Reviews: Abel Tasman Kayaks: 1 Day Freedom Kayak Rental
Guest User2026-02-13
The day started with a good explanation of how to use the kayak. It's great that it has a large waterproof storage compartment, perfect for a backpack with lunch. Then we were taken to the water, and after a brief instruction session, we were allowed to go completely independently. The map we received was helpful for navigating the water. A fun addition was spotting seals.

Fantastic day trip! We walked first, which gave us plenty of time to get to the starting point. We took a quick dip, grabbed a delicious sandwich for lunch (plus banana bread and hot drinks!), and then enjoyed a wonderful boat trip at a relaxed pace past sea lions and cormorants 😍 absolutely beautiful!

The kayak was super fun. Emma was a blast, funny and educational, and she sent us several pics of us that she took. The trek back was lovely.

We were quite lucky and had a private tour. Our guide was Connor and it was such an amazing day! He told us a lot about the history and the nature and spending time with him made the day so much more fun :) we explored together beautiful lagoons and he took some cool pictures. Overall it was one of the best days we’ve had in NZ :)

The combination of hiking in the morning and sailing in the afternoon is fantastic. You don't need to be in great shape for the hike, but be prepared for a brisk pace of 3-4 hours. The scenery and views are breathtaking – it's no wonder it's one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the world. The boat trip is very relaxing. The captain shares a lot of interesting information about Abel Tasman and many entertaining stories. Coffee and tea are free on board. You can buy chips and soft drinks. Both the briefing in the parking lot in the morning and the transfer in the afternoon went smoothly.
