Torres del Paine National Park

8.4
4.9/5
23 reviews
The term "Paine" in Torres del Paine National Park originates from the local Tehuelche language and means "blue," named for the park being surrounded by deep blue glacial lakes. The park is famous for its granite peaks that soar into the clouds, numerous glaciers, and lakes of various colors. The park's core views are concentrated around the Paine Massif. Three granite spires known as the Torres del Paine rise straight up, forming a recognizable skyline together with the Cuernos del Paine. Grey Lake and Grey Glacier are spots for viewing icebergs and glacial calving, with blue ice chunks that have broken off from the glacier's edge often floating on the lake surface. French Valley is surrounded by towering rock walls, and from the valley floor, you can look up at the shark-fin-shaped granite ridges. Nordenskjöld Lake features emerald green water that sets off the Cuernos del Paine in the distance. The classic W Trek connects the three major attractions of Grey Glacier, French Valley, and the Torres del Paine, making it a popular multi-day hiking route in the park. The park is located in the transition zone between the Magellanic subpolar forests and the Patagonian steppe, featuring four vegetation zones: steppe, shrubland, forest, and Andean desert. Guanacos are common mammals in the park, and pumas, grey foxes, and the endangered South Andean deer also inhabit the area. As for birds, Andean condors soar between the cliffs, and rheas run across the grasslands.Chile · Torres del Paine

Plaza de Armas de Santiago is the historic heart of Santiago, the capital of Chile, and has served as the city's central square since its founding by Pedro de Valdivia in 1541. The square features a grid layout planned by architect Pedro de Gamboa and is surrounded by several important buildings constructed during the colonial period and the 19th century. On the west side of the square stands the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago, a neoclassical cathedral with exquisite interior decorations. To the north, from west to east, are theCorreosChile Plaza de Armas, the National History Museum (formerly the Royal Court building), and the Santiago City Hall, all of which feature harmonious facades. The Fernández Concha commercial arcade on the south side was built in 1869 and still houses various shops and small restaurants today. In the center of the square is a Carrara marble sculpture titled "Liberty of America," created by Italian sculptor Francesco Orselino, which symbolizes freedom breaking its chains. There are also other commemorative facilities, such as the bronze equestrian statue of Valdivia and a ground marker indicating the city's zero-kilometer point.Chile · Santiago

Easter Island

4.9/5

Easter Island is located in the South Pacific Ocean, locally known as "Rapa Nui". The island is dotted with nearly 1,000 Moai statues. These giant figures, carved from volcanic tuff, are a cultural heritage left by the ancient Rapa Nui people over hundreds of years, and their transportation methods and symbolic meanings remain an unsolved mystery. The statues on the island are concentrated in various locations, with each site offering unique features. A quarry in the east is the main carving site for the Moai statues, where a large number of statues still lie scattered on the volcanic slopes in standing, semi-finished, or half-buried states. Along the coast, rows of statues stand facing inland, their silhouettes particularly stunning at sunrise. On a beach in the north, the statues are accompanied by palm trees, presenting a tropical island landscape. A village site in the southwest bears witness to the "Birdman" cult culture that followed the Moai era—tribes would send people to climb down cliffs and swim to nearby reefs to compete for the first sooty tern egg, with the winner gaining special status for the coming year.Chile · Easter Island

Santa Lucía Hill

28 reviews
Santa Lucía Hill is a conical hill in the center of Santiago, the capital of Chile. It is the remnant of a volcano from millions of years ago and was known in the original local language as "Huelén," meaning "pain and sorrow." This hill is considered the birthplace of Santiago—it was here that Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia announced the founding of the city in 1541. In the 1870s, then-mayor of Santiago, Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna, led the transformation of this rocky hill into an urban garden, introducing fountains, sculptures, staircases, and drought-resistant vegetation. At the entrance at the foot of the hill stands an ornately decorated porch, with large murals on both sides. Winding up the curved stone steps, you will pass a small chapel built in the 1870s and various cacti. The hill is also dotted with sights such as the Neptune Fountain and Hidalgo Castle. The summit features an observation deck, offering a view of the Santiago city area and the distant Andes.Chile · Santiago
Marble Cathedral

Marble Cathedral

7.5
Marble Cathedral is a natural cave formed by thousands of years of lake water erosion onlakeside marble rock layers. The entire area contains multiplemarble rock formations, known respectively as the Marble Cathedral,Marble Chapel, andMarble Caves, among which the Marble Cathedral is named for its silhouette, which resembles a church dome and columns. The rock walls are primarily composed of calcium carbonatemarble. Pure sections appear white, while areas containing impurities display brown and yellow veins. The charm of the colors here comes largely from the interaction between the lake water and the rock walls: glacial particles give the water a turquoise blue-green hue, and light reflected off the water's surface enters the caves, casting a blue glow on the gray-white rock walls. As the seasons change, summer glacial meltwater causes the lake level to rise, submerging some cave entrances. In winter, the water level recedes, exposing more of the rock walls. To visit, you must take a boat from the quiet port in the lakeside town. Small boats slowly enter the main cave, allowing you to admire the intricate textures and the rock walls polished smooth by the water up close. Kayaks can navigate into narrower passages.Chile · Chile Chico

La Moneda Palace

4 reviews
La Moneda Palace is the seat of the Chilean presidency and is located in the heart of Santiago. This neoclassical building was designed by Italian architect Joaquín Toesca and was originally the Royal Mint during the Spanish colonial period, with "Moneda" meaning "currency" in Spanish. The minting function continued for over a century, after which the building gradually transitioned into the seat of government and the presidential office. The building features a white stone facade, and its expansive, horizontal rectangular silhouette conveys a sense of solemnity and stability. The interior of the palace contains about 40 rooms distributed around several inner courtyards. Notable rooms include the Independence Hall with its iconic balcony, the Presidential Gallery displaying busts and portraits of past presidents, and the Blue Room used for receiving foreign heads of state. The square on the north side of the palace is the place to watch the changing of the guard ceremony. This traditional ceremony takes place every other day. The Chilean national police force enters the square in dress uniforms and on horseback, while a military band plays military music and folk songs. The ceremony lasts about half an hour and attracts many tourists and local residents who stop to watch. During the 1973 military coup, the palace was severely damaged by bombing. It was later reopened after extensive restoration, and some bullet marks are still clearly visible today, serving as a silent witness to this period of history.Chile · Santiago

Sotomayor Square is located in the heart of the old port area of Valparaiso, nestled between the mountains and the sea, and is considered the city's representative civic square. It is surrounded by historic buildings: facing the sea is the French Neoclassical-style Chilean Navy Headquarters building, and nearby is the old barracks of the Valparaiso Volunteer Fire Department. Today, it serves as both a public space for local residents' daily activities and an important starting point for tourists to explore the historic district of Valparaiso. It has convenient transportation, and the port, waterfront promenade, and the city's historic streets are all within walking distance.Chile · Valparaiso

The Atacama Desert stretches between the Pacific coast of northern Chile and the Andes, and is one of the most arid non-polar deserts on Earth. Some areas have seen almost no significant precipitation for years, and the dryness has instead left behind desert scenery rarely seen elsewhere. Its natural landscape is highly diverse. The Valley of the Moon is famous for its unique rock formations, salt-crusted surfaces, and lunar-like terrain; the Atacama Salt Flat features salt crusts, lagoons, and diverse wildlife; and high-altitude areas offer sights of volcanoes, geysers, and colorful highland lakes. Parts of this region have dry air, minimal cloud cover, and clear night skies, making it a globally important area for astronomical observation, with several large-scale astronomical facilities built here.Chile · Antofagasta

44 reviews
Ahu Tongariki is located on the east coast of Easter Island, about 1 km from the Rano Raraku quarry, the birthplace of the moai statues, and is one of the most prominent ahu platforms on the island. 15 moai are lined up on the long stone platform, facing inland with their backs to the sea, and framed against the green slopes and the ocean, creating the iconic image of Easter Island for many people. It is not only an important site for studying the history, religious beliefs, and stone carving art of the Rapa Nui people, but also a popular destination for visitors to learn about the civilization of Easter Island. In the early morning, the sun rises from behind the statues, and the light reflecting between the silhouettes of the statues and the coastal landscape creates a highly recognizable view. It blends ancient civilization ruins with the magnificent marine environment, showcasing the unique historical charm of Easter Island.Chile · Easter Island

Must visit. Did a day trip from El Calafate to Torres del Paine. Felt like we stepped into a painting with a filter. I didn't realise such colours could exist naturally. Would visit again but complete a trek.

Standing among the colonial buildings of the Plaza de Armas, dyed honey by the setting sun, I vaguely heard the echoes of history. The chiming of the church's bronze bells startled a flock of pigeons as I stroked the polished stone carvings framing the central fountain—said to have been a resting place for countless travelers over three centuries. An elderly Indian in a striped poncho sat on a bench weaving colorful ropes. At his feet, a small mound of colored salt formed in an aluminum box, while a young man wearing headphones skated by him. The changing of the guards at the presidential palace, their heels tapping out a rhythmic beat, couldn't drown out the melody of "The Dove" played by an accordionist in the corner. I pulled a coin with Bolivar's face from my pocket and suddenly felt that this square resembled it: engraved with the solemnity of the colonial era on one side, and the heat of everyday life on the other.

The best view of the Andes Mountains. I climbed up instead of taking the cable car. The distance is not far, but the ground seems to be under repair. I fell and it was not worth it. In addition to enjoying the scenery on the top of the mountain, remember to try the local classic cold drink mote. It looks like a cold drink with pudding and beans, and it tastes good. It is said that the local Chileans will also have a cup at the top of the mountain. I took the cable car down the mountain. It was 3400, about 4 US dollars, which is not expensive. It is still a must-see attraction.

This place is so magical. I had a chance to travel here because the ship I am working on had been here. It was a great opportunity since not a lot of people can go here since it’s very remote in the Pacific Ocean. The locals did a great job in maintaining the untouched beauty of the place
