Zaanse Schans, a small fairy tale in Zaanse Schans, Netherlands
Zaanse Schans, a small fairy tale in Zaanse Schans, Netherlands
🏖️Atmosphere/Facilities:
Zaanse Schans Car Village retains traditional windmill architecture and integrates a Dutch wooden shoe workshop and a cheese factory. In the wooden shoe workshop, local professional masters explain the shoemaking process, and there are many exquisite souvenirs to choose from. The cheese factory has a wide variety of cheeses that you can try. The service staff are friendly and the queuing process is fast. There are many small packages of cheese that you can buy back and give to your relatives and friends. It is very easy to visit and you can experience the traditional Dutch culture in one day. Essence.
The scenery of the farmhouse and the riverside is pleasant. There are also cute mini sheep that gather together and are very cute. You can get close and take photos if you are not afraid of animals. When you are tired of shopping, there is a coffee shop selling Dutch waffles and hot coffee. You will not be bored even if you stay there for an afternoon. A very cozy little fairy tale village.
💞Recommended reasons:
Along with Kinderdijk on the outskirts of Rotterdam, Zaanse Schans is one of the two major windmill attractions in the Netherlands. It is actually more suitable for tourists who are coming to experience the local folk culture of the Netherlands for the first time.
📍Address/Transportation:
It takes 20 minutes to take a Sprinter from Amsterdam Central Station to Zaanse Schans Train Station. No need to change trains, it costs about €3.5 – 4.5. It is also very simple to walk to the sightseeing area after getting off the bus.

Outstanding Greek Restaurant 'Irodion'
Irodion is located in the heart of Zaandam, near Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and it is an excellent Greek restaurant with great food at reasonable prices. The staff are very helpful and friendly.
We visited around 9 pm that day, and since the surrounding area of Zaandam is quite quiet, most restaurants were already closed. We were fortunate to find that Irodion was still open. As soon as we sat down, the waiter brought us two shots of strong liquor to taste, and after ordering, he told us that the salad before the meal could be refilled indefinitely!
We ordered several dishes and they were all delicious, very satisfying! If there is a chance, we will definitely visit again!

🇳🇱 Truly a real Dutch experience 🚴🏼♂️
Zaanse Schans offers the picturesque countryside views and most beautiful windmill landscape, It's a unique part of the Netherlands. We stayed at b&b homestay nearby, as it’s only about a 10 minutes cycling to the village. The village full of wooden houses, windmills, barns and workshops, and the water sight are definitely worth visiting.
The windmills are the main attractions here, there are about 10 windmills, half of which are fully functional and can be visited (for an entrance fee). Several historic buildings were added in recent years. The clog workshop is part of museum, part demonstration, part souvenir store, like many of the shops, clogs were made by hand by a craftsman.
I loved the chance to soak up the history, explore the windmills, and learn about the Zaan district. It is one of the most popular destination in the Netherlands and located quite near to the city, very convenient assess with public transport.

Getting There - by train from Amsterdam
Attractions - windmills, old town charm
Food & Restaurants - various
Shopping - souvenirs
Zaanse Schans is famous for their windmills and the area is like a mini open air museums. It is also easily accessible by train from Amsterdam as a day trip.
One can spend a few hours exploring the neighborhood and small town charm.
One memorable experience is discovering the toll bridge for the ships, basically the bridge will open up to let the ships go past. As we were busy taking photos of the rainbow at the bridge (first photo), we did not realize the toll bridge was going to open up by splitting. Luckily, some kind locals warned us in time.
We saw a lot of farm animals like sheep, goats and even a cute cat whilst exploring the area.
It is nice to spend some time away from the city and explore this place with its own history.

Visit Zaanse Schans
Those who wish they could travel back in time and visit the Netherlands of the 17th and 18th centuries have come to the right place.
Zaanse Schans is located around 15 kilometers to the north of Amsterdam and is styled as an open-air museum where you can take a stroll around a traditional Dutch village and find out how ancient craftsmen would have worked.
Just some of the sights include a shipyard, a grocery store, a pewter factory, and a range of dainty green wooden houses.
You will also find some graceful windmills although out of the 600 that would have dotted the area in the days of old, only 5 now remain and can be visited by the public.
These include an iconic saw mill as well as an oil mill and you will find fun live demonstrations like a clog making session.

Zaanse Schans
The windmills of Zaanse Schans are one of the most famous places to see these historical windmills in The Netherlands. Follow a day trip or take the sightseeing bus to reach these beautiful windmills. They are housed in a wonderful little site so it is easy to get around, there are also food options around and a shoe making factory. The nearby museum has a shop too if you like to get some souvenirs. It can get rainy so bring along an umbrella or raincoat.
One of the places I definitely will try to go back to again.

The Netherlands is known as the country of windmills. This is because most of the land in the Netherlands is a low-lying land. In ancient times, it was often necessary to fight against floods, so windmills were widely used as equipment for drainage and milling. Zaanse Schans, the famous windmill village in the Netherlands, is also the closest one to the Dutch first Amsterdam, about 15 km away, and can be reached by train from the central railway station.
This is an old and beautiful village, next to the banks of the Zanhe River, a variety of windmills and colorful small houses, together form a quiet and beautiful European country style, full of small bridges, flowing water, people's rustic The country style is like being in the water town of Jiangnan, but the houses here are more charming, and the pastoral scene in the fairy tale world. Although the windmill village in the off-season is cold and bleak, there are very few tourists, which is extraordinarily quiet and peaceful.
