Seljalandsfoss
No. 6 of Best Things to Do in Iceland

Seljalandsfoss

7.6
4.7/5
93 reviews
Seljalandsfoss has a drop of approx. 60m, with water sourced from glacial meltwater. The waterfall's unique feature is a natural recessed path at the base of the cliff, where visitors can walk behind the water curtain to experience the roar of the cascading water and the surrounding mist up close. Looking out from behind the curtain, the view of the distant fields and horizon through the splashing water offers a unique and picturesque perspective, making it a favorite spot for photography enthusiasts. Sunset is an ideal time to capture the view from behind the curtain, as the warm light of the setting sun shines through the water from the west, creating exceptionally rich layers of light and shadow. When walking along the path, be mindful of the slippery rocks underfoot. The dense mist can also wet your clothing and electronic devices, so it is necessary to prepare waterproof gear in advance.Rangarthing eystra · 31.5km from Hella

Kerid Crater was formed by a volcanic eruption 6,500 years ago, and was later filled by rainwater to form this oval-shaped crater lake with a depth of approx. 55 m and a diameter of 170–270 m. Due to the absorption of minerals from the surrounding soil, the lake water has an eerie, deep green color, making it one of the three most famous crater lakes in the world. A walking path has been built around the lake for visitors to explore.Grimsnes- og Grafningshreppur · 33.2km from Hella

Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is located in Grindavik on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland. It is a geothermal hot spring formed by volcanic lava. The water temperature is about 37-39 degrees Celsius. The lake water is rich in minerals such as silicon and sulfur, making it appear faint blue. Hot spring experience The Blue Lagoon has now become a symbol of Iceland. Many people who come to Iceland will choose to take a good bath here. Volcanic mud mask Don't forget to apply some silica mud on your face as a mask when taking a hot spring bath. The silica mud here is volcanic mud, which contains many minerals. Sauna In addition, you can also go to the sauna on the shore to steam for a while, and then come out to continue soaking. If it snows, it feels very unusual to immerse your body in warm water and look up at the white snow flying all over the sky.Iceland · Grindavik

Skógafoss

4.8/5
36 reviews
Skógafoss is located on the south coast of Iceland. The Skógá River cascades down from the top of a cliff approx. 60 m high and 25 m wide, forming an almost continuous curtain of water. This cliff is a remnant of Iceland's ancient coastline—as the coastline has retreated southward over thousands of years, the former coastal cliff was left inland, and the waterfall now plunges directly from the edge of this cliff. The area in front of the waterfall is filled with mist year-round, and on sunny days, you can often see a single or even a double rainbow; if you walk to the base of the waterfall, you will get soaked by the mist. On the east side of the waterfall, there is a zigzagging staircase trail leading to the top of the cliff, where you can overlook the entire waterfall and the distant south coast plains. There is also an ancient Norse legend about this waterfall: it is said that in the early days, someone hid a chest of gold treasure behind the waterfall. After rumors of the treasure spread, treasure hunters came in an endless stream, and later, someone actually found the ring of the chest here. This ring is now kept in the nearby Skógar Museum, and the legend of the treasure has been passed down to this day, becoming part of the waterfall's unique cultural charm.Rangarthing eystra · 55km from Hella

Golden Circle

Golden Circleis a classic, iconic tourist route in Iceland that connects three natural and historical landmarks northeast of Reykjavik into a small loop that most travelers can complete in one day. Thingvellir National Park is situated on the rift valley at the boundary of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, serving as both the site of Iceland's ancient parliament and a place where you can walk along trails between the fissures to intuitively experience the geological wonder of the two plates slowly drifting apart; in the Haukadalur geothermal valley, Geysir is the source of the English word "geyser," while its neighbor, Strokkur, is more active today, sending scalding columns of water into the air every few minutes; and Gullfoss waterfall concludes the itinerary with its majestic two-tiered cascade and canyon scenery. Each of the three stops offers something unique, allowing you to take in geology, geothermal activity, and water features all in one day, making it the perfect introductory route for experiencing the essence of Iceland's nature and history.Blaskogabyggd · 53.2km from Hella
Urridafoss Waterfall

Urridafoss Waterfall

3.2
Urridafoss Waterfall is a wide, terraced waterfall on the Þjórsá River in Iceland. In terms of flow rate, it is the largest waterfall in Iceland and the second largest in Europe. Although the drop is only approx. 6–10m, hundreds of cubic meters of water surge over the lava terrace, which is over 100m wide, every second. It churns and roars at the edge of the Þjórsárhraun lava field with magnificent power and a thunderous sound. Compared to well-known waterfalls like Gullfoss, it receives fewer tourists and has a quieter atmosphere, making it an excellent place to experience the power of Iceland's glacial meltwater. The sight of ice accumulating downstream in the fall and winter, and the breaking and rushing of melting ice in the spring, is equally spectacular. During the season when salmon swim upstream, you can also witness the natural wonder of fish leaping through the rapids. Located near Route 1, it is a hidden waterfall gem worth stopping for on a journey through southern Iceland.Floahreppur · 16.9km from Hella

There are many volcanoes in Iceland, and this one is relatively famous. You can hike around the entire crater. In addition, you can take the stairs directly to the lake in the crater. The water is very clear and typical volcanic ash landforms can be seen around it.

As a landmark hot spring in Iceland, it's definitely worth a visit. The colors are truly unique, and the scenery is beautiful. Soaking in the hot spring while looking at the volcano and snow-capped mountains, and enjoying a cocktail is very relaxing.

The Forest Falls is one of the many waterfalls in Iceland. The scenery is very beautiful. When we arrived, the weather was super good. The water vapor from the waterfall drew a particularly beautiful rainbow under the sunlight, which was very impressive.

Gullfoss is one of the three famous waterfalls in Iceland. You can hear the rumbling sound of rushing water in the valley from a distance. When you get closer, you can feel the spectacular scenery of the whole waterfall. The rapid water flows down with a drop of about 50 meters. The waterfall is like a rolling torrent, roaring.
