Our first day in Dali was windy and rainy. Due to Ctrip's negligence, the airport pickup was delayed, casting a shadow over our trip.
I was worried the rain would completely ruin our plans for the next day, but to my surprise, it stopped after we got on the bus, instantly brightening our mood! Lao Jia first took us to Dali Old Town to eat the most authentic Ersi rice noodles (absolutely amazing!), and then patiently accompanied us to the Old Town bus station to buy bus tickets from Dali to Lijiang for the day after tomorrow. Then our day's itinerary officially began.
We headed north from the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple to Xizhou Town. The journey was filled with pleasant conversation. Old Jia, a local of Dali, had a deep understanding of the local culture and customs. He took us on a unique tour of Xizhou's various attractions, focusing on immersing us in the lives of the Bai people. We visited their homes, watched the making of local delicacies like milk fan (乳扇), and tasted the most authentic milk fan and Xizhou baba (癑癑). He also introduced us to the characteristics of Bai dwellings. The horse-drawn carriage route was meticulously designed, gradually unfolding through fields, houses, and seascapes – an experience I don't think you can get on a typical group tour. After lunch, we toured the eastern coastline. The intermittent rain and sunshine that day allowed even a photography novice like me to take some excellent photos. Old Jia also gave me guidance on photography, which I greatly benefited from. The music he chose was definitely one of the selling points – perfectly suited to the occasion and pleasant to the mood.
For me, this tour felt more like the company of a friend, with absolutely no commercial atmosphere.
A trip led to a new friend; what started as a hastily booked day trip to fill a gap in my itinerary turned out to be the most unforgettable memory of my Yunnan trip!
