I had just stepped out of Kuala Lumpur airport, hit by a wave of heat, but my phone had no signal.
I remembered the eSIM I'd hastily bought before leaving—it only cost a few dozen ringgit, installation took five minutes, and it was a 0.5GB daily Malaysian data package. To be honest, I was a little unsure: was it reliable? After all, it didn't require a SIM card, and I couldn't see or touch it.
But when I landed and turned on my phone, as soon as it connected to the local network, WeChat buzzed. For the next 24 hours, that 0.5GB made my journey incredibly reassuring:
I used Google Maps in Petaling Street to find the most authentic Bak Kut Teh, the navigation was as accurate as a local guide; at Merdeka Square, I looked up the historical building backgrounds on my phone, reading as I walked; I posted on WeChat Moments to let everyone know I arrived safely, and video-chatted with family for a few seconds—those "You just arrived? Great!" moments.
The next afternoon, my data ran out, and a notification popped up while I was sitting in a cafe using Wi-Fi to write my travelogue.
Looking back, that 0.5GB was perfectly timed. No waste, no anxiety, no hassle—available immediately upon arrival, and used as soon as needed. The hassle of searching for counters, exchanging cards, and storing physical SIM cards at airports is now completely gone.

I used an eSIM for my trip from Thailand to Malaysia. It was much more convenient and faster than searching for local SIM cards at airports.
Key points:
Activation: The main advantage is that you can set up your profile before arriving in the country. As soon as the plane landed, the internet was ready.
Connection quality: I was pleased with the coverage in both countries – excellent reception everywhere, high speeds, without any dips in popular tourist spots and at train stations.
Tethering: A major bonus is that you can share your internet connection (Hotspot) with other devices. I connected my laptop easily, and the connection remained stable.
A caveat in Malaysia: Upon entering Malaysia, my phone struggled to find a network. I had to go into settings and wait a couple of minutes for it to automatically connect to a local carrier. After that, I had no further issues. Bottom line: I recommend it for those who value comfort. The connection is stable, activation is simple, and the ability to share internet makes this option indispensable.
