail is approx. 700m long, allowing you to observe the volcanic vent zone up close and learn about the volcanic geology through information boards along the way. The observation deck at the end of the trail offers views of the Hakone mountains and Mount Fuji.Hakone · 16.7km from Mishima

I really like the scenery, quietness and hot springs of the Izu Peninsula, and of course the restaurants with pure Japanese menus. Although it is a bit embarrassing, it is super exciting; I look forward to visiting in three weeks.

Lake Ashi is beautiful. This time, I saw Mount Fuji every day. The blue sky and white clouds offered a distant view of Mount Fuji, and I could also see the Hakone Shrine floating on the water. According to the introduction, Lake Ashi is the most beautiful crater lake in Hakone.

Chose to visit the Mount Fuji Instagram-famous spots on Trip.com's recommendation, and I couldn't have asked for a more relaxing and enjoyable experience. The itinerary included memorable locations such as Arakurayama Sengen Park, Hikawa Clock Shop, Oshino Hakkai, Kawaguchiko Lawson, and Lake Kawaguchi Oishi Park—each offering its own breathtaking view of Mt. Fuji. Our tour guide (Hikari) truly made the trip special: not only was he friendly, but he was also impressively patient throughout the day, making sure everyone felt comfortable and had enough time to enjoy each spot. The pace of the tour was just right, allowing for leisurely sightseeing and ample opportunities for taking photos—perfect for capturing those Instagram-worthy moments! If you're considering this day trip, I recommend bringing your camera and a light jacket, as weather around Mt. Fuji can change. The service from Trip.com was smooth and easy, making the whole experience stress-free.

Price is about the same as buying over the counter, except that we didnt have to queue in line. It's basically a skywalk with a nice view of Mt Fuji. Skywalk seems new. There were also ziplines right beside the skywalk that kids were playing (requires additional cost to play). Across the bridge, there were some food stalls, restaurant and an animal petting store. Overall good for about 2hours.
