Praça Sete de Setembro
In the city center of Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais, Brazil, there is an iconic public space, the Seventh of September Square. It can be called the "heart" of the city, carrying profound historical and cultural connotations, and is a very popular square among locals. Located at the intersection of Avenida Afonso Pena and Avenida Amazonas, the square is the starting point for the city's “kilometer zero”. In the center of the square stands a striking monument: the Obelisk. The obelisk was given to the residents of Belo Horizonte in 1922 by the people of the neighboring city of Betim to celebrate the centenary of Brazil's independence. The obelisk is made of granite and is affectionately called "the little lollipop" by local residents. It is a pointed column with a height of 7 meters, a square base and a column at each corner as decoration. It was designed by architect Antonio Rego and built by engineer Antonio Gonçalves Gravata. Praca do Papa
Praca do Papa is located in Belo Horizonte and is affectionately known as the "Pope's Square" due to the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1980. The square is located in the Mangabeiras district, about 1,100 meters above sea level, next to the Curral Mountains, and provides an opportunity to overlook Belo Horizonte. There is a striking building in the square, the "Peace Monument" (Monumento à Paz), designed by artist Ricardo Carvão. It is about 24 meters high and consists of three steel plates, symbolizing faith, holiness and blessing. A cross stands next to it, symbolizing the Christian faith.
