San Francisco (San Franciscan) Church, built in 1361, is the oldest church in Italy and was listed as a World Heritage Site in 2000. The cathedral has a delicate structure, consisting of upper and lower churches, built on one side of the hill, including the upper and lower churches, and the tomb where the remains of San Francisco are placed, as well as the attached monastery. The upper and lower chapels are decorated with frescoes by many painters of the late medieval Roman and Tuscan schools, where Giotto, Cimabue and other Italian artists of the time created their works, and began to move from the mannerisms of Byzantine art. The range and quality of the work, which led to the transformation of the Renaissance into the naturalistic style, made this sanctuary an important witness to the development of Italian art during this period.Assisi · 1.2km from downtown
