Munich Residence

The Munich Residence is located in the heart of Munich's old town, serving as the residence and power center for the dukes, electors, and kings of the Wittelsbach family from the early 16th century until 1918. After centuries of continuous expansion, it evolved from a castle into a large palace complex with ten courtyards and hundreds of halls. The king's building, the old palace, and the banquet hall face different directions, showcasing overlapping styles of Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassicism. Today, it is open to the public primarily as the Residence Museum, the Treasury, and the Cuvilliés Theatre. The palace offers a dense concentration of highlights: the antiquities gallery, built in the late 16th century, is the oldest hall here. Stretching over 60 m long with its vaulted ceiling covered in frescoes, it initially displayed the duke's collection of ancient Roman statues and later served as a royal banquet hall for centuries, standing as a representative Renaissance hall north of the Alps. The treasury houses over a thousand royal treasures of the Wittelsbach dynasty, including crowns and scepters. The Cuvilliés Theatre is one of Europe's best-preserved Rococo court theaters, with its ornate tiered loggias. Mozart's opera "Idomeneo" premiered here in 1781, and concerts are still frequently held. During the visit, also watch for the shell-decorated grotto courtyard and the ancestral gallery lined with family portraits—both located along the route to the antiquities gallery and easy to miss if not paying attention. The noses of the bronze lions in front of the gate have been polished shiny by travelers, as local legend says rubbing them brings good luck—worth a try when passing by. The palace was severely damaged in World War II, and most of the exquisite halls seen today were meticulously restored to their original postwar state. The entire tour route is quite long, so allocating most of a day is recommended for a thorough visit. After exploring, you can take a leisurely stroll in the adjacent court garden.Munich · 17.3km from Dachau

Nymphenburg Palace

7.2
4.4/5
305 reviews
Nymphenburg Palace is located in the western suburbs of Munich, serving as the summer residence for successive rulers of the Wittelsbach dynasty and an important representative of German Baroque palace and garden art. The palace's broad facade stretches gracefully, with a straight canal extending in front where swans glide year-round—a scene often regarded as one of Munich's classic images. Highlights inside the palace include the lavishly decorated Stone Hall, once the grand venue for royal celebrations, where ceiling frescoes and chandeliers complement each other; the "Gallery of Beauties," commissioned by Ludwig I and lined with over thirty portraits of 19th-century Munich beauties; and the queen's bedchamber where the "Fairy Tale King" Ludwig II was born. The museum in the converted former stables displays royal carriages and sledges, with Ludwig II's gilded carriage being particularly striking, alongside porcelain from the Nymphenburg royal manufactory. The palace gardens transition from French geometric flower beds to English landscape woodlands, dotted with pavilions like the Amalienburg, Badenburg, and Pagodenburg: the pink-walled Amalienburg is a delicate Rococo hunting lodge, with its Mirror Hall being especially notable, while the Pagodenburg was a retreat for the royal family's tea parties and summer relaxation. These garden pavilions are spaced far apart, requiring ample time for walking tours; many travelers enjoy ending their visit by strolling back along the canal to watch the swans.Munich · 12.7km from Dachau

Marienplatz

Marienplatz is the central square of Munich's old town. Since the founding of Munich in 1158, it has been the city's main square. The old and new town halls stand on the north and east sides of the square respectively, making it the true "urban living room" of Munich. Below the square is an important hub where suburban trains and subways intersect. Most attractions in the old town are within walking distance from here, and many travelers choose Marienplatz as the starting point for their Munich visit. When FC Bayern Munich wins championships, the team traditionally waves to fans on the square from the town hall balcony. At the center of the square stands the Marian column erected in 1638, featuring a golden statue of the Virgin Mary standing on a crescent moon, holding a scepter in her right hand and cradling the infant Jesus in her left. The base of the column is adorned with bronze statuettes of angels subduing mythical beasts at each corner, now serving as the visual focal point of the square. To the north, the new town hall is a dark-spired Gothic Revival building. Its tower houses a glockenspiel that performs daily at 11 am and noon, with upper puppets reenacting a medieval jousting tournament and lower puppets performing the traditional Bavarian coopers' dance. The show concludes with a golden rooster crowing, and the square is often packed with travelers looking up in anticipation before the performance begins. Opposite the town hall entrance lies the Fischbrunnen, a bronze wishing fountain dating back to the Middle Ages. According to local tradition, people wash their wallets in its waters on Ash Wednesday to invite financial luck. To the east, the old town hall boasts elegant spires, harmonizing with the onion-domed Frauenkirche to the northwest. The south tower of the Frauenkirche offers elevator access to its summit, providing a splendid vantage point to overlook the old town's red-tiled roofs and gaze at the distant Alps. Though the square itself is compact, it encapsulates centuries of Munich's history within its surrounding architecture, remaining vibrant at any time of visit.Munich · 17.5km from Dachau

Victuals Market is an open-air market in Munich's Old Town with a history of over 200 years, located right next to Marienplatz. Its name comes from the Latin word for "food". Originally a farmers' market moved from the main square in the early 19th century, it has now evolved into a gourmet market with approx. 140 stalls. Bakeries, cheese stalls, butcher shops, fruit and vegetable stands, flower stalls, and handicraft vendors are arranged in sections, offering seasonal flowers and ingredients from around the world all year round. Many locals frequent the market to buy their daily groceries. In the center of the market stands a blue-and-white striped Maypole, adorned with wooden carvings representing various trades, which is a symbol of Bavarian folklore. The market is also dotted with memorial fountains dedicated to Munich celebrities like comedians Karl Valentin and Liesl Karlstadt. A beer garden is located in the center of the market, where beer is supplied in rotation by 6 major Munich breweries. Freshly shucked oysters at the seafood stalls and freshly squeezed juices at the juice stands are also worth noting.Munich · 17.7km from Dachau

Siegestor

Siegestor is a three-arched, classical-style structure commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria. Modeled after the Arch of Constantine and built from light-colored limestone, it was completed in the mid-19th century and stands approx. 20m high and 24m wide. The bronze sculpture group at the top is a highlight: the goddess "Bavaria" riding a chariot pulled by four lions—the lions are the heraldic symbol of the Wittelsbach dynasty, which ruled the region for centuries. The structure also features multiple layers of reliefs depicting battle scenes and local scenery. Originally built to glorify the army, the structure was severely damaged by air raids during World War II. During post-war reconstruction, it was kept in a simplified form, and the side facing the old town was inscribed with a new dedication: "Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war, reminding of peace," transforming it into a monument that serves as a reminder of peace.Munich · 16.5km from Dachau

New Town Hall stands on the north side of Marienplatz. It is a grand Neo-Gothic building, constructed in phases starting from the second half of the 19th century, and it remains the seat of the city government today. The facade facing the square is adorned with niches and statues, featuring Henry the Lion and successive Bavarian monarchs lined up in sequence. You can take an elevator to the top of the central tower, which is topped by a bronze statue of the Munich Child, the city's symbol. From the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the square and the red-tiled roofs of the Old Town. The highlight of this building is the Glockenspiel in the middle of the tower. When the dozens of bronze bells play a melody, life-sized figures appear in turns on two levels: the upper level recreates the jousting tournament from the 1568 wedding of William V, with the knight in Bavarian blue and white colors emerging victorious; the lower level performs the Cooper's Dance, commemorating the story of coopers dancing in the streets to encourage people to return after the plague in 1517, and the performance concludes with three crows from the golden rooster at the top of the tower.Munich · 17.5km from Dachau

The Munich Residence is one of the most impressive historical attractions in Munich. The palace is beautifully decorated with grand halls, elegant rooms, and detailed artwork that show the wealth and history of the Bavarian royal family. I enjoyed walking through the different sections of the palace, especially the lavish rooms filled with paintings, chandeliers, and antique furniture. The museum was well organized, and there was plenty of information about the history of the building and its former rulers. The peaceful courtyards also provided a nice place to relax during the visit. Overall, the Munich Residence offers a wonderful mix of history, art, and architecture. It is a must-visit for anyone interested in culture and royal history, and I would gladly visit again.

I visited Marienplatz in Munich and really enjoyed the lively atmosphere there. It is the main square of the city, surrounded by beautiful historic buildings and always full of energy. One memorable moment for me was hearing the town hall clock music play at the New Town Hall—it added a charming and unique touch to the whole experience, even though I did not stay for the full show. I also enjoyed walking around the square, watching people, and relaxing at a nearby café. It is a great place to feel the heart of Munich, with many attractions and shopping streets close by. Overall, Marienplatz is a must-visit spot that captures both the history and daily life of the city.

Its predecessor was a traditional farmers' market, which is where its name comes from. As long as you mention food, you can't go wrong here, so it is the stomach of Munich. In addition to selling food, flowers and other items, it also has the largest beer garden in the city.

BMW's headquarters is in Munich. The BMW headquarters building is a very distinctive building, which is said to symbolize the four cylinders of a car engine. BMW also has a huge 4S store nearby, which is said to be the largest in the world. People usually go in to take a look.

The Munich Arc de Triomphe is also a very popular triumphal arch. It is a building built to celebrate victory during the Napoleonic era. The Arc de Triomphe is not very big, but it has a long history. The gate here feels very special.

You haven't truly seen Munich until you've stood in Marienplatz and stared up at the breathtaking New Town Hall . The neo-Gothic architecture is overwhelmingly detailed and beautiful, covered in intricate statues and spires. If you time your visit right, you can watch the famous Glockenspiel clock chimes and mechanical figures dance. The square is always packed with high energy, street performers, and travelers, making it the perfect starting point for exploring the city!

In other words, such a beautiful church was built privately by two brothers (I just want to say that the two brothers are so rich) and used for private churches. Later, under the strong opposition of the general public, we were forced to open to the public, so that we had the privilege to enjoy such a magnificent and beautiful church.

I went to see the city view for 30 minutes with only 3 euros for the student fee!!! It looks like it's 13 floors high because it says 13 og, but it wasn't as hard to walk up as I thought and I got there quickly I went around sunset and it was so beautiful that I was completely lost in thought! It's very narrow and there's a barbed wire fence, but it doesn't really interfere with taking pictures or viewing, and it's nice that you can enjoy the view from all four sides with different charms.

It‘s a really beautiful place, ironic considering all of the ugly things that happened there. It struck me as I was walking in that the columns of trees on either side of me were spread out like angel‘s wings, it‘s an emotional place and you shouldn’t come here if your purely interested in “touristic activities“, it’s a serious place and the history there should be taken very seriously. Go prepared to let your emotions run freely.
