Old Town

7.2
4.5/5
77 reviews
Old Town was founded in the 7th century and is situated on a limestone peninsula on the Adriatic coast, known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic." The old town is surrounded by well-preserved medieval walls. Walking along the walls offers panoramic views of the stretching red-tiled roofs, monastery bell towers, and the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea. Walking the walls is an unmissable experience when visiting this ancient city. Entering from the Pile Gate on the west side, you are greeted by the Stradun, the main street that runs through the old town, lined with buildings showcasing a variety of architectural styles, including Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. The Minceta Fortress at the northwest corner of the walls is the highest point, offering views of the entire old town and the distant sea. Outside the walls, the Lovrijenac Fortress stands on a seaside rock and is another great spot for overlooking the panoramic view of the old town. Known as a "city museum," this old town is also the main filming location for "King's Landing" in the TV series "Game of Thrones," and you will often encounter familiar scenes while strolling through it.Dubrovnik · 9.1km from Kolocep

Dubrovnik City Walls

4.7/5
159 reviews
Dubrovnik City Wallsare limestone defensive walls that encircle the old city, with a total length of nearly 2 km and reaching heights of approx. 25m. Earlier fortifications date back to the early Middle Ages, while most of the existing structure was built between the 13th and 17th centuries and was successively expanded by citizens of the Republic of Ragusa and architects from places like Italy. It remained largely undamaged during the great earthquake of 1667 and is considered one of the finest medieval defensive projects. Throughout the long years, it has never been breached by enemy forces, safeguarding the city's peace and prosperity for centuries. Walking the full circuit along the wall-top path is a classic way to experience this site: the Minčeta Tower at the northern end stands as the highest point of the entire line, offering panoramic views of the old city's layered red-tiled roofs and the Adriatic Sea in the distance; the circular Bokar Fortress on the west side protrudes from the wall and hangs over the sea, guarding the Pile Gate; while St. John's Fortress at the southeastern end guards the entrance to the old port. The old city and the walls are also one of the filming locations for King's Landing in the series Game of Thrones. Looking out from the walls at the red tiles and blue sea, you will understand why this ancient seaside city attracts visitors all year round.Dubrovnik · 9.3km from Kolocep

Fort Lovrijenac

Fort Lovrijenac, also known as St. Lawrence Fortress, stands on a cliff over 30 m above the sea, outside the western gate of the old city of Dubrovnik, and is called "Dubrovnik's Gibraltar" due to its strategic location. Legend has it that in the 11th century, the Venetians planned to build a fortress on the cliff top to control the city, but local residents preemptively built their own fortress in just three months, forcing the Venetian ships, which arrived fully loaded with building materials, to turn back. The fortress is triangular in plan and divided into three levels of platforms. The wall facing the sea is over 10 m thick, while the side facing the old city is only a few dozen cm thick—this difference in thickness was a deliberate design by the former Republic of Ragusa: in the event that the fortress commander defected, the artillery from within the city could easily suppress it. Above the gate is a Latin inscription that means "Freedom cannot be sold for all the treasures in the world," which is the city's motto that has been passed down for centuries. Today, the interior of the fortress has been converted into an open-air theater, and the Shakespeare play "Hamlet" performed here has become a signature production of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival; it was also a filming location for the "Red Keep" in King's Landing in the American TV series "Game of Thrones." Standing on the seaside platform and looking out over the railing, you can take in the old city's red-tiled roofs, the winding city walls, and the shimmering Adriatic Sea.Dubrovnik · 8.7km from Kolocep

The Pile Gate is located in the west of the old city and is one of the main entrances and exits of Dubrovnik. The city gate is divided into inner and outer gates. The outer city gate was built in 1537. It is a Renaissance-style arch, and it is engraved with the protection of the Holy Bres. The inner city gate is built in Gothic style in 1460, and the statue of St. Bres on it was sculpted by the great Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic in the 20th century. The gates are locked every night, and the keys are kept in the guard room of the palace.Dubrovnik · 8.9km from Kolocep

Banje Beach is a famous beach in Dubrovnik, attracting tourists from all over the world. Here you can enjoy the old city walls and Lokrum Island from a good angle. The water here is clear and the sand is soft, which is very suitable for sports. The beach is close to the east entrance of the old town. It is a mixture of fine pebbles and some artificially laid sand. It provides lounge chairs, parasols for rent, and equipment such as jet skis and kayaks. There are open-air bars and seafood restaurants along the coast, where you can taste Croatian grilled fish and local wine. In summer, the beach club often holds sunset parties, and the lights at night illuminate the ancient city wall landscape with a unique atmosphere. Free public areas coexist with paid rest areas, with complete shower and changing facilities. Please note that waterproof shoes are required in the reef area, and it is recommended to choose shallow water activities for family trips.Dubrovnik · 9.6km from Kolocep

The free-to-open Old Town of Dubrovnik is a living medieval museum! 4.4 points, 72 reviews, the cobblestone road connects the Pile Gate, the Cathedral, and the Catalan Avenue. It is a check-in spot for tourists during the day and a place for locals to live at night. Don't just chase the same style as "Game of Thrones", go into the alleys to find the handmade olive soap sold by the old lady, and watch the locals basking in the sun in the seaside cafe for an afternoon. The soul of the old city is hidden in these fireworks details. It is on the list of water play and summer vacation, because even the sea breeze brings a comfortable factor🌊

Walking around Dubrovnik's city walls takes about two hours. The undulating stone steps gleam pale yellow in the sunlight. Looking down at the Adriatic Sea from a high vantage point, the water is a brilliant blue, and the red-tiled roofs of the old town spread out densely, as if huddled together for warmth. The fortifications on the walls retain traces of their past, and occasionally seagulls can be seen perched on the crenellations. The world outside and inside the walls is two separate realms: outside are yachts and cruise ships, inside are cobblestone alleys and sheets drying in the sun. If you get tired, you can sit for a while in the shade of one of the towers, the wind carrying the scent of salt.

Rovellijenak Fortress 🏰 This "jelly sea" is so beautiful it's almost unreal 🥹💙 No wonder Game of Thrones chose this location for King's Landing's "Red Keep"! This fortress is built on a 37-meter-high cliff, and to prevent Venetian invasion, the locals completed it in just 3 months!

The Pile Gate is the main entrance to the old city. Whether it is a group of tourists or backpackers, they all take this as the first stop in the old city. Take bus 1A or 1B at the entrance of Dubu Bus Station and arrive here in 20 minutes. Today, the moat outside the city has long dried up and has been transformed into a small green space, which has become a good place for children to play. [Scenery]

Walking on the pebbled beach, the clear water gently caresses your feet. The beach is very suitable for sports, and the bar street next to it attracts young people to stop. I don't think this can be called a fountain, but it's still quite special and large in scale. It's actually a stone sculpture and a water storage place with some water outlets around it, which is pretty good.

The clock tower is located in the center of the old city. It is still in use today and tells time on the hour. There is a small market under the clock tower, which is pretty good. I wonder if you can climb to the top of the clock tower.
