I had just stepped out of Kuala Lumpur airport, hit by a wave of heat, but my phone had no signal.

I highly recommend buying a Tripcom phone for your vacation. I've used it before, and it's incredibly affordable! It offers uninterrupted connection with coverage in multiple countries. My Russian carriers definitely don't offer this kind of price. I highly recommend it!
