The guide provided lots of history and detail including many exact dates. Pacing was good, with some times to sit down. Her accent was a little hard to follow, requiring concentration on what she was saying, but I got 95 percent of her content. She was a little bashful and darted off at the end without giving an opportunity to receive a deserved tip.

Our tour guide, Yan Ran, was fantastic! I'd never been to the Simatai Great Wall before, and this time, when I visited Gubei Water Town and learned that the Great Wall could be visited at night, I chose to take the cable car after dark to enjoy the night view. Also, since I had no one to climb the Great Wall with during the day… it was definitely worth the trip! The cable car costs 120 yuan round trip (hotel discount price), and the one-way trip takes about five or six minutes. Only two short sections are open, and it's about a ten-minute walk after getting off the cable car. Walking while enjoying the night view would take even longer. From the top, Gubei Water Town really does look like a turtle's shape, and the musical fountain is quite clear! Although only two sections of the Great Wall are open, we weren't disappointed because it was really cold up there, and we didn't want to climb the Great Wall anyway; we just enjoyed the view quietly. The viewing binoculars are free to use!
