Chobe National Park

Chobe National Park is located in northeastern Botswana, bordering Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, and was established in 1967. The park covers a vast area and encompasses four distinct ecosystems: the Chobe Riverfront, Savuti Marsh, Linyanti Wetlands, and Nogatsaa Salt Pan, each with unique landscapes and animal populations. The Chobe Riverfront is the area of the park where it is easiest to view wildlife at close range. During the dry season, hundreds of African elephants gather by the river to drink and play. Hippos and crocodiles also inhabit the river, and you can observe their activities up close during a boat tour. The Savuti Marsh area forms a sharp contrast to the lush riverfront, with open plains and marshes providing ideal hunting grounds for lion prides, hyenas, leopards, and cheetahs. When zebra migrations pass through this area, the interactions between predators and prey are particularly spectacular. The Nogatsaa Salt Pan area attracts herbivores such as elands, giraffes, and zebras to forage, and it is quieter compared to the riverfront area. The dry season (approx. May–October) is the golden period for wildlife viewing, as vegetation is sparse and animals concentrate around water sources, making them more likely to be spotted.Chobe · 36.9km from downtown

Chobe River

The Chobe River, as a smart and magnificent landscape in southern Africa, carries the majesty and magic of nature. It is the boundary river between Botswana and Namibia, and is also an important tributary of the Zambezi River. It originates from Mount Tambo on the central plateau of Angola, rushing and winding all the way, with a vast basin area. Wherever the river flows, it breeds a rich and colorful ecosystem. Around the Chobe River, lush vegetation covers the land, tall trees block out the sun, and provide habitats for many creatures. There are many kinds of animals here, which are dazzling. Taking a boat tour of the Chobe River is a great way to feel its charm. The yacht moves slowly, the river water ripples, and the scenery on both sides unfolds slowly like a picture scroll. The river is sometimes wide and sometimes narrow, sometimes as open and calm as a lake, and sometimes dotted with river branches, islands, swamps, reeds, and water lilies.Chobe · 61.7km from downtown
Okavango Delta
No. 1 of Best Things to Do in Botswana

Okavango Delta

10 reviews
Okavango Delta is located on the northern edge of the Kalahari Desert. It is a rare inland river delta—the Okavango River originates in the Angolan Highlands, flows for over 1,000 km, and does not empty into any ocean. Instead, it fans out across a flat desert basin, creating a vast labyrinth of waterways, lagoons, and reed beds. The size of the delta changes dramatically with the seasons, with the area varying several-fold between the dry and flood seasons. A notable feature of this delta is the timing of the floods: rainfall from the rainy season in the Angolan Highlands takes several months to reach the delta, peaking during Botswana's dry season (approx. May–August). At this time, while the surrounding desert is parched, the delta is lush with water, and large numbers of animals flock to the water from all directions. Gliding silently through the reed-lined waterways in a traditional canoe is a signature experience during this period, offering close-up views of hippos and elephants foraging in the shallow water. From September–October, as water levels recede and the climate becomes hot and dry, land-based safaris make it easier to track animals; the rainy season from November–April brings migratory birds, making it an excellent time for birdwatching. The delta is home to numerous mammals, including African bush elephants, hippos, lions, cheetahs, African wild dogs, giraffes, and zebras. The red lechwe is an iconic, wetland-adapted species here, often seen running and foraging in shallow water. Hundreds of bird species and dozens of fish species also live here, with Nile crocodiles lurking in the waterways. At night, due to extremely low light pollution, the Milky Way is clearly visible, making it a rare and exceptional spot for stargazing.Botswana · Ngamiland East
Makadikadi Basin

Makadikadi Basin

The Makgadikgadi Salt Pan is a large salt pan in southern Africa, located southeast of the Okavango Delta in northeastern Botswana. It covers a total area of 12,000 square kilometers and has a maximum water depth of 30 meters. It is one of the largest salt pans in the world. The Makgadikgadi Salt Pan is part of the Kalahari Basin. The vast expanse of land here can satisfy your endless imagination. Large areas without human habitation are barren and flat, extending to the milky white blue horizon. The remains of the ancient "Giant Lake" that covered most of northern Botswana still exist, leaving behind large areas of dry land, and salt frost can be seen everywhere. It is mainly a dry marsh bed covered with fresh green grass, which is a very important food source for herbivores such as impalas, zebras, elands and springboks. Many birds are also attracted by the water of the salt marsh, mainly pelicans, flamingos, herons, storks, etc., especially in the rainy season, thousands of flamingos form a beautiful landscape on the vast land.Botswana · Boteti

The combination of tropical savanna and wetlands offers relatively good opportunities to observe elephants up close, and there are also many hippos and antelopes. As for lions and other carnivores, it depends on luck.

Why is the Okavango Desert considered the pinnacle of safari? It's not about the sheer number or rarity of its animals, but rather the breathtaking views of the wetlands and grasslands from the air while cruising in a small plane. Helicopter: $295 per person, minimum two people required. If you're traveling alone, you either need to pay for two people or find a travel companion. Small Plane: $200 per person, single person only. Both flights last 45-60 minutes and depart from Maun Airport. Some people ask why pay for a separate small plane ride when commercial flights to Maun can see the delta from the air. Commercial flights fly at 10,000 meters, offering only an outline, and the windows are often dirty, making for poor photos. Small planes, flying at a few hundred meters, allow you to clearly see the animals on the ground, and they circle the entire area, offering a comprehensive view. It's definitely worth the extra cost.
