Yuncheng Salt Lake, Shanxi
#chinatrip
Yuncheng Salt Lake, often called China’s "Dead Sea," offers a unique visual experience with its changing colors. The lake’s mineral content produces hues ranging from pink to green and white during summer. It’s a haven for photographers and a fascinating site for those interested in natural phenomena and historical salt production.
Huh? No photos allowed in Yongle Palace? Yuncheng Museum has you covered.
📍Address:
Weifeng Street, Yanhu District, Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province. The square in front of the museum is huge, and if you're lucky, you might catch a special exhibition. We saw an exhibition on ancient architecture in Shanxi on the square, and it gave us a lot of ideas for future trips.
🚗Getting there:
We stayed at a nearby hotel and walked to the museum. There are lots of places to eat, drink, and have fun nearby, and there's a big shopping mall next door, so we recommend adding this to your city walk itinerary.
👍️Must-see:
1. The museum has a large wall with a replica of the Yongle Palace murals, and you can take photos of it. The replica is aged, so it makes up for not being able to take photos in Yongle Palace.
2. There are also murals from Qinglong Temple here. Qinglong Temple is rarely open, and the murals inside are under constant restoration, so you can hardly ever see them. It's lucky to be able to see them in the museum. The damaged parts are left blank, which is very realistic and true to the original.
💗Other tips:
The museum also has many models and introductions of ancient architecture in Shanxi, which are worth taking your time to see. If you're interested in comparisons, you can find many great places here that you won't find in regular guides.

Chongning Hall is the main hall of the Guandi Ancestral Temple, named after Guan Yu was conferred the title of "Chongning Zhenjun." Picture 1 shows the statue of Guan Yu in Chongning Hall. Picture 2 shows the bronze furnace in front of Chongning Hall. Picture 3 shows the Green Dragon Crescent Blade on both sides in front of the hall. Chongning Hall is surrounded by 24 dragon columns, and picture 4 shows the only column with a turtle carved on it behind the hall.
Behind Chongning Hall are Suqi Qianqiu Archway and Spring and Autumn Tower (picture 5). Suqi Qianqiu Archway is said to have been built by Empress Dowager Cixi, hence the saying "Phoenix above the Dragon" (picture 15).
Spring and Autumn Tower (picture 6) was originally named "Lin Jing Pavilion" and was named after the statue of Guan Yu reading the Spring and Autumn Annals. Spring and Autumn Tower has three wonders: the first is "Hanging Beams and Columns" (picture 8); the other two wonders are on the second floor, which requires an additional ticket (30 per person). The second wonder is the life-size statue of Guan Yu reading the Spring and Autumn Annals (picture 12), and the third wonder is the unique chrysanthemum caisson in China (pictures 9 and 10). In addition, the central caisson on the second floor (picture 14) and the full text of the Spring and Autumn Annals carved on the wooden wall of the warm pavilion can also be called a wonder.
On the left and right sides in front of Spring and Autumn Tower are the Knife Pavilion and Seal Pavilion (picture 16).
There are three groups of six "Hu People Leading Lions" bronze statues in Jiezhou Guandi Temple (picture 17), which are very interesting.

Yuncheng Salt Lake: Uncovering The Chinese Dead Sea Secrets
#traveldiaries
Yuncheng Yanchi is located in the south of Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province, at the northern foot of Zhongtiao Mountain.Yanchi is bordered by Qiligang and Shishiligang in Yuncheng City to the north, Zhongtiao Mountain to the south, Anyi to the east, and Jiezhou to the west. The salt pond is 20 to 35 kilometers long from east to west and 3 to 5 kilometers wide from north to south. It is surrounded by high ground and a low-lying shape in the middle. The total area is about 130 square kilometers. The surface of the pond is 320 meters above sea level and the water depth is 0.22 meters. It is a natural inland salt lake.
Yuncheng Salt Pond is rich in resources. In addition to salt and Glauber's salt, there are also magnesium sulfate, calcium sulfate, potassium, bromine, boron and other rare elements. The history of Yanchi can be traced back to the early spring and autumn, when the pond salt in Hedong was already very famous.During the Two Han Dynasties, salt officials were set up in Anyi County to manage salt industry affairs. The output of Hedong Salt Pond in the Song Dynasty reached 82.5 million catties.By the mid-1980s, the salt pond had an annual output of 30,000 tons of raw salt, and the annual chemical production capacity was 37,000 tons of alkali sulfide and 280,000 tons of anhydrous glauber's salt.
Because its salt content is similar to the “Dead Sea” in the Middle East, people can float without sinking in the water, so it is known as the “Dead Sea of China”. Yuncheng Salt Lake Scenic Area is located in the central area of Salt Lake Lake. It is a national 4A-level scenic area, integrating humanities, ecology, greenness and health.Relying on the unique salt lake resources, the scenic area has developed tourism projects such as “floating in the dead sea, black mud health, hot spring hydrotherapy, mineral salt physiotherapy, and salt spray to clear the lungs”.
The formation of Yuncheng Salt Pond can be traced back to the period of the tectonic movement of the Himalayas in the Cenozoic Era, and it has a history of about 50 million years.Due to the large-scale subsidence of the ground to the north of Zhongtiao Mountain, the original prototype of Yuncheng Basin and salt pond was formed. After long-term precipitation and evaporation, a natural salt lake has been formed.
Yuncheng Yanchi's unique geographical location and rich natural resources make it the largest lake in Shanxi Province, which has a profound impact on local economic development and cultural inheritance. From the legendary battle between the Yanhuang Alliance and Chi You in the “Zhuolu" near Yanchi, to the many legends of Yao, Shun, and Yu in the southern Jin Region, to the development and prosperity of the Xia, Shang, and San Dynasties in Hedong, Heluo, and Guanzhong regions, they are all within hundreds of miles of Hedong Yanchi.
Exploring YunCheng Secrets

Yuncheng is an important area for the activities of the Huangdi, Yandi, and Chi You, the ancestors of the Chinese nation, as well as Yao, Shun, and Yu. Chinese civilization is slowly unfolding here.
Yuncheng City is rich in cultural heritage. As of April 2024, there are 28 national intangible cultural heritage projects and 153 provincial-level projects. There are 6,205 immovable cultural relics of various types, including 102 national-level protected cultural relics, which ranks first among prefecture-level cities in the country and is known as the “No. 1 National Treasure City”.
There are national AAAA-level tourist attractions such as Houtu Temple, Wulaofeng, and Yuncheng Salt Lake in Yuncheng City, as well as famous attractions such as Jiezhou Guandi Temple, Stork Bird Tower, and Yongle Palace, which have attracted a large number of tourists to visit.
Yuncheng City has a complex geological structure, with three types of terrain: mountains, hills, and plains. The climate belongs to a warm temperate continental monsoon climate. There is Lake Wu Surnamed, the largest freshwater lake in Shanxi, in Yuncheng, and the river belongs to the Yellow River Basin.
Yuncheng City is located in the heart of the “Golden Triangle” of the Yellow River in Jin, Shaanxi, Henan and Henan. It inherits the east and the west, runs through the north and south, and radiates the Central Plains. It is the combination of North China, Northwest China, and the Central Plains of China, and it is also an important node for the country to implement the “Belt and Road” initiative.
In summary, Yuncheng City is a city with a long history, deep cultural heritage, rapid economic development and rich tourism resources. It is worth a visit.

The Ancestor of 30,000 Guan Temples | The Black Myth: Wukong is really good at choosing locations.
Jiezhou Guandi Temple, which has been in existence for more than 1,400 years, is the earliest, largest, highest-ranking, and best-preserved Guandi Temple.
🌟Highlights:
1️⃣Four Dragon Wall
It is a glazed shadow wall made during the Xuande period of the Ming Dynasty, located south of the main gate of the Guandi Ancestral Temple. The picture is divided into three realms from top to bottom: heaven, earth, and sea. The main body is four dragons flying and swimming, lined with phoenixes, unicorns, jade rabbits and other auspicious birds and beasts, giving this four-dragon wall a lot of traditional cultural connotations.
2️⃣Chrysanthemum Caisson
The architectural style of Chunqiu Building is unique and the structure is ingenious. Its biggest feature is its cantilever column structure, which gives people the feeling of a pavilion in the air. It is the only example of this construction form in ancient Chinese architecture. The "Chrysanthemum Caisson" with two eyes upside down is extremely exquisite. This kind of caisson structure is extremely rare in the country, showing the wisdom and skills of ancient architects.
3️⃣Three Gates: Duanmen, Zhi Gate, Wumen
The architectural layout of Jiezhou Guandi Temple is the traditional "front court and back bedroom" and symmetrical palace layout in China. On the central axis, there are Duanmen, Zhi Gate, Wumen, Yushu Building, Chongning Hall, and Chunqiu Building in order. There are wooden squares, stone squares, stele pavilions, bell pavilions and east and west corridors on both sides. The towering buildings are lined with towering pines and cypresses, which are quite royal.
4️⃣Four plaques:
The temple is hung with Kangxi's imperial pen "Yi Bing Qian Kun", Qianlong's imperial "Shen Yong", Xianfeng's imperial book "Wan Shi Ren Ji", and Cixi's own book "Wei Ling Zhen Die".
5️⃣Iron Lion
The lion of Jiezhou Guandi Temple is proud and majestic; the iron man is a foreigner with a high nose and deep eyes, who is a foreigner who feeds lions, and is a fine casting of the Ming Dynasty. It not only has high value for studying the casting technology of the Ming Dynasty, but also provides important physical evidence for studying ancient costumes.

Slow Travel in Small Towns | How many "world's first" are hidden in Yuncheng?
Follow Wukong to explore every corner of Shanxi. Although these small towns may not seem impressive, they are home to many top-notch ancient buildings. For example, the Feiyun Tower, the world's first wooden building, the Fusheng Temple, the world's first Guanyin statue, and the Shuanglin Temple, the world's first cool Weituo. Of course, there are also the following!
👉 World's First Guandi Temple: Guandi Temple in Jiezhou Town
How can you miss the landmark Guandi Temple when you come to Guan Gong's hometown? The core landscape of the entire Yuncheng Guan Gong Hometown Cultural Tourism Scenic Area is this stunning Guandi Temple.
With the halo of the ancestor of the Guan Temple, it is no wonder that it has become the Guandi Temple of Nanbo Wan, which has been loved by emperors of all ages and has a high density of imperial plaques!
In addition to being good-looking, good shopping, and good shooting, the cultural and creative here is also very good, and the whole set of Guan Lao Ye moved home.
👉 World's First Dragon King Sacrificial Temple: Guangren Wang Temple in Ruicheng County
The Guangren Wang Temple looks completely ordinary, with a single hall and a stage echoing each other, surrounded by various modern-style derivative architectural exhibitions and displays.
But it is currently the oldest Dragon King sacrificial ancient building, with a very complete Tang Dynasty wooden architectural system. This simple ancient temple built by the people may not satisfy the desire for curiosity, and you can't see the golden splendor and ingenious workmanship, but here is like an open-air museum about Chinese architectural history, and the Guangren Wang Temple is definitely the treasure of the town!
Salt and Yuncheng | Hedong Salt Pool Museum
Yuncheng has a close relationship with salt. The history of salt production can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. During the Han Dynasty, the government implemented the salt and iron monopoly, and Yuncheng became one of the important salt production bases in the country. In the Tang Dynasty, Yuncheng Salt Pool was one of the important sources of fiscal and taxation, accounting for about 1/4 of the national salt revenue and 1/8 of the national fiscal revenue, which was a pillar industry of finance.
In Xu Shen's "Shuowen Jiezi" in the Eastern Han Dynasty, "Gu" Hedong Salt Pool also reflects the importance of Yuncheng's salt industry. Yuncheng's characteristic snack street "Gu Street" is named after this word.
The museum is themed with salt, with some simple introductions to ancient salt production, as well as some cultural relics related to salt and the components of the pool temple. The scale is not very large. If you are interested in the salt category, you can come and visit, and the popular science is okay.
The museum sells tickets separately for 20 yuan, and there are package tickets for the pool temple + museum + city wall for 39.9 yuan. The tour time is about 1-2 hours. There are pool temples around, and you can visit the Zhongjin Gate.
Yuncheng | Temple Oddities, Chi Shen Temple.
I've been to Yuncheng several times before, and this trip was mainly to visit some of the attractions I missed, and to revisit some of the popular ancient buildings. First, I went to the Chi Shen Temple in the city center, which is now a national key cultural relics protection unit.
The Chi Shen Temple was first built in the 12th year of the Tang Dynasty's Dali calendar to commemorate the god who bestowed salt. The Chi Shen has been given many titles throughout the dynasties, and the main buildings that exist today are from the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty. It is also an important historical landmark of Yuncheng's salt industry.
The main buildings of the temple are the three main halls: Lingqing Gong Shen Temple (Chi Shen), Rain Master Sun God Temple (Sun God), and Tiaoshan Wind Cave God Temple (Wind God). The statues in the halls are modern, and the temple is a unique sacrificial temple with distinctive regional characteristics. It is the only one of its kind in China and is known as a unique temple in China.
Another highlight is the distant view of the salt lake, which is separated from the salt lake by a road. The location is relatively high, so it's a good place to take photos.
Scenic spot tickets: 30 yuan, there is a combined ticket for Chi Shen Temple + Museum + City Wall for 39.9 yuan. If you can stay in Yuncheng for a few days, it is recommended to buy an annual pass (128 yuan, can be bought by non-locals).
Located on the edge of the salt pool in the city center, you can choose to take a bus/taxi/shared bicycle, etc. At night, the Zhongjinmen area is quite nice to stroll around.
