Atomic Bomb Dome

The Atomic Bomb Dome, also known as the Hiroshima Peace Monument, was originally the Hiroshima Prefecture Industrial Award Hall, located on the banks of the Yuanyasu River in the center of Hiroshima. On August 6, 1945, the U.S. bombed Hiroshima with an atomic bomb, and almost all the buildings near the center of the explosion were razed to the ground. Today the ruins of the building are preserved as a memorial to the event and are listed on the World Heritage List. Family members of atomic bomb radiation victims are often encountered near the dome, and they will enthusiastically tell foreign tourists the story of the atomic bombing and their families in English. It is also a place frequently visited by local elementary and middle school students, and every year, peace groups from all walks of life in Japan hold commemorative activities here. The Hiroshima City Government built a Peace Park around the atomic bomb dome. In addition to numerous statues and monuments, the park also has a Peace Memorial Museum, which displays clothing, glasses, hair and other items that have experienced the atomic bomb. It is worth visiting one time. Every year on August 6th, the locals will hold a river lantern event on Yuanan River, and put various lanterns with eulogy and prayers into the river.Hiroshima City · 1.2km from downtown

The Seto Inland Sea is located between Japan's Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, surrounded by busy port cities such as Osaka, Kobe and Hiroshima. There are dotted islands, simple and natural fishing villages, quaint and mysterious ancient temples and shrines. Although the Seto Inland Sea is an unfamiliar place to Chinese tourists, it is a tourist destination for Japanese people and is known as a "legacy for the future". Spring is the season when cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Different from other cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan, in the Seto Inland Sea, you can not only enjoy the early cherry blossoms, but also enjoy the beautiful seascape and feel the pure Japanese folk customs.Hiroshima City · 77.8km from downtown

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is located in the center of Hiroshima and was designed and constructed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange in 1954. The park is lush with greenery, cherry blossoms in spring, and two rivers flow around the park, a stark contrast to the severe trauma caused by the atomic bombing of World War II. In the park, there are monuments to the victims of the atomic bombing, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, etc. The Peace Memorial Ceremony is also held on August 6 every year.Hiroshima City · 879m from downtown

Miyajima, also called Itsukushima, is located in the southwest of Hiroshima Prefecture, and is listed as one of the "Three Views of Japan" along with Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture and Amanohashidate in Kyoto Prefecture. There are world cultural heritage sites such as Itsukushima Shrine, Mishan, and many historic shrines and temples. When you come to Miyajima, you can see the Itsukushima Shrine built by the sea and the large vermilion torii that stands in the sea. This is a famous landscape of Miyajima. The elegant shrine of vermilion lacquer in the shrine combines with the blue of the sea in front of it and the emerald green of the virgin forest of Misan in the background, making people feel the beauty and splendor of the Heian period. In the sea about 200 meters in front of the shrine, there is a large red torii gate with a height of 16.6 meters, which is very eye-catching. In addition to Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima has many other temples worth visiting. To the west of Itsukushima Shrine is the Daiganji Temple, which is famous for housing Japan's three major Bensaiten (one of the seven gods of good fortune). On the hill to the left (northeast) of the entrance to Itsukushima Shrine, there are five-storied pagodas that combine Japanese and Chinese styles, and Senjokaku, which is said to have a thousand tatami in the main hall. About 10 minutes southwest from Itsukushima Shrine, there is a Daisho-in Temple, where you can see many Buddhist halls, mandalas and Buddha statues. Misan is the main peak of Miyajima. There are many rare plants that can only be seen in Miyajima growing in the virgin forest on the mountain. It is also a good place to get close to nature. It is wonderful to take the aerial cable car to climb the mountain and see the magnificent scenery of Miyajima from mid-air; hiking from the foot of the mountain is also unique, and you will encounter many cute deer along the way. Next to the end of the ropeway is the Shishi Rock Observatory, from which you can enjoy the beautiful Seto Inland Sea. Continue to walk to the top of the mountain, and the 360-degree viewing angle is even more fascinating. On a clear day, you can see the peaks of Shikoku in the distance. In addition, there are many shrines, Buddhist pavilions and other historical sites that can be visited on the top of Misan Mountain.Hatsukaichi · 18.6km from Hiroshima City

Hijiyama Park is about 70 meters above sea level, and here you can overlook the panoramic view of Hiroshima City and the Seto Inland Sea. The art sculptures in the park are famous. Every spring, more than 1,300 cherry trees bloom in competition, which is so beautiful that it is regarded as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot. It is worth mentioning that every evening, high-rise buildings and hotels are lined up on Heihe Odori, so that the neon lights spread in the eyes, and you can enjoy the "close-up night view" here. You can enjoy the beautiful night cherry blossoms in spring, the fresh green of summer and the beauty of nature, and you can enjoy the neon lights of the vast, jewel-like streets. Enjoying art in the art gallery during the day and going to Hijiyama Park at night to see the night view is really a leisurely time.Hiroshima City · 1.7km from downtown

About 200 meters in front of Itsukushima Shrine, there is a large red torii gate with a height of 16.6 meters, which is the iconic landscape of Miyajima. When the sea is high tide, the large torii gate, which is half-submerged by the sea, looks mysterious and spectacular, and it is especially beautiful when viewed from the stage "Before the Fire" that stretches out from Itsukushima Shrine. After the tide goes out, you can go directly to the bottom of the big torii gate and watch it up close. At dusk, the golden sky reflects the majestic appearance of the large torii gate, which is a good time to take pictures. At night, the shrine and the large torii gate will be lit up with lights, which has a unique flavor. If you stay overnight in Miyajima, the Itsukushima Shrine and the Great Torii Gate in the early morning are especially sacred, peaceful and beautiful, not to be missed.Hatsukaichi · 15.9km from Hiroshima City

Looking for a powerful, beautiful spot in Japan? Hiroshima City is home to the Peace Memorial Park, and I visited just as cherry blossoms exploded into color throughout the city 🌸Location: Nakajimacho, Naka Ward, Hiroshima, 730-0811, Japan Hours: Open 24/7, year-round (especially magical in cherry blossom season!) What makes it special: This park isn’t just a green space, but a living memory of hope and peace. You’ll see the iconic A-Bomb Dome, beautiful modern architecture, and moving memorials alongside the rivers. The vibe is respectful, serene, and breathtaking—especially when the cherry blossoms are out during spring.Getting around: Hiroshima’s streetcar system makes it super easy to reach the park from anywhere in the city—look for the green line towards Hondori and get off at Genbaku Dome-mae. No need to worry about timing, since the park is open all day. What’s more, if you’re traveling with a group you can hire VR headsets to use at the park!

When I was on a business trip to Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, I took a train to near Miyajima and then took a ferry across. For lunch, I had the local specialty conger eel rice and a beer, then strolled over to the aquarium. As the sun gradually sank, I spent some time relaxing watching the sunset and the torii gates. On the way home, I had a few fried oysters and a beer, and it was a rare experience to watch the sun slowly sink.

The monument represents a little girl reaching for a crane, which in Japan is a symbol of longevity and happiness. It is related to a true story of a little girl from Hiroshima who was only a few years old when the epidemic broke out and became very sick. She believed that if she made 1,000 paper cranes, she could be cured. It is very popular among children who decorate with cranes.

It is a temple on a hillside northwest of Hiroshima Station. It is said to have been built by Kukai and was called Santaki-ji because there are three waterfalls in the area: Komaga-taki, Brahma-n-taki, and Yumei no Taki. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes as it leads to a fairly long climb of stairs from the parking lot to the temple and Ichi-no-Taki at the top. Taiwa was moved from Wakayama Shrine to commemorate the atomic bomb explosion and is very admirable. And because there was little damage when the atomic bomb was dropped, it became a temporary relief center for the victims, and many memorials commemorating the desire for peace can be seen in the area.

The Miyajima Torii in Japan is the Torii of Itsukushima Shrine. It is a national important cultural property. It is about 16.6m high and weighs about 60 tons. The cypress roof is 24.2m long. The main column has a circumference of 9.9m and is made of natural nanmu. The current Torii was rebuilt in 1875, and it is the eighth generation since the Heian period. The upper beam is hollow, and it is filled with fist-sized stones totaling 7 tons, so it can stand in the ocean current without falling.
