Giza Necropolis

9.5
4.7/5
709 reviews

The Giza Necropolis is not a single pyramid, but a collective term for a group of pyramids standing on the Giza Plateau, mostly built during the Fourth Dynasty of ancient Egypt around 2600 to 2500 BCE. The three great pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure are aligned from northeast to southwest, interspersed with queen pyramids and funerary structures, while the Great Sphinx lies to the east. Among the seven wonders of the ancient world, this necropolis is the only one that remains today. As for the alignment of the three pyramids, some speculate it corresponds to the three stars of Orion's Belt—though merely a conjecture, it adds a layer of imagination to the stone giants amidst the yellow sands. Upon entering the attraction, the first sight that greets travelers is usually the Pyramid of Khufu, whose massive scale far surpasses the other two. The remaining height of the pyramid is approx. 140 m. Today, travelers enter the pyramid through a passage on one side of its base, ascending along a dimly lit, low corridor to reach the pharaoh's granite burial chamber. Photography is prohibited inside the pyramid, and the narrow, stuffy passage poses a significant physical challenge. Nearby, the Pyramid of Khafre appears remarkably intact from a distance due to the preserved section of ancient limestone casing at its apex. Inside, the burial chamber is long empty, with only a vacant sarcophagus lying silently within. The smallest of the three, the Pyramid of Menkaure, features a low entrance—just a few stone steps lead into a downward-sloping passage. During your visit, consider heading to the panoramic attraction on the south side of the pyramid complex to capture all three pyramids in a single frame. The long-standing camel ride experience here is also worth trying—gazing back at the pyramids from the desert offers a quintessential view of this ancient plateau.

Grand Egyptian Museum

4.7/5
264 reviews

The Grand Egyptian Museum is located on the Giza Plateau, approximately two km from the pyramid complex. After over two decades of preparation and construction, it officially opened fully in November 2025. Designed by Heneghan Peng Architects, the museum's layout features several visual axes echoing the three pyramids. Its semi-translucent alabaster facade, adorned with triangular patterns, glows with warm desert-like tones under daylight and illuminates at night, resembling a massive stone carved from the sea of sand—earning it the nickname "the fourth pyramid of Egypt." The museum houses over 100,000 artifacts spanning from the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman era. Upon entering the grand hall, travelers are greeted by the towering granite statue of Ramses II, dating back over 3,000 years. In the entrance courtyard, an obelisk is suspended mid-air, allowing passage beneath. Flanking the six-tiered central staircase are dozens of statues of pharaohs and queens, leading upward to a glass wall framing the distant pyramids—a classic photo spot. The Tutankhamun gallery is the highlight, showcasing over 5,000 burial treasures, with the golden mask displayed centrally. The restored Khufu Solar Boat also resides here. A dedicated children's museum offers an engaging introduction to ancient Egyptian civilization. Given the vast scale and dense attractions, allocate at least half a day: start with the staircase's pyramid vista, then explore the Tutankhamun gallery and solar boat exhibit. At dusk, the alabaster facade shimmers under sunset hues—a photo moment many travelers plan for.

Valley of the Kings

9
4.4/5
444 reviews

The Valley of the Kings lies on the west bank of the Nile in Luxor, Egypt, and was the royal resting place of ancient Egypt's New Kingdom. Over nearly five hundred years, from the Eighteenth Dynasty to the Twentieth Dynasty, pharaohs and nobles were buried in tombs cut into the cliffs; more than sixty tombs have been discovered to date, arranged under "KV" numbers, with the royal tombs mainly clustered in the East Valley, while the West Valley is more secluded. The tomb murals are the real highlight here: the corridors and the walls and ceilings of the burial chambers are covered with scenes from religious texts such as the Book of the Dead and the Book of the Underworld, and the pigments remain vivid after more than three thousand years. Tutankhamun's tomb became famous after archaeologist Howard Carter discovered a large trove of burial treasures there in 1922, and the pharaoh's mummy still rests in a temperature-controlled glass display case in the burial chamber; the tomb of Ramesses III is grand in scale with well-preserved painted decoration; the ceiling of the tomb of Ramesses VI depicts the sky goddess Nut stretching across the entire chamber; and the painted corridor of the tomb of Seti I is especially exquisite. Visiting tips: there is almost no shade in the valley, and afternoons are hot, so going in the early morning is more comfortable; a small electric shuttle runs between the entrance and the main cluster of tombs, saving you the walk. Most tomb entrances are inconspicuous openings in the cliffs, lined up along the path; slow down and take note of the hieroglyphs and images of the gods in the murals, and you will notice far more detail. Visitors with plenty of energy can also follow the ridge path up for a panoramic view over the whole valley; the peak of Al-Qurn above, shaped like a natural pyramid, is one of the reasons the ancient Egyptians regarded this valley as a sacred place.

Luxor Temple

8.7
4.5/5
245 reviews

Luxor Temple is located on the east bank of the Nile in the city of Luxor, forming a north-south counterpart to Karnak Temple. It was a worship site built during the New Kingdom period of ancient Egypt for the "Theban Triad"—Amun, Mut, and Khonsu. In ancient Egyptian, it was called the "Southern Sanctuary" and is often referred to as the "Southern Harem of Amun." The main structure of the temple was constructed by Pharaoh Amenhotep III of the 18th Dynasty, while the pylon, forecourt, colossi, and obelisks at the entrance were added by Ramses II. Later pharaohs like Tutankhamun continued to add reliefs, and during the time of Alexander the Great, the rear sanctuary was rebuilt. A single temple thus layers over a thousand years of construction history. At the entrance still stands a granite obelisk of Ramses II, while its paired counterpart crossed the ocean as early as the 19th century and now stands in Paris's Place de la Concorde. The seated statue of the pharaoh in front of the pylon, the grand colonnade, and the sun court of Amenhotep III unfold layer by layer. The reliefs on the colonnade walls vividly depict the procession of the Opet Festival—during the Nile flood season in ancient Egypt, the statue of Amun was ceremoniously transported from Karnak Temple to here. The avenue of sphinxes in front of the temple gate was precisely the sacred path for this ritual. After years of archaeological restoration, this nearly three km-long avenue has been reconnected, and today, visitors can walk the round-trip route between this temple and Karnak Temple. In one corner of the temple stands a still-functioning mosque built atop the ancient pillars, sharing the same courtyard with the pharaonic-era pylon. When illuminated at night, the pillars, colossi, and minaret form a highly recognizable nightscape in Luxor.

Karnak

8.6
4.6/5
522 reviews

Karnak is located in Luxor on the east bank of the Nile. It is a massive ancient Egyptian temple complex and the core religious area of the ancient city of Thebes. Construction of the entire complex began during the Middle Kingdom (around 2000 BC) and continued through the New Kingdom and into the Ptolemaic period. About thirty pharaohs successively participated in its expansion and decoration, with construction lasting nearly two thousand years—an exceptionally long building period rarely seen in ancient human architecture. The complex is divided by enclosure walls into several main areas, of which the larger and better-preserved part is dedicated to Amun-Ra, the chief of the Theban gods; the northern area is dedicated to the war god Montu, and the southern area to the goddess Mut—companion of Amun-Ra, symbolized by the vulture. Numerous small temples and chapels are also scattered among the areas. Lining the processional way leading to the temple pylons are ram-headed sphinx statues; this ceremonial road once extended all the way to Luxor Temple to the south, a total distance of about 3 km, and was an important religious processional route in ancient Thebes. The core structure of the temple is the Hypostyle Hall, covering several thousand square meters and supported by more than a hundred massive stone columns, with the central colonnade reaching over twenty meters in height, its shafts covered with reliefs and painted decoration. Light enters the hall through high windows, falling among the dense forest of columns and creating a solemn and deeply atmospheric sense of space—one of the most impressive sights of Karnak. The complex also contains a large obelisk erected by Queen Hatshepsut and a sacred lake used for ritual purification. Many murals, reliefs, and statues record the military campaigns and ritual scenes of successive pharaohs, making them important physical materials for understanding ancient Egyptian religion and royal culture. Due to their great age, as well as human and natural erosion, many parts of the temple were once severely damaged. Through long-term archaeological excavation and restoration, large numbers of stone elements have been repositioned and reassembled, revealing the appearance seen today. When visiting, you can enter through the massive pylon at the entrance and follow the central axis past the Hypostyle Hall, the obelisk, and the sacred lake in turn, taking note of the well-preserved painted reliefs on the column capitals and walls.

The Great Pyramid of Giza

4.7/5
775 reviews

The Great Pyramid of Giza, built as the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu during the Fourth Dynasty of ancient Egypt, is one of the larger and taller Egyptian pyramids. This pyramid was constructed approx. 2580 BCE. It is not only a symbol of Egypt but also the oldest structure among the seven wonders of the ancient world. Pyramids exterior To visit here, you must first enter the Giza pyramid complex. Upon entering, the first sight is this pyramid, which remains one of the best-preserved to date.Sponsored Ads, although the top has weathered over time, it remains a massive structure equivalent to a 40-story building. From a distance,Sponsored AdsEach side forms an isosceles triangle, and the entire pyramid is constructed with 2.3 million massive stone blocks. Pyramids interior Of course, besides admiring its massive exterior, travelers can also explore the interior. Although ventilation has been installed inside the pyramid, the narrow burial passages remain quite stuffy, so those in poor health are advised to proceed with caution. Sponsored AdsThe tomb entrance is at a height of 18 m above the ground, facing the Big Dipper. Photography is prohibited inside, and the passageway is illuminated by lights. After entering, stepping on the steep wooden stairs, you can imagine ancient Egyptians carrying the pharaoh's sarcophagus upward along the passageway to place it inSponsored Adsin the secret chamber. Walking step by step along the corridor inside the pyramid, your footsteps grow heavier, and the air feels increasingly stifling, until you reach the pharaoh's secret chamber. The chamber is a small room built of granite, standing 42.28 m vertically above the ground. For many years, people believed the pyramid concealed the pharaoh's treasures and mummy. But when archaeologists entered in 1881, they found only an empty sarcophagus in the central burial chamber. In the pharaoh's chamber, an open dark red granite sarcophagus can be seen placed in the center. The pharaoh's treasures were long ago looted, leaving only this empty coffin that was too heavy to move. After the exploration, walk slowly back along the original path. Emerging from the dark, enclosed passageway and returning to the open, bright desert landscape, the stark contrast in light and space creates a wondrous feeling of having lived through another lifetime, allowing you to truly grasp the awe and vicissitudes of this thousand-year-old stone miracle.

It must be in everyone’s bucket list to visit those pyramids and the sphinx as the very mention of those gives vibes of ancient history/technology/civilization/pharos and a whole lot of mysteries surrounding that Giza Necropolis. Once thee the site doesn’t disappoint anyone as there is something for each one there. There are carious options for the visit depending upon your budget and schedule.

Some time ago, a good friend of mine advised me to visit the Grand Egyptian Museum, so I went today, and it was a truly fantastic experience. First of all, it is a very modern space, large enough to showcase the full might of Egyptian civilization. All the exhibits are well-organized, allowing you to see everything in a very comfortable manner. The only thing that could be improved is the waiting area for people who arrive before the museum opens, as there is no comfortable space for them to wait, and they simply stand behind the fence along the road. I was among the people who arrived right before the opening at 8:30, and I spent more than four hours in the museum. After you are tired and have finished all the exhibitions, you can have lunch in one of the good restaurants inside near the main entrance.

Karnak Temple, located on the east bank of the Solo River in Luxor, Egypt, is the world's largest ancient temple complex, dedicated to the sun god Amun-Ra. The most spectacular part is the Great Hypostyle Hall, with its 134 massive sandstone columns. Standing beneath them is a truly awe-inspiring experience, as if stepping back in time. To explore, simply follow the central axis. Inside, there's also the Scarab Stele; it's said that turning it seven times clockwise brings good luck. The Hatshepsut Obelisk is the tallest surviving obelisk in Egypt. The Avenue of the Rams leads directly to Luxor Temple. Karnak Temple is undoubtedly one of the must-see attractions for any traveler to Egypt.

The Abu Simbel temples, part of the Nubian archaeological site stretching from Abu Simbel to Philae, are located in Nubia, the southernmost region of Egypt, 280 kilometers north of Aswan, a major tourist destination. Construction began during the reign of Ramses II and was completed around 1233 BC. In 1960, the Egyptian government decided to build a dam in the Aswan area. To protect the Abu Simbel temples and other ancient sites before rising water levels, an international construction team comprised of Egyptians, Germans, French, Italians, and Swedish experts officially began work in 1963. The project was completed in September 1968 at a cost of US$36 million. The Abu Simbel temples are cave temples carved from sandstone mountains, consisting of a main temple and smaller temples. The main temple contains four statues of Pharaoh Ramses II from the New Kingdom period. The smaller temple is dedicated to the goddess Hathor and Queen Nefertari. Of the six statues, four depict Ramses II and two of Nefertari are arranged alternately. The Abu Simbel temples are entirely carved into the cliff face on the west bank of the Nile, approximately 33 meters high, 38 meters wide, and 65 meters deep. Originally intended to honor the three main gods Amun, Ra, and Ptah, the Abu Simbel temples actually served only one true god—Ramses himself. The numerous sculptural scenes within the Abu Simbel temples provide later generations with rich depictions of ancient production and daily life, which are of great value for understanding the history, society, and culture of ancient Egypt.

At that time, on the way from Luxor to Hurghada, I began to miss the Nile River infinitely. Every time I saw the river, I couldn't help but marvel in my heart. It was just a natural scenery, but it had an unreal beauty, flat and vast. I always lived in southern China and always thought that rivers came from valleys, magnificent or winding, with mountains on both sides, but the Nile River was still flat on both sides. I think there would be no Egypt without the Nile River. In such a hot and dry place that is not suitable for living, it should be this river that can pass through thousands of years without changing and keep people. Now, I have been away from Egypt for more than ten days. The most frequent flash in my memory is still the Nile River. Its beauty seems to allow anything to happen. I suddenly understand Agatha very much. If you face such a miracle every day, it is not surprising that you can write any story. Finally, I actually want to say that the Old Falls Hotel is worth staying (if the budget allows, but the afternoon tea is very bad, so be careful.
