Golden Circle
No. 10 of Best Things to Do in Iceland

Golden Circle

7.1
4.4/5
25 reviews

Golden Circleis a classic, iconic tourist route in Iceland that connects three natural and historical landmarks northeast of Reykjavik into a small loop that most travelers can complete in one day. Thingvellir National Park is situated on the rift valley at the boundary of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, serving as both the site of Iceland's ancient parliament and a place where you can walk along trails between the fissures to intuitively experience the geological wonder of the two plates slowly drifting apart; in the Haukadalur geothermal valley, Geysir is the source of the English word "geyser," while its neighbor, Strokkur, is more active today, sending scalding columns of water into the air every few minutes; and Gullfoss waterfall concludes the itinerary with its majestic two-tiered cascade and canyon scenery. Each of the three stops offers something unique, allowing you to take in geology, geothermal activity, and water features all in one day, making it the perfect introductory route for experiencing the essence of Iceland's nature and history.

The Secret Lagoon is located in the village of Fludir in the Golden Circle area. The historic environment remains natural and simple, offering a unique and authentic experience. The pool is surrounded by several hot springs, including a small geyser that provides fresh warm water to the pool, maintaining a temperature of 38–40°C year-round. In winter, the northern lights are often visible in the area, and you can relax in the warm waters surrounded by earth's steam while enjoying a spectacular light show. The facility adjacent to the hot spring offers brand-new amenities, including showers, a bar, and a dining area.

Geysir

Geysir

6.7
4.7/5
156 reviews

Geysiris located in the Haukadalur geothermal valley in southwestern Iceland and is an important stop on the Golden Circle route. The English word "geyser" originates from the Great Geysir here. Historically, the Great Geysir has erupted with boiling water columns reaching tens of meters high, but nowadays it is mostly quiet and dormant, rarely erupting. The real star is Strokkur, located just a short distance to the south, which erupts every few to 10 minutes. The azure water first churns in the center of the vent, forming a blue bubble, and in the next second, it bursts open with a roar, sending a water column shooting into the air. It usually reaches over 10 m high, and sometimes erupts 2 or 3 times in succession. The entire eruption lasts only a few seconds, so when you see the water surface bubble up, hold your breath and raise your camera. If you stand here patiently for a while, you will almost certainly be able to catch several of Strokkur's performances in a row.

Haukadalur Geothermal Area

Haukadalur Geothermal Area

6.6

Haukadalur Geothermal Area is situated in a valley in southern Iceland and is a popular stop on the classic Golden Circle route, as well as a natural classroom for experiencing Iceland's geothermal activity up close. The entire valley is dotted with dozens of hot springs, mud pools, and fumaroles, with white steam rising year-round and the air filled with the sulfur scent unique to geothermal areas. The star here is the Strokkur geyser, which erupts every few minutes. Boiling water columns usually shoot up to over 10 m high, and sometimes reach even higher, up to dozens of meters. Before an eruption, the water in the pool churns violently and slowly rises into a bubble, then bursts open with a roar, sending water splashing everywhere. Standing by the railing and patiently waiting for an eruption is a highlight of the geothermal area that is worth setting aside time for.

Gullfoss Falls

4.8/5
249 reviews

As one of the must-see attractions in Iceland, the Golden Falls have a reason to do their part. The river flows straight down from a height of 32 meters and is divided into two levels. From a distance, it looks like two rainbows rushing along the Great Rift Valley. The scene is very spectacular. After a heavy rain, you can also see a large rainbow across the waterfall. A monument was erected next to the waterfall in memory of a civilian woman.

Hrunamannahreppur · 23.5km from Fludir
Bruarfoss Waterfall

Bruarfoss Waterfall

4.8

Tiffany Blue Waterfall is located in southern Iceland and is renowned for its rare blue-green water, named for its resemblance to the color Tiffany Blue. The water originates from Langjökull Glacier meltwater. Fine rock powder suspended in the meltwater gives the water a unique blue luster when refracted by sunlight, and the dark basalt riverbed further enhances this visual effect. The waterfall is approx. 10m wide and formed by the convergence of multiple streams. Some sections have rapid currents, and the surrounding area is covered with tundra vegetation and volcanic rock landscapes. Along the way, you can pass by many small streams and waterfalls. The entire route travels through typical Icelandic tundra landscapes and is one of the representative routes for experiencing the highland landscapes of southern Iceland.

Kerid Crater
No. 15 of Best Things to Do in Iceland

Kerid Crater

6.6
4.9/5
25 reviews

Kerid Crater was formed by a volcanic eruption 6,500 years ago, and was later filled by rainwater to form this oval-shaped crater lake with a depth of approx. 55 m and a diameter of 170–270 m. Due to the absorption of minerals from the surrounding soil, the lake water has an eerie, deep green color, making it one of the three most famous crater lakes in the world. A walking path has been built around the lake for visitors to explore.

Grimsnes- og Grafningshreppur · 29.3km from Fludir
Faxafoss

Faxafoss

3.2

Faxafoss is located on the Tungufljót River in southwestern Iceland and is a waterfall view on the Golden Circle route known for its tranquility and openness. The waterfall is approx. 7m high and nearly 90m wide, with wide, cascading water spreading across the broad riverbed, creating a gentle and expansive appearance. It is located very close to the spectacular Gullfoss waterfall but has a completely different style, and is often called "Little Gullfoss." Every fall, when salmon swim upstream, you can observe the rare sight of salmon leaping vigorously at the dedicated fish ladder next to the waterfall, making it a rare moment of natural interaction during a Golden Circle tour. After freezing in winter, the waterfall takes on a unique, ice-sculpted appearance, offering different scenery throughout the year. Because there are relatively few tourists, the atmosphere is quiet and leisurely, making it an ideal stop on the Golden Circle route.

Strokkur Geyser

4.1
5.0/5
3 reviews

Strokkur Geyser is located in the famous Haukadalur geothermal area in southern Iceland and is the most active geyser in the region. Unlike the nearby Geysir, which has largely ceased activity, Strokkur erupts regularly every few minutes, with water columns typically reaching 15–40 m in height. The moment of eruption is spectacular, with a deafening roar and billowing steam. Before the eruption, a blue bubble of water at the vent gradually swells and then suddenly bursts, creating an impressive natural spectacle. The surrounding area is dotted with hot springs, mud pots, and colorful mineral deposits, fully showcasing the diverse forms of geothermal activity in Iceland and making it one of the core attractions on the Golden Circle route in Iceland.

Thingvellir National Park

6.5
4.9/5
124 reviews

Thingvellir National Park National Park is located approximately 45 km east of Reykjavik and is a key landmark of both historical and geological significance in Iceland. In 930 AD, Iceland's first national parliament was established here. It is one of the longest-running parliamentary institutions known in the world, and today it remains a venue for important national celebrations for Icelanders. The park is situated at the junction of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. The great rift clearly displays the boundary between the two continental plates, allowing visitors to intuitively experience the landscape formed by crustal rifting. In 2004, Thingvellir National Park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its dual historical and geological value. Additionally, it is also widely known among fans as a filming location for the American TV series "Game of Thrones".

Gullfoss is one of the three famous waterfalls in Iceland. You can hear the rumbling sound of rushing water in the valley from a distance. When you get closer, you can feel the spectacular scenery of the whole waterfall. The rapid water flows down with a drop of about 50 meters. The waterfall is like a rolling torrent, roaring.
