Universidad Laboral
Universidad Laboral is a large, comprehensive cultural and educational center located in the suburbs of Gijón/Xixón, Asturias, Spain, with a unique historical span and evolution of uses. Construction began in the mid-20th century, starting in 1946 and completed around 1955. This magnificent complex served as a "Labor University" focused on vocational education, training technical and professional personnel for society while also fulfilling its social mission of caring for the children of miners. Today, this building in the Cabueñes district is not only one of the most important buildings in Asturias but is also officially listed as a protected cultural heritage building in Spain. After restoration and reuse in the early 21st century, the original campus has been gradually transformed into a multifunctional cultural and artistic complex. Elogio del Horizonte
Elogio del Horizonte is a highly symbolic modern sculpture. Designed by Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida, it is situated on the Cerro de Santa Catalina, a scenic hill overlooking the Cantabrian Sea. The sculpture is made of solid concrete, with an abstract and evocative form that resembles two vertical pillars supporting an arc, as if opening its arms to embrace the sky and the sea. As you approach the sculpture, you are first greeted by the sea breeze and the deep blue expanse of the ocean. The lawn beneath the sculpture is tranquil, with the rocky coastline extending behind it. Standing inside the structure feels like being in a space that "embraces" both the sea and the sky. Even more magical is that when you stand quietly in the center of the sculpture's "belly," the sounds of waves crashing against the shore and the wind passing through the structure are amplified, creating a unique audiovisual experience.Gijon · 1.9km from downtown

I love visiting the Laboral, it has so much to offer. Formally one of Franco’s orphanages this spectacular space has a theatre school, gallery, cafe and a stunning church. The gallery has excellent exhibitions running throughout the year. Also worth checking for live events that happen from time to time. A visit to the top of the main tower is also recommended giving excellent views over Gijon.
