Jardin Majorelle

This was once a private villa built by French artist Jacques Majorelle, and later bought by French fashion master Yves Saint Laurent and lived here for several years. Now open to become a popular attraction in Marrakech, the garden is full of rare plants, surrounded by a blue villa, as well as the tombstone of Yves Saint Laurent and a small cafe. French artist Jacques Majorelle acquired a piece of land on the outskirts of Marrakech (now the new district of the city) in 1924, and then devoted almost his entire life experience to designing and building this garden, collecting various plants from all over the world to build a cactus garden , vine promenade, lotus pond, bamboo forest trail... It is said that there are more than 100 kinds of cactus alone. The garden is filled with the painter's favorite blue, and villas, vases, walls, pools, etc., all have this bright and pure blue. This blue was later called Majorelle blue. Until the painter died in a car accident in 1962, the garden was slowly abandoned. In 1980, Yves Saint Laurent and his legendary gay partner Pierre Berge discovered the Majorelle garden in Marrakech and immediately bought the garden. For nearly 30 years, the master lived in the Majorelle garden every spring. On June 1, 2008, the costume master passed away. Pierre Berge scatters his ashes in the garden to fulfill the master's wish. Now the villa has been turned into a museum, and in a room behind the villa, Yves Saint Laurent's manuscripts are displayed.Marrakech · 56.5km from Imlil

Hassan II Mosque

9.1
4.8/5
240 reviews
The Hassan II Mosque is located on the Atlantic coast of Casablanca and was completed in 1993. It is one of the few mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslim travelers. A significant portion of the mosque extends over the sea, allowing worshippers to pray facing the ocean—a design inspired by the Quranic imagery of "the throne upon the water." Standing beside the mosque is its approx. 210 m tall minaret, topped with a laser beam pointing toward Mecca, visible from many parts of the city and even the sea. The mosque can accommodate over 100,000 worshippers simultaneously, both inside and outside, ranking among the largest in the world. Visitors must join guided tours to explore the mosque, which includes access to the prayer hall—a rare opportunity. The hall features polished marble floors, cedar wood carvings from the Middle Atlas Mountains, hand-cut glazed mosaics, and smooth plaster walls, all illuminated by Murano glass chandeliers. The central roof can open, allowing the hall to bask in sunlight on clear days. Outside, the seaside plaza and seawall offer iconic views, with white stone walls reflecting the Atlantic's blue hues and waves crashing nearby. Visitors are reminded to observe religious etiquette: shoes must be removed before entering, shoulders and knees should be covered, and women are advised to cover their hair (scarves are often available at the entrance). Photography is permitted during tours, but avoid pointing cameras at worshippers. In the morning, sunlight streams into the hall, highlighting the intricate mosaics and stonework. At dusk, the minaret framed against the sunset is a quintessential image of Casablanca.Morocco · Casablanca

Marrakesh

Marrakesh is located in southern Morocco and is known as the "Red City" due to the ochre-red earth used in most of its architecture. The heart of the city is the Medina, a World Heritage site densely packed with winding alleys and open-air markets. Souk Semmarine is one of the larger markets in the old city, offering everything from handmade carpets and leather goods to spices and copper lamps. Wandering through it is a cultural experience in itself. The center of the old city is Jemaa el-Fnaa. During the day, the square is filled with fruit juice stalls and handicraft booths, while at night it transforms into an open-air food street where snake charmers, storytellers, and traditional musicians take turns performing. Near the square stands the 12th-century Koutoubia. Its towering minaret is the city's landmark, and the gardens surrounding the mosque are also worth a visit. Bahia Palace showcases the craftsmanship of traditional Moroccan architecture, with its exquisite courtyards, carved wooden doors, and inlaid tiles. Outside the old city, the Majorelle Garden is famous for its unique "Majorelle Blue" architecture and exotic plants. It was created by French painter Jacques Majorelle and later restored and preserved by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent. At sunset, find a rooftop café in the old city, order a pot of mint tea, and watch the sunset cast an even richer glow on the ochre-red walls—this is one of the quintessential Marrakesh experiences.Marrakech · 54.3km from Imlil

Bahia Palace

Bahia Palace is a well-preserved 19th-century palace complex in Morocco. Construction began in the 1860s under the direction of Si Moussa, a grand vizier to the Sultan of Morocco, and was later significantly expanded by his son, Ba Ahmed, between 1894 and 1900. "Bahia" means "brilliant" in Arabic and is said to be the name of one of Ba Ahmed's favorite wives. The entire palace covers nearly two hectares, with approximately 150 rooms arranged around multiple courtyards and interior gardens, creating a maze-like layout due to its phased expansion. The grand courtyard is paved with Italian Carrara marble and surrounded by painted wooden colonnades, with dozens of rooms nearby believed to have been the living quarters for Ba Ahmed's harem. The grand hall at the east end of the courtyard features the palace's most impressive painted cedar wood ceiling. The large garden on the north side is the oldest part of the palace and still retains trees planted in the 19th century. The palace's decoration embodies the essence of traditional Moroccan craftsmanship: walls are adorned with plaster reliefs carved with Arabic inscriptions, geometric patterns, and floral vines; floors are paved with hand-cut, colorful glazed mosaic tiles; and ceilings are decorated with painted cedar wood patterns. The materials used in its construction were brought from all over Morocco—marble from Meknes, cedar wood from the Middle Atlas Mountains, and tiles from Tetouan—and were completed through the collaboration of artisans from across the country.Marrakech · 54.1km from Imlil

Jemaa el-Fnaa is located in theold city of Marrakech, the heart of this thousand-year-old city, serving as both a public square for local gatherings and a traditional open-air market. The square's charm lies in its completely different appearance by day and night. During the day, stalls selling freshly squeezed orange juice, spices, and traditional herbs line up, while snake charmers and monkey trainers occupy corners of the square, and traditional dentists set up shop on the street. After dark, the entire square is transformed, with stalls serving Moroccan snacks like grilled meats and tagines packed closely together, Berber musicians and Gnaoua dancers begin their evening performances, acrobats and storytellers improvise for the crowds, and henna artists set up stalls to attract customers.Marrakech · 54.7km from Imlil

Koutoubiais located in the southwest of the old town of Marrakech, Morocco, and is one of the representative historical landmarks of this Red City. The overall structure is dominated by red sandstone tones, harmonizing with the red architectural style of Marrakech's old town. The striking minaret, with a height of about 77m, is an important part of the city's skyline. The four sides of the tower are decorated with distinctive geometric arched patterns, with regular lines and harmonious proportions, reflecting the simple and solemn artistic style of Almohad dynasty architecture. The top of the tower consists of a spire and metal spheres, with a distinct outline that is particularly eye-catching under the sunlight. Its unique tower design also had an important influence on the Giralda bell tower in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat, making it of high historical and architectural research value.Marrakech · 54.5km from Imlil

Aït Benhaddou is an ancient earthen settlement in the heart of the Atlas Mountains in southern Morocco, situated on the ancient trade route connecting the Sahara Desert and Marrakech. It was once an important transfer station for the transport of gold, salt, and spices in trans-Saharan trade. It is said that the village was founded in the 8th century. Although most of the existing buildings were constructed after the 17th century, they use earthen construction techniques that have been passed down for hundreds of years, making it a representative relic of earthen architecture in southern Morocco. The entire settlement is built along the hillside, with layers of red earthen walls, corner towers, and kasbahs connected to each other, forming a spatial pattern enclosed by narrow alleys and high walls. The towering defensive walls and corner towers were used to fend off raids in the past, while the layout of residential houses, mosques, and public spaces in close proximity reflects the lifestyle of the Berber community. At the higher part of the village is the former hilltop granary; climbing up here offers a panoramic view of the entire settlement and the valley. While walking through the alleys, you can also see small handicraft shops opened by local residents, and a few families still live in the old village today. Due to its unique ancient city view, this settlement has become a filming location for numerous film and television works. Films such as "Lawrence of Arabia," "The Jewel of the Nile," "The Mummy," and "Gladiator" were all shot here, and it also served as a filming location for the city of Yunkai in "Game of Thrones."Ait Ben Haddou · 75.7km from Imlil

Boulevard de la Corniche is a coastal scenic road in Casablanca bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Located in the western coastal area of the city, it stretches for several km. The boulevard consists of a wide roadway and a wooden boardwalk on the seaside, where you can overlook the blue Atlantic Ocean by leaning on the railing. The area below the boardwalk railing that extends toward the beach is lined with leisure facilities such as cafes, bars, and swimming pools. A locally famous "Miami" cafe is located at the turn at the southern end of the boulevard, and the boulevard is named after it. The cafe is built on a high embankment with water on both sides. Sitting in the outdoor seating area, you have a view of the open Atlantic Ocean. Evening is the main time to visit. As the sun sets, the coastal boardwalk is filled with residents and tourists taking a walk, and the cafe terraces gradually become lively. Along the boulevard, there are also cultural exhibits and photo spots related to the film "Casablanca".Morocco · Casablanca

Todgha Gorge

Todgha Gorge is located near Tinerhir in the eastern part of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, formed by the Todgha and Dades rivers cutting through limestone over a long period. Starting from Tinerhir, a road winds into the gorge, passing mud-brick villages and ancient kasbahs along the way. As you go deeper, the rock walls on both sides gradually rise and narrow, reaching a width of only approx. 10m at the narrowest point, while the cliffs tower hundreds of meters high. Standing at the bottom of the valley and looking up, the steep, smooth rock walls look like a split in the earth that blocks out most of the sky. The rock walls in the core section of the gorge are nearly vertical and smooth, with limestone walls displaying a blend of brownish-red and golden hues that show distinct layers under the sunlight. During the dry season, the riverbed is mostly dry and can be traversed on foot, while water levels rise significantly during the rainy season. You can traverse this section by car or on foot. Walking offers a more direct experience of the gorge's imposing and magnificent scale without the obstruction of a car roof. Hundreds of rock climbing routes have been established on the cliff walls, ranging from beginner to advanced levels, making it a popular destination for climbers in Morocco. You can hike a loop along the trail, which offers panoramic views of the Atlas Mountains highlands and passes through Berber villages.Morocco · Tinerhir

Taourirt Kasbah is located south of the Atlas Mountains on the edge of the Sahara Desert, guarding the strategic valley at the confluence of the Oued Draa and the Dades River. It was once an important station on the trans-Saharan trade route. The kasbah is built of rammed earth and mud bricks and is a typical representative of Berber architectural style. The complex is vast, with an interior that is a labyrinth of narrow passages, steep stairs, and hidden doors. Square towers stand at the four corners, and the outer walls are adorned with geometric patterns and niches. There are still some unrestored areas at the rear of the kasbah where local families continue to live, maintaining their original way of life. It has also served as a filming location many times, appearing in international films such as "Gladiator" and "Prince of Persia."Morocco · Ouarzazate

Visiting the Hassan II Mosque was the absolute highlight of my time in Casablanca. From the moment I stepped onto the oceanfront esplanade, I was struck by its sheer scale—the intricate zellij tilework, carved cedar ceilings, and the towering 210-meter minaret are breathtaking in person. The guided tour was well-organized and gave fascinating insight into Moroccan craftsmanship and Islamic tradition, but the most unforgettable moment was standing in the glass-floored prayer hall, watching the Atlantic waves roll directly beneath my feet. Even if you're not religious, this is a masterpiece of art and engineering that deserves a spot on any traveler's itinerary. Just be sure to arrive early for the best light and fewer crowds—it's an experience that will stay with me forever.

Djemaa dl Fna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Grand Bazaar of the Old City; the Grand Bazaar of the Old City has thousands of shops selling all kinds of handicrafts, and skilled craftsmen everywhere make fine products. Wood products, leather products, iron products, metal products, as well as ceramics, wool, sheepskin lamps, olives and the most famous Moroccan slippers, etc., are a shopper's paradise; Djema Square is even more lively, and the square is the horse racing The epitome of the people's life in Lakash, there are also various street performances such as acrobatics, belly dancing, fire eaters, snake charmers, monkey dancers, etc.

【Ait Ben Haddou】The ancient city is located in Ouarzazate, Morocco, in an oasis on the edge of the Sahara Desert. The entire castle is composed of traditional Moroccan mud houses, mostly built with a mixture of licorice and terracotta. The appearance is slightly rough, but at a glance outside the ancient city, you can be shocked by its spectacular and sacred pattern. As early as 1987, it was listed as a World Cultural Heritage. Walking into the ancient city, you will find that these golden red adobe castles and turrets seem to have drilled out from the ground, which are stunning and dramatic. People can't help but admire the local construction technology, especially under the sunlight, these castles are even more charming. This place not only attracts tourists from all over the world, but also Hollywood directors favor this charming ancient city. Many movies that are popular with movie fans around the world have been filmed here, including "The Lost Tomb", "Star Wars Prequel", "Mission Impossible V", etc., so the ancient city of Haddou has also won the title of Hollywood in North Africa and has become a holy place for many movie lovers. There are many desert tour introductions on the streets and hotels in Marrakech, which is very convenient for traveling the next day. At 7:30, we set off for the journey to Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert. The scenery on both sides of the road gradually changed from wheat fields to wastelands, with clusters of weeds crawling on the ground like moss. Finally, it became a bare hillside. The Atlas Mountains stretch across northwest Africa, separating the southwestern Mediterranean coastal area from the Sahara Desert, winding for 2,400 kilometers. The name of the mountain range is taken from Atlas, the Hercules who supported the sky with his shoulders in ancient Greek mythology. The ancient Greeks named it after this, meaning that this is the westernmost end of the world. From Marrakech to Ouarzazate, you have to cross the Atlas Mountains, and the winding mountain road turns uphill all the way. The old driver drove the car very fast, and arrived at the first stop, Ait ben Haddou, at nearly twelve o'clock. This Kasabahs (castle) was a pass established by the Berbers four hundred years ago to control the golden salt trade route from South Africa (black Africa south of the Sahara Desert) to Venice. The castle is built on a hill by the river, controlling the valley below. It was originally abandoned. It was rediscovered by European tourists in the 1960s and was named a World Heritage Site in 1987. Director Spiegel and others have filmed movies here, such as "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Gladiator", which made this increasingly forgotten village famous, and hundreds of thousands of tourists come here every year. Ait ben Haddou is also ranked second in the list of popular locations for "Game of Thrones". There are only eight households in the castle now, and most of the houses have collapsed, with no signs of their former glory. They rely on some new houses built during the filming to support the scene. The village built on the hillside is staggered and quite imposing. The outline is like Manhattan in New York and Lujiazui in Shanghai. The construction of the houses here is the same as the dry-rammed earth in China. First, straw and clay are rammed into large bricks and piled up to form walls. Then, beams made of palm trunks and rafters made of reeds are laid on top, and finally, clay and limestone roofs (Lime Chalk) are laid. In the hot desert, the thick walls separate the heat outside. Walking in the corridor, there is a cool breeze.
